Lazy Disney Animators of the 70s

HistNerd says...

I miss the hand drawn cartoons as well. However, I just watched The Incredibles tonight, which I loved. Then I watched the, "Behind the Making" featurette. I'm way impressed with the stuff those computer animators do. They said that, although a computer is really technical and amazing, yadda yadda yadda, it's still a person who is manipulating that program, which takes a lot of talent. Anyway, cool stuff!

What the Bleep Do We Know?! (pseudo-science documentary)

benjee says...

This is a 'science' documentary created by Ramtha School of Enlightenment (a cult-like movement). It's a bizarre film mixing real science with un-proven mystical experiments, through the story of a really annoying deaf woman (hence the comedy). From the Google Video:

The topics discussed in What the Bleep Do We Know!? include neurology, quantum physics, psychology, epistemology, ontology, metaphysics, magical thinking and spirituality. The film features interviews with individuals presented as experts in science and spirituality, interspersed with the story of a deaf photographer as she struggles with her situation. Computer-animated graphics feature heavily in the film. The film has received widespread criticism from the scientific community. Physicists, in particular, claim that the film grossly misrepresents the meaning of various principles of quantum mechanics, and is in fact pseudoscience.

The comments of those presented as scientific experts converge on a single theme: "We all create our own reality." This is not a widely held view of physics by the scientific community, but it correlates well with subjective experience.

Molecular level simulation of DNA wrapping

amxcvbcv says...

It's showing a computer animated representation of chromatin (DNA) condensing in order for a cell to replicate. At the beginning of the process we see a simple double-strand of DNA. The little critters that attach to it are called histones. The DNA coils around these and then the histones link together to further coil the DNA. After that the details get fuzzy for me, I had medical biochem and genetics last year.

Interestingly, if you were to stretch out the DNA molecule in a human cell into one continuous strand it would be about 3 meters long, depending on whose research you look at.

Amazing.

If you add up all the DNA in all the cells in the size of an average human you could go from the earth to the sun almost 70 times!

Reboot Season One intro

Ogre says...

Reboot has dated computer animation yes, but it was the stories, comedy and characters what made it so awesome to me. Season 3 was a masterpiece I think and I wish they would release this show on DVD. I'd but it for sure.
