Star Wars NO!

As I started watching I was thinking that since there were six three films there'd be enough dialogue to do this with any common word, but that really did seem like a lot by the end.

Team suspended for using N-word chant

GenjiKilpatrick says...

Nigger is not a common word.. but a race?! and our culture?!?!?! o_O?!

wtF?!

Words are words. The emotions they evoke are only hurtful if you let them be. i.e. mentally removing that taboo

That said, it's good that she spoke up about it. And it's even better she'll be returning to the team.

Atheist Experience ep. 702 - Ray Comfort Interview!

there is a huge difference between mis spelling something and using a word in a way that at ods with how the vast majorty of people percive it ( especaily when you are using it differently for the sake of suporting an argument)

If you spell a word wrong the Meaning is still intact and its allso transpartent to everyone that you have spelt a word wrong. If you use one word ( fairly common words) to mean something else then you litraly cannot converse at all.

so no its not anal especaily when the other person as i say is usiong words wrong on purpouse. It is anal if sumone acidently uses the wrong word and then that is identified and the people that happen to know the more common meaning rub it in or pick on them for it. or if sumone uses a wrong word ocasionaly ( but its not pivital to the argument and it was clear they just ment a different word that sounded simular )

As i say the piont hear is that ray is specifcaly interpreting the word Science , and faith compleaty wrong allowing him to maintain his cognagtive dissonance.

I find the tension and conflict of this video interesting, but I don't think there is any justification for making the old guy a hero or internet celebrity. He clearly has issues and seemed to be just as interested in violence as his counterpart.
I think peggedbea is right, that interjecting race into the title and tags is creepy, and issykitty makes a good point as to how appealing this has become to the racists of youtube. It doesn't mean that everyone who voted for this is a raging, lynching klansman, but it may be indicative of the subtler prejudices that all of us harbor deep inside our subconscious. Either way, it's worthy of discussion.
If this hot, viral video were framed as two crazy idiots fighting on a bus, I wouldn't see much problem with it, but that's not how it's been framed. Instead, it's young black thug vs. elderly white marine. Or even worse Ignorant, illiterate black gangbanger vs bearded Nordic God.
In America, intercity blacks are feared. They are portrayed in the media as either criminal thugs or lazy bums who live off of government aid. The only positives you ever hear are about the occasional football or basketball player who gets a scholarship and escapes. Black neighborhoods are avoided by white people, who describe these places with words like 'scary' 'sketchy' or 'rough', but if you actually take the time to explore these areas, you find regular people. People who work. People who love their children. People who mow their lawns. As a white person, I've felt no overt prejudice against me in these places. I've felt no danger or threat upon my personal safety. It's just not the warzone it's made out to be in the media.
For some, this video will not only confirm false media stereotypes, but also goes the extra mile to punish that stereotype with violence. Don't get me wrong, the black guy in this video seems like a creep, and goes to great lengths to live up to the most negative of negative black stereotypes, right down to his inability to pronounce a very common word, but for many, this one single man's behavior will serve as a confirmation and justification for irrational, subconscious racial fears.
I'm not judging nomino, or anyone. I voted this thing up, myself, before bea and issy gave me some pause, so I'm not claiming to be better or wiser than anyone else here. Race is a really tough subject for Americans, complicated by history, tradition, media, politics and economics. I think it's OK to find this conflict on a bus compelling, and to also admit that there might be more going on in our subconscious minds than we'd like. dark fear
Since I'm in the confessional, I might as well mention that I wish I could take my vote back from another video, featuring a European man slapping a woman, causing her to cry. Lots of subconscious shit going on there too.

I agree both the guys would have been wiser to defuse the situation. It's an expensive risk to absorb that anyone you meet like that might be carrying a knife or a gun. The stakes in life are high, and all it takes is one bout of bad luck...

I can understand it sucks for the younger guy... he can't complain since he certainly carries some amount over 50% of the responsibility for what happened, but his brain made him think it was a good idea, and now he just feels more victimized by life than he did before he got the tables turned on him.

"He clearly has issues and seemed to be just as interested in violence as his counterpart."

I think it's certainly a good instinct to be understanding of both sides... it's a higher human impulse... but it seems like this can also go so far as creating a false symmetry. The younger guy (1) did force the older guy to the other side of the bus, (2) did then go after him and throw the first punch, and (3) did legally commit assault (touching someone who doesn't want to be touched, particularly while threatening violence). For all the old guy knew, the next punch could have had a knife with it.

Yeah, it's good to not excessively vilify high crime areas... but I feel like some of this goes so far as to imply that statistics are irrational. On another note, this video would be just as appealing to many people if it featured an Aussie thug (a small minority of Aussies) and an Indian-Australian.

That being said, I think you're right... it'd be better to not inject race into the title, and most people who live in statistically risky areas are good people, same as everywhere.

something like a personal tag cloud of the most common words in tags and titles that you upvoted, updated each time you upvote.

then the ability to sort videos by "personal preference" would be possible, pushing similar videos to the top of your personal page.

i am not sure of the server load implications though.

How Muslims Are Treated In The USA

Farhad2000 says...

You really seem to not know about the intricate nature of the issues you raise about muslim intergration within Europe. Furthermore picking a few anti-Islamic, anti-Immigration, pro-conservative websites doesn't give the issue fair light.

This BBC News report shows the issue in better light. Also this MSNBC interactive site, the common words being mentioned is poverty, alienation, discrimination and integration problems.

The issue isn't so much religion in Europe it's social reactionism against immigration, using the Islamic religion as a scape goat to increase anti-immigration sentiment. Tell me the last time someone put the issue in favourble light in the last 7 years post 9/11 and the whole radical Islam scare, before 9/11 we could look at terrorism as simply that but now we couple it with the Islamic faith.

Islam being a religion of war? Please. If Islam was a religion of war you'd be screwed then because you know its the single largest religious denomination now in the world? But for some reason all these ideas only exist in your fantasies.

Am sick and tired of this hypocrisy with regards to claiming Islam a religion of war, you connect anything a Muslim person does to his religion, I bet if a Muslim kills an American tomorrow it won't be that one person killed another but will be reported as "Muslim Slays American".

Think of it this way from the same perspective "Christian President Declares War on Islamic Nations of Afghanistan and Iraq". There we go again. Its the myth of clash of civilizations. Go back to 1999, no one gave a shit about Islam, now post 9/11 and the media drive everyone has become a buck shot specialist on the 'threat' of Islam.

Switching to Dvorak (Blog Entry by arvana)

arvana says...

There is a part of me thinking WHY did I do this to myself?!? I too have over 20 years of experience with QWERTY, and am lightning fast and almost error-free at it. But I expect to be even faster on Dvorak fairly quickly.

One of the things that convinced me to switch was an an article by a guy who said that it only took him two weeks to get back up to speed. My experience seems to be bearing that out -- I'm only five days in and I'm fully touch-typing, if slowly.

Part of the reason it's quick to switch is that you already have the movements down. You don't have to relearn how to move your fingers, how to type spaces or how to shift. And the number keys (and their shifted characters) are in the same places -- which for me took the longest to learn.

And there are real benefits. I can already feel how much less my fingers need to move around. If that translates to a 20% increase in my typing speed, it will give me a big boost in productivity. It is also supposed to reduce the risk of carpal tunnel and RSI.

I'm also finding unexpected pleasures. The hyphen is within easy reach, instead of being way off in a corner. The comma, period and quote are easier as well. And some common words that were awkward before are now a delight -- I will never again type 'teh' instead of 'the'. Except when it comes to "teh cuteness", of course!

As far as portability goes, it's a snap to switch any modern operating system to Dvorak, so I'm not worried about it. Some say you can retain the ability to type in both; that remains to be seen in my case.

The first thing I did to switch over was to pop off all my keycaps. Then I discovered that my ergonomic keyboard has non-interchangeable keys, so I put them back and just wrote the letters in with permanent marker. Which promptly rubbed off. But that's ok, it's all about the touch-typing.

Thylan is right about the keyboard shortcuts. That definitely adds another layer to the learning curve. But while some are less convenient, others are more, so it probably balances out in the end.

As to whether I would recommend it to anyone else, I'll let you know in a week!

VideoSift Channels? (Sift Talk Post)

Since the search tool searches the titles too, could the tag cloud display the common words (excluding the usual commonly excluded common terms)? Then you could select videos from subdomains that auto-execute the search terms. Could we also view the bottom of the tag cloud so we can find "rare" items?
