VideoSift v6 (VS6) Beta Front Page (Sift Talk Post)

I don't deal well with change. =)

In all seriousness, I do miss the single column. The new format feels like I'm looking at too much at the same time. That's just how I see, I also don't like change. =)

One of the first things I do whenever I set up a clean install of Windows is to set the default view for every folder to "details".

A single column of content allows me to cycle the content through my stationary point of focus. I can stare at a fixed spot and just let my free-scroll mouse wheel do the work. Which is simply great for quickly browsing for interesting content.

Multiple columns of content, however, force me to scan by constantly changing my point of focus. The new design does precisely that, it makes me devote much more time to every single entry unless I reduce the tab's width to intentionally force the layout to organise its content in a single column.

But it's the same issue for almost every news site out there, so I guess I'm just too old for this shit. /rant

Connie Britton's Hair Secret. It's not just for Women!

bareboards2 says...

@gorillaman

What do you think "feminism" is?

It is the idea that women are people. Period.

Getting women the vote and making them full participating citizens is a profoundly "feminist" action.

Well, you can believe what you want to believe. Since men have been angry about women wanting to be treated equally for a very long time, I'll have to put you into the column of Super Victim yourself.

So you think I wrap myself in the cloak of "victim." I don't see that you are doing anything different.

So weird to me. This isn't rocket science. And yet here we are, decades later, still having to talk about this.

It fucking tiring.

So I'm done here. If you wish to lay down a long, complicated, intellectually dense diatribe about how I am wrong, go for it.

It has nothing to do with me and everything to do with who you are.

The Office of the Prosecutor General just notified the public that it has closed the investigation into Netzpolitik.org: neither were the published documents state secrets, nor did the journalists involved in this matter show any intent to harm the country.

Just like basically every non-hardliner said the moment this was made public. Pure intimidation, and possibly, if not probably, a pretty shady way to get legal permission to employ digital surveillance against those involved.

Edit: Guardian, NYT

Corbyn was referenced in quite a few articles by Monbiot, Jones and Milne over at the Guardian, but that's about all I read about him. Never really looked into his positions.

However, Frankie dropped this line about him in his column yesterday:

"I honestly don’t think that Corbyn would make a good leader but only because he would quickly take his own life in a highly unconvincing manner on a long country walk, an inquiry taking 15 years to report that he had kicked himself to death."

That sparked my interest. The comment section provided this gem:

"Corbyn is measured, articulate, doesn't take crap from interviewers, and doesn't look morally constipated through having consumed a surfeit of focus group tripe, unlike the other three."

Again, interesting.

Then you brought him up, and Jacobin runs a piece on him. So I suppose I'll be taking a look at him now.

Have you seen anything about the rise of Jeremy Corbyn (a long standing Labour party backbench rebel) in the UK party leadership election?

Actually, my friend, 'tis you who is overthinking it now.

Recap of our convo:

You: I don't think she's funny.

Me: Wondering if this comedy is directed at you.

You: Nah, I don't think she is funny.

Me: I hear you. Let me tell you why I find her funny.

You: Nah, you're wrong, I don't think she is funny.

Your last response "should" have been -- Huh. So that is why you think she is funny. I still don't find her funny. Or maybe -- Huh. I don't want to think about it. Don't bother me with your opinion.

No need to bring up what anyone else said in this comment stream. I'm not them.

It's all good. You don't think she is funny and you aren't interested in knowing why someone else might.

As for "overthinking", many many column inches have been written by relatively serious people over why Amy Schumer is so wildly popular. Oddly enough, none of those articles mention you personally.

That last line? That was a joke. But you don't have to think it is funny. It makes me laugh though.

TLDR: You are absolutely entitled to your opinion. You aren't entitled to belittle me and what interests me, not without getting some blowback from me.

Um, you’re still overthinking it. I don’t think comedy and jokes are worth dissecting, like we’re at some seminar with Powerpoint slides showing intersecting circles and flowcharts and phylogenetic trees showing comedy lineage, trying to extract the "why".

I don’t think men are “threatened” by her comedy (as someone here wrote) any more than I’m threatened by seeing a video of Miley Cyrus shouting “eat my pu**y” into the mic and then gyrating against a blow up doll. I’m sure somebody out there must find that very shocking and sexy.

Didn’t mean to hit Pause on the laugh track, I just don’t find her funny for no other reason than she doesn't make me laugh. To each his own.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Official Teaser #2

Old guy has his opponent EXACTLY where he wants him...

SFOGuy says...

Rules actually seem straight forward.
---Pieces start on the home rows and advance one square at a time.
---Single enemy pieces can be jumped, but two or more together cannot; jumps have to land on an empty space on the other side
---If jump can be taken, it must be taken; jumps can be serial, taking one piece after another...
---One a piece reaches the opponent's home row (either by jumping or moving one space at a time), it's "kinged" and its jumps and movement can be sort of like a rook's---from any one point over an enemy piece to any space on the same column or row.

So the whole trick here is that he gets the other guy to take his pieces---but in dead end gambits---the "takes" don't lead anywhere.

And then, with his one, lone little piece---and the field wide open (meaning lots of one piece jumps)---he moves in for the kill.,

Porn Actress Mercedes Carrera LOSES IT With Modern Feminists

dannym3141 says...

I think the lady makes a very good point about damage being done to sex relations, and often times it seems the internet-generation feminist is actually not interested whatsoever in equality and is more accurately described a misandrist.

Very recently in my own country we had a number of famous feminists fighting to get rid of "page 3 girls" - semi nude models in tabloid newspapers. It never happened, but even as it was happening there were page 3 models complaining because it meant they'd be out of a job they enjoyed and got paid well for. No woman OR man should feel forced to take their clothes off in public for any reason, and in fact that is the case as these people are not slaves but career models by choice. What was actually happening was a prudish approach to human sexuality had been disguised as an equality thing; and the language was always of course referring to the little girls - because if you disagree with little girls having to grow up to go topless you're a certified monster and pervert.

That kind of shit really detracts from the things that are seriously unfair such as, most obviously, the pay gap. No woman should get paid less for the same job. There's no "rape culture" that i've ever heard of if your sample size includes greater than 1000 people in the west, and terms like that detract from the argument again - if you want to talk rape culture then look to India, where there is (and needs to be more) attention on changing the attitudes of the male community towards females because of horrific acts taking place.. almost commonplace. And to India's credit there was a big campaign tied into their favourite sport, with social media involvement and obviously most men proudly wearing symbols and stuff. There are parts of that society that has issues that could do with feminism.

But this is the profession of being offended. You have to drum up publicity, it has to be viral, or you don't get paid. You don't get a column in the newspaper or the mag, you don't get enough hits on your youtube to make enough money. Not if you talk about the pay gap or the gender inequality in less "civilised?" societies.. no, you do that by talking about the tits on page 3. Or espousing something unfair and incendiary; something someone will want to argue with. Nothing that fits with common sense. These people are self publicists - they will make a spelling error on a tweet to encourage others to call them stupid, correct them, essentially RETWEET AND REPLY AND FOLLOW AND LIKE!

Whether or not Sarkeesian(?) should have commented, there is a point well made in this video. I've been on the receiving end of something disguised as feminism in the past, and all it did was make me wary of anyone under 30 that calls themselves a feminist. Before i can establish whether that means misandrist, i have to establish common ground, because i'm a feminist too. What we need is more decorum and less extremism. You can't change the world without the help of both sexes, why alienate each other?

RFC: VS6 Sidebar Suggestions (Sift Talk Post)

Shepppard says...

The way it's designed seems like it's intended for use on cell phones and tablets, and not really a computer.

The entire page is streamlined in a single column where you have the video information / comments / permalinks all in the same area with no differentiation.

The way you have it now where everything is noticeably different based on colours has completely fallen by the wayside, and everything is just kinda lumped in together on the same crummy grey(dark mode) background.

The permalinks section needs to be off to the side more, and maybe put in with a different colour? Otherwise it just seems like you've slapped everything on a page. May not hurt to put them as smaller and off to the side aswell.

Liftoff for NASA's Orion Spaceship

Zawash says...

It's viewed at a very long range, through fog and clouds. The perspective is because of the very long range, and the image is very dimmed because of the cloud cover.
The image is underexposed, and therefore we can only clearly see the very brightest part of the image, which is the flames inside the thrusters - that part is hidden in severely overexposed flare blooms in all the other recordings. The rest of the rocket is barely seen through the clouds, and would have been a bit more visible if the image had a lighter exposure, but then the nozzles would have been bright blooms, and we wouldn't have been able to see any details inside.
If you look closely, you faintly see not only the spaceship, but also the huge flickering flame columns behind the nozzles.

Jeremy Scahill: media has failed to cover massacre in Gaza

LarryASingleton says...

99.9% of the knuckleheads commenting here negatively about Israel have never read, let alone heard of, books like Andrew Bostom's Legacy of Jihad and Legacy of Islamic Antisemitism. Or From Time Immemorial by Joan Peters. Or a book I just started, A Lethal Obsession by Robert Wistrich. Thing is I'm one of these "hope springs eternal" guys because I keep thinking people are like me who was once about as close to being a card carrying member of the KKK as you can be without actually being one. Until I read some books like Malcolm X. Black Like Me and others. While I was in Jr. High getting jumped by black kids trying to punch and stomp my guts out. The useful idiots limit this "conflict" to simply Muslims against Jews yet its a lot more profound than that:

Supplemental Article “The First and Last Enemy: Jew Hatred in Islam.” by Bostom (Frontpage Magazine archive)
http://archive.frontpagemag.com/readArticle.aspx?ARTID=28549

People just refuse to acknowledge the Jew-Hatred that is part of a Muslims DNA. Don't believe what those Interfaith frauds tell you. "Moderate" or not; if you don't hate Jews you're not a true Muslim. If you don't believe that please explain the hatred that is like a disease in Gaza. And if you have half a brain you know it's been there LONG before Israel won its Independence.
