Honest Government Advert - Visit Puerto Rico

MilkmanDan says...

I think that until relatively recently, there was a pretty even 3-way split amongst Puerto Ricans to:
A) Stay a commonwealth / territory
B) Go independent
C) Become a US State

But recently (likely thanks to shit like the video is describing), "stay the same" support has been dropping dramatically.

From the US population in general, I think poll results (on the rare occasions the question gets asked) tend to remain a pretty even 3-way split.

I think the 3-way division of options wasn't doing them any favors for a long time; status quo remained because none of the 3 options could get a majority. So I guess here's hoping that their situation will improve now that they seem to have largely cast aside that 3rd choice.

(I should note that I am by no means an expert or even particularly clued in on this topic. I've been to PR twice, and loved it. My "info" comes largely from a High School report I did on the topic like ~20 years ago, and a continuing genuine interest that has motivated me to keep vaguely informed *read - I wikipedia it once every few years. But although I may be way off or out of date on my info in the post above, my hope that their situation improves to their satisfaction is sincere.)

Tapper: This is the Definition of Fake News

newtboy says...

Taping foreign diplomats is, unfortunately, the norm these days (and for decades or longer), and anyone with 1/4 of a brain would know (keeping in mind that Carnivore came to light decades ago, and Snowden clued us in to far worse surveillance of ordinary people daily) that calls to and from Russian diplomats would be recorded, and the fact that he was 1. surprised his team's conversations with numerous Russian agents were recorded, 2. didn't understand that when you call someone who's obviously going to be under surveillance you will also be recorded, so you shouldn't lie about it, and 3. jumped directly to making a specific unsupported and outrageous accusation directly against Obama that could not be true as he described it shows, at best, a criminal level of naivete and a tenuous grasp on reality or, more likely, a sociopathic penchant for lying to distract from his self serving illicit actions. (Wow, nice run on sentence, huh?)

I won't address the sad state of news, but it is impossible to deal in fact without contradicting Trump's daily 3am rants complaining about things he clearly doesn't understand, so "anti-Trump" is really pro-fact, something even faux can't completely ignore, try as they might.

Trump might not be completely right but he is not completely wrong. Fisa request did go out. To spy directly or indirectly on Trump and his staff I'm not sure yet.

But to bring a CNN clip as factual is anything but. CNN is king of FAKE news.

To be sure all programing
ABC, CBS,NBC, CNN, MSNBC, Late night shows ) is set to anti Trump programing 24/7 except for FOX .. They are only 1/3 anti Trump programing.

The Rotary Engine is Dead - Here's Why.

MilkmanDan says...

Thanks for that, makes me feel better about getting them confused since the terminology is semi-fluid.

Seeing the disassembled Wankel engine in the video should have clued me in that that was NOT what was used in the P-47, which had lots of big cylinders for pistons radiating around a central point, hence the "radial" designation.

It (the video) was very helpful for figuring out how the chambers and path of the parts work in comparison to a piston engine, which is quite interesting even for someone like me who really only understands the rudiments of either design. Live and learn!

vil said:

Two different types of engine are both called "rotary" and both have been used on airplanes to confuse people.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotary_engine

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pistonless_rotary_engine

Also a rotary engine (most WWI warplanes) can look fairly similar to a radial (some WWII warplanes) unless its running.

The principle of the wankel engine is not dead. At this time other principles have been developed better but it can come back with better materials and design.

It would be awesome if there was a way to bring back real old style rotary engines, I love visible moving parts, very steampunk.

@ChaosEngine

Do you honestly believe that we can't oppose things like institutional rape without reference to this single recent ideology? This is equivalent with the idea that humanity only learned theft and murder were wrong when Moses turned up waving the ten commandments at the israelites. It's lucky God clued us in when he did or we'd all still be unabashedly robbing and killing each other today.

Feminists might use the definition you mentioned, when it suits them. Of course they do; they're the popular faction: ideologues always want to fold all notions of moral goodness into their particular cult. Catholicism was the same way when they were the only game in town.

You yourself don't even use that definition, you can't because no one can. Look at the first couple of comments you made on this video. It's impossible to read them as dealing with a basic concept rather than what feminism actually is, which is a complex modern movement that certainly postdates the suffragettes.

If feminism is strictly the concept of equality for women, then feminism has been around FOREVER and until in historical terms about five minutes ago, according to you, 'didn't have any noticeable effect'.

Kinda cool miniature shock absorber demo rig

SFOGuy says...

Thank you! Can't read German, so---in retrospect, the part about the "Stossdamfer" and "intakt" might have clued me...
lol

oritteropo said:

On the front of the box it reads "Sind Ihre Stossdämpfer intakt?" (Are your shock absorbers intact?), and the brand on the bottom is Sachs (German auto parts manufacturer, they make dampers, shock absorbers etc.).

This is a rather cute demonstrator showing the effect of the difference between new and worn shock absorbers using RC car parts. I couldn't quite make out the written list of attributes for their defective vs perfect Stossdämpfer, but you can see for yourself

It's another shame that his "evidence" is also complete supposition that a stay in a rehab (for illicit drug use) months earlier somehow equates to inappropriate hard core anti depressant usage without supervision.
I'll just hope for random patients sake that's not his own experience as a 'clinical psychologist' that he's speaking from. (Oh, my wife, an ex-pharmacist, just clued me into the fact that psychologists can't prescribe medicines, is it therefore likely his apparent anti-anti-depressant position is just an extension of jealousy of those who can?)
(Somehow I feel he doesn't tell his patients about Videosift, I think he might lose some if they read his posts and put 2 and 2 together).

ChaosEngine said:

Shame your "evidence" comes from a website that is a front for a law firm to sue pharmaceutical companies.

The reality is that the link between antidepressants and suicide is complex and not fully understood yet. For a start, antidepressants (by their very nature) are prescribed to people who have an increased risk, thus skewing the results. While there may be a link, there's also a serious issue of people who go off their meds having an increased risk.

So it's certainly not as black and white as you paint it.

The Newsroom - Why Will is a Republican

Stormsinger says...

I do see a fair number of echo-chamber addicts, RFlagg. But the crazier and more extreme the GOP gets, the less they appeal to the other 70% of the voters. This is the self-destruction I'm referring to. 30% of the vote won't get them very far, they'll be the newest equivalent of the Green party, i.e. unable to win any election of value.

I'd like to see a Warren/Franken ticket, in whatever order of precedence. Franken certainly seems clued in enough to capture the non-Luddite crowd's interest.

But yeah, the Democrats definitely have to avoid that defeat problem they historically have had. I'm not sure they can do it...more likely they'll balkanize and start bicker themselves into losing.

NSA Has Found Ways To Beat The Encryption...

rebuilder says...

None of the news I've seen on this make it clear just what is going on. Is SSL/TLS compromised? Have the NSA simply gotten access to the servers of major corporations storing people's data? Is this simply about weaknesses in closed crypto implementations people trust?

IOW, which common encryptions can the NSA break, and is that because they have found ways to access the information before or after encryption, because they have found ways to get the encryption keys/seeds, because they've found flaws in specific implementations of some algorithms (which ones?), or because they've found flaws in basic assumptions of some algorithms (again, which ones?)

The more clued-up articles I've read make it sound more likely this is about the NSA having a wide array of coercive tools and backdoors at their disposal, not so much that they can decrypt, say, SSL on the fly at will.

Irreversible: Rape scene (disturbing)

nancynew121 says...

Seeing as how the majority of people in the world and apparently those select few who have commented in this feed are not clued in. An act of rape is not about sex. It is not about your significant other or wife giving it up to you. If someone wanted to have sex they could just go to a prostitute. Rape is about control. In this setting itself its portrayed in a disgusting manner. He dominates her in every sense and leaves her empty, with nothing. She might as well be dead in the emotional state in which she is in. I know that people come up here to make light of situations like these because you are bored and just want to start shit. Most people liked to get comments back and argue essentially about nothing because you are seriously pathetic and YOLO as in you obviously live online. Given the current statistics, one day either you or someone you care about or know will get raped and when you see the emptiness that has taken over them and replaces them as whole, crack a joke then. I take this personally because during my current medical rotations i see this every damn day in the trauma department. I unfortunately get to see the aftermath of such a gruesome event in which some of you think is "hot."

MOST ENTERTAINING COMMERCIAL I'VE EVER FUCKING SEEN

MilkmanDan says...

Yeah, from the title I thought it was a "real"* commercial. Call me stupid or whatever, but in any case thanks to @NaMeCaF for cluing me and anyone else as dim as me in.

*depending on how you define "real commercial". After/while watching I jumped to the conclusion that it wasn't a TV spot (time too long for one thing), and probably wasn't authorized/developed by the top Toyota brass. In my defense, I've seen plenty of viral 'commercials' (clip is in both those channels by the way) that are "real" in that they are officially or at least semi-officially created by the company that makes the product/service they are selling/showing, AND that are over the top/out there/"offensive" in the same sort of way this clip is.

Funny thing is, if the title or description was upfront about it being from a sketch comedy show as NaMeCaF revealed (instead of calling it a commercial in the tags, channels, and title), I would have appreciated the humor and upvoted it on my first viewing. As it is, I think I'll upvote his comments that clued me in instead.

Must have been a shallow one

Imagine an 8+ sized.

No thanks ... been in a couple nearing 7.0 that's enough for me =o(

Which ones and where? The biggest and closest was near L.A. of 6.1 IIRC. As a callow, I just left my ant nest with my queen ant and was walking to my school bus pickup spot. I didn't feel it at first until my queen told me to stop and things were shaking. I saw windows were shaking/vibrating and stuff. Scary! My first (earth)quake ever in my life!

A 6.5 and a 6.8 ... both in Seattle. My first experience occurred as I was walking through a park on my way to grade school one spring morning. It struck me as odd that there were no birds to be seen [or heard]. A few minutes later I was standing on the playfield, waiting for school to begin, when I noticed a series of rolling waves in the asphalt heading toward me. Then came a deafening rumble as I watched chimney's collapse off several houses across the street. Two story high windows behind me were bowing in and out as the cleaners fell off the scaffolding. I was barely able to keep my footing. Our school was the only one in the neighborhood that remained open that day. It had been rebuilt after it had been destroyed in a 7.1 shaker back in 1949 [before my time]. Scary stuff indeed!

Wow, I remember seeing/hearing the big quake in Seattle a few years ago. Are/Were you still up there and felt that one?

More than a few years ... I think you are referring to the 6.8 on feb 28, 2001. I was asleep ... it jolted awake. Two of my neighbors lost their chimney's in that one. No damage to my house, just some pictures tilted and the contents of one display shelf were thrown across the room. I shoulda clued in that something was up when my cat wouldn't come in to sleep with me [which was highly unusual]. He ended up running to the basement and would not come out from behind the furnace for three days =o(

Louis C.K. is Sorry for Everything

Trancecoach says...

This may be the secret to his comedy inasmuch as he is clued into the primary condition of modern humans -- essentially "sorry" for being unable to fulfill the role, cue, and identity that has been provided to him.
