Democrats engage in sit-in in Congress over gun control

Happy Birthday Bill Maher

Lawdeedaw says...

Why doesn't Obama like Maher...hrm, could it be the self-righteousness of an asshole? I mean he is funny often, and I don't mind the left fighting back against the right's propaganda machine, but to often do it with the same weapons (stupidity, judgmental opinions, a religious zeal and childishness) it makes you no better than Fox and Friends.

Just my opinion on Maher's little whinny discourse here. If there was a petition for Obama to remain classy and stay away, I would sign that one

Santa Ana Cops Behaving Badly

Mordhaus says...

"Did you punch that one-legged old Benita?" one officer says.

"I was about to kick her in her ****ing nub," another officer replies.

Marla James volunteers at the Sky High Collective. She's legally blind and says several medical issues keep her confined to a wheelchair.

"How can I respect someone like that? It just makes your stomach turn -- maybe she doesn't know what it's like to have an amputation. I don't know what was going through her head, but man that was so disrespectful," James said.

She now plans to sue the city for the actions of the female officer in the video.

Protect and serve, protect and serve. Classy people, one and all. Don't you just feel so warm and protected after seeing our law enforcement mistreating handicapped people, eating pot brownies, and trying to destroy evidence?

Some interesting arrow science.

Hadn't considered the fist bump as a potential health measure.

During greeting processes I've fist bumped a billionaire (he shook his head after, with a smile), refrained from physical contact (sick) and have been told "i killed your family" (many times by a friend, joke deliberately focused on inappropriate things to say), in all cases i knew the person well.

I think the difference in appropriateness is how well you know the individual, and what they're tolerant of. A first bump as a first meeting is a bit off imo as no bond has been built and best left to a generic handshake.
These guys however, had obviously met multiple times, so not a bad idea to freshen things up with some alternatives. Seems the older fella was too quick for this to be their first fist bump.

Also i agree fist bumping is not professional, it's casual.. with or with out a classy explosion.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s secretary of state, had this to say about the referendum in Ireland: "I think that you cannot just talk of a defeat for Christian principles, but of a defeat for humanity."

Stay classy, Vatican!

Is the Sift outdated? (User Poll by GenjiKilpatrick)

schmawy says...

The Sift is like a real nice old neighborhood bar. The kind of bar you hope never closes. It's quiet, friendly, and classy in a slightly retro way. Maybe you moved out of town a couple of years ago, and you just happen to be driving through and exclaim "Ooh shit, that place is still open!? I gotta go in!"

the Elizabeth warren speech that has everyone talking

newtboy says...

Contrary to what they would have you believe, this is NOT an academic group of scholars, but is actually a right wing political organization that has a home at George Mason University (but is not affiliated with or supported by Mason) dedicated to showing how a 'free market economy can solve any problem'.

From their web page: As the name implies, Mercatus (market in Latin) research focuses on how markets solve problems.

EDIT: Nice, I like the downvote for shining a light on your source with information from their own website. Keeping it classy!

Warren is a "Champion" against Corporatism, and yet she supports the Ex-Im Bank that gives $8.3 billion to Boeing and $2.6 billion to GE (Mercatus Scholars on the Export-Import Bank). Because, y'know.. logic and consistency. "The people's" support of Warren is support of all for all of those entities that make her employment as a politician possible. In other words, "the people's" support of Warren (regardless of her rhetoric or polemical attempts at persuading a disenfranchised Left) is, in fact, support for all of those entities which make her career as a politician possible (i.e., the very corporatist relationships she rails against, while simultaneously supporting with favorable legislation). Despite all the rhetoric, make no mistake that Warren knows exactly where her bread gets buttered.

(While this is fairly basic stuff for most if not all of politics-as-usual, it's just so deliciously blatant with someone like Warren that it's too satisfying to resist pointing out.)

Toronto Maple Leaf Fans Sing Star Spangled Banner

Fairbs says...

Part may be that that league has 30 Teams of which 23 are American so they get to hear the American anthem quite a bit. Very classy as always Canada. I know the tune of the Canadian anthem, but not all of the words (and it gets even harder when they throw in the verse in French). I like their anthem close to as much as I like ours.

Wait- those were the Canadians singing?

Why would those people know the US national anthem, just from watching US sports?

Funny.

10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman

bmacs27 says...

I did watch the video. I didn't hear any threats. Hyperbole gets you nowhere.

There were the two persistent guys. Although I think that had more to do with her acting. They were doing the equivalent of fucking with buckingham palace guards. It was obvious she was doing the silent shtick far beyond what's reasonable. In a real situation that would be diffused with two words, "fuck off."

We describe good etiquette as "classy." Why do you suppose that is?

IMO we should all be forced to acknowledge the riffraff here and there.

ChaosEngine said:

Just because something isn't illegal doesn't mean the target of whatever unpleasant activity isn't a "victim". You can be the "victim" of a prank.

And this is more than an inconvenience. Did you actually watch the video? While you could make an argument that some of the comments are relatively innocuous, there are plenty that are downright creepy, and a few even vaguely threatening.

And drop the "poor people" schtick. Being poor is not an excuse to be an asshole. Neither is being rich.

Again, it's about context. I say crass things to my female friends all the time, because I know them. That's fine. Hell, I don't even have a problem with someone getting abused (verbally) at a comedy gig. It's appropriate.
