How to See Underwater Without Goggles

Porksandwich says...

Some places use way too much chlorine in their water, and you get your eyes seared by that a couple times and you decide it's just easier to wear goggles.

I need vision correction so much now that without it, goggles or not I am not going to be able to tell what's happening anyway besides blurry shapes being closer or further away.

How to See Underwater Without Goggles

I used to be able to open my eyes under water no problems, but after doing it for months my eyes just got fed up with the chlorine I guess and that was it, I couldn't do it anymore, and required goggles from then on.

Wild Swimming -- introducing "natural" swimming pools

Wild Swimming -- introducing "natural" swimming pools

MilkmanDan says...

I have outdoor koi ponds, and I'm into the fish-keeping hobby with aquariums also. With the right ecological setup and filtration/circulation system, I think this would make a great visual element / water garden area for a home, plus providing a swimming area that is cleaner and clearer than your average pond/lake.

If you're squeamish about swimming in a lake or pond, consider that your average public pool is saturated with chlorine/bromine and kid-piss... Pick your poison.

55 Watts of light without electricity from plastic bottle

Great, now develop a "cyalume" version that actually stores the sunlight to be used at night.

Gee, is cyalume not as common as water, chlorine, and 2L pop bottles? Yeah thanks for pointing that out genius. <- sarcasm here.
As a kid we used to have rechargable glow sticks. I'm pretty sure if you could come up with a recipe for making that shit at home or at least from commonly available chemicals like bleach, then you'd have something even more valuable. Please no snide comments "informing" me of the logistical realities.

^ There are fragments of truth in those articles weaved together into a completely incorrect and paranoid narrative. Here's one of the articles you linked:

Paranoid ranting along the lines of "Oh noes! Table salt contains poisonous Chlorine and Sodium!". The "sources" don't reinforce the narrative of the article, at all.
You have to be a conspiracy theorist to believe these things. Why would medical researchers conspire in this manner? So that they can sell cheap vaccines instead of very expensive medicine to treat disease outbreaks?

Conspire in what manner? Researchers don't sell vaccines. The article says nothing about a conspiracy.

There is no narrative either.

Why waste your time arguing with conspiracy theorists? You should be doing something about your failure at reading comprehension.

BTW "fragments of truth" and "completely incorrect" are contradictory statements.

Oops! Thanks for the heads up, man.

As for yer blind kid -- you're supposed to wait a day or two before you swim in a freshly chlorinated pool. I'm sure it's only temporary. Hey, but look at the bright side: if he is permanently blind you won't need to worry about him ever becoming addicted to internet porn.

And you put to much chlorine in last time. Now my kid's blind.

Fluorine bound into Fluoxetine is a lot different than fluorine bound into fluoride. You can eat all the salt you want but eating elemental chlorine and elemental sodium would kill you and light you on fire. Groaningly bad that he would equate drinking fluoride to being the same as eating Fluoxetine.

Yea, people seem to think of chemistry like cooking, where a molecule is just a loose collection of ingredients.

When people talk about the health risks of "fluoride" they're usually talking about Sodium Fluoride, which is an ionic compound and splits into Na+ and F- when dissolved in water (the negatively charged fluorine ion is called "fluoride").
Excessive amounts of fluoride (well above what is generally in tap water) can lead to severe health problems. Perhaps lower amounts cause problems too, but the evidence is less clear.
Prozac contains three covalently bonded fluorine atoms which do not split off when being metabolized. Prozac has it's own health impacts, but not because it produces fluoride ions.

Sorry for leaving you in an excited state... I understand it raises the potential for sudden discharge. ;-)
