Girl swallowed by pavement in China

The fact that a comment critiquing rape culture gets downvoted, and one that promotes rape culture gets up voted, reveals a heavy nerdbro tendency on this site that is really quite sick.
No, I dont care if it is 'just a joke'. You infantile nethipsters that make these comments never have to worry about being raped, never have to worry about what they wear walking down the street and if it will promote 'catcalls'. You don't have to worry about facing violence by going out at night or, if you do get sexually assaulted, have to worry about who will even believe you.
Plainly, you have no idea what you are talking about.
That is why it is funny to you. Because you are that removed from reality. Your laughter is a privileged laughter. Your cynicism is anti-human.

You wouldn't be saying that 30 mins after I put some Rohypnol in your drink.

I didn't downvote your comment because you critiqued rape culture. I downvoted your comment because I found it rude. I thought Hybrid's joke was funny and certainly was not thinking it being rape related.

Obviously you disagree. I see your point, and I am sorry you have been hurt bad enough to lash out like this. But there are better ways to disagree than calling him a loser and saying he was talking about raping women.

Maybe I am priviledged, maybe I have lived a sheltered life and I know am lucky. It does not make me a bad person. If you think I am ignorant, there are better, nicer ways to educate me, and my 'anti-human' kind.

I upvoted your comment because it was so passionately yet eloquently stated. But you might want to have a look at this vid for a different take on things (from the 6:00 mark to the end is particularly relevant).
I completely understand where you're coming from--as someone whose close friend was the victim of rape, I am always appalled when playing online games and teen-something kids joke about "raping" their opponents or "getting raped" in the game, seemingly trivializing the act. I eventually realized they were so carefree about the use of the term precisely for the reasons you stated in your post.
Even though I'm still disgusted by it, I eventually got some perspective and realized it was highly unlikely any of them would condone an actual rape in real life. They weren't promoting a culture of rape--they were using hyperbole for comedic effect. I don't find it funny, but it seems rather authoritarian of me to insist that others not find it funny either (again, watch the end of that vid I linked to above).

Great comment. I hear that a lot when gaming but for me it's like the use of the word "gay" to mean something lame. Anyway see that episode of South Park for more details

Just wanted you to know you aren't alone in not liking some of the "male" humor around here.

I don't think it is a good thing -- but I have gotten numb to it. It is a good coping mechanism. And especially when it becomes clear there is nothing you can do or say that will make a difference. So why bother.

And. I remember feeling pretty much a lone voice calling out into the wilderness, and how crappy that felt.

So. You aren't alone.

The opening is pretty brutally dense -- but I think reading the whole parable is worthwhile (from my comment on the stream):

I recommend starting with this sentence, partway down:

A man has the privilege of walking past a group of strange women without worrying about being catcalled, or leered at, or having sexual suggestions tossed at him.

There follows a parable that I found pretty dang compelling.

Just reading that sentence is kind of a tl,dr summary. The parable fleshes it out.

@StimulusMax -yes I can. And I didn't read that article. Is there a tl;dr version?

Bow wow, dear deathcow, bow wow.

That makes sense if you read the link of @Angua1. It's really great, once you get past the opening -- if you decide to explore it, I recommend starting with this sentence, partway down:

A man has the privilege of walking past a group of strange women without worrying about being catcalled, or leered at, or having sexual suggestions tossed at him.

There follows a parable that I found pretty dang compelling. And pretty funny, given that you live in Alaska and it "stars" a Husky dog.

And yes, I agree with you about biological "imperatives" -- study after study have proven that men are visual animals. To argue with that is profoundly idiotic, indeed jousting at windmills. I don't think that is the point though. I think all this is being asked for is an "Oh. I didn't think about it that way. Huh."

Female Australian Politician Gets Meowed At for Assertivness

Lawdeedaw says...

Do tell. I am open to actually changing my points of view (I have done so since I was born on things like race, sexual orientation and such) but I must know reason.

In the cut throat world, I simply bring up "don't complain in the big boy/girl ring." If you do, then stay out of the ring.

Is the catcall right, mature, a positive? Of course not. It is fucking childish. But neither is half the shit thrown at Obama, or Bill Clinton or John McCain. Obama was basically accused of trying to teach really underage children sex. That, I would assume, is worse than a catcall.

Again, is it wrong of them to do so? Of course--and yet people are face palming this statement just because I attach the fact that politicans are scum, and expect this behavior, and stop complainig... I want to hear why.

Wait? So because Wong can't handle the big girl world of politics we make a fuss about this??? Booho,o he was sexist. And? That's real world when people get off the playground. You fight dirty, you use all the tools to crush the weak---it's probably how Wong got to where she got in politics. Dirty shit...
God forbid she live in Africa (Where women are raped and mutilated every day) or combat (Where their limits are tested) or even women's baseball (Where she could be hit by a ball...)

For shame.

Why? See the comment above to understand why I said what I said. If you still stand up for someone who sensationalizes in politics, then go for it. Also, if you can tell me that the male lawmaker isn't scum to everyone (Men and women) then that makes him sexist. Otherwise, it just makes him a "politician."

Clinton supporters protest at Rules and Bylaws Committee

NetRunner says...

>> ^Constitutional_Patriot:
McCain... Obama.... Clinton... it's all CFR to me baby.
btw - don't you find it disgusting to see how half of the democratic supporters have pledged to vote for a NeoCon instead of one of their own if they don't get another Clinton in office? Are we living in bizzaro world or what?

To the second point first, it's not half the democratic party -- it's just who showed up to "support" Clinton at the RBC, by protesting it, catcalling during it, chanting, jeering, even hissing at the mention of Obama's name. The way these people representing the Clinton campaign comported themselves was purely shameful.

To his credit, Obama made sure to tell his supporters to be respectful, not to jeer, boo, chant, etc, but simply applaud the arguments made in their favor, without being too over the top. They more or less did that.

As for bizzaro world, you started your post by painting all three with the same brush because they're members of a think-tank on international relations?

Everyone's got their axe to grind in elections, I have several that I'm deadly serious about -- restoration of the Constitution (stop torture, restore checks and balances, stop domestic spying without oversight), economic policy that benefits people who don't own their own billion-dollar company, and ending this failed nation-building exercise in Iraq are just my top three.

Two candidates promise that, one promises anything but that. I don't believe Clinton's promises, but I believe Obama. I don't expect him to fix it all overnight, but I expect him to try.

CFR membership doesn't really register for me as an issue, especially since CFR has some good ideas with regard to Iran. I kinda wish Bush listened to CFR, might've tempered his petulant foreign policy into something reasonable.

Being beautiful given the local standards... (Blog Entry by oxdottir)

raven says...

If I may toss in some perspective...

As I already mentioned on Persephone's post regarding this issue, I am not what I would consider 'stunning' or 'gorgeous' (those who love me might say that, but whatever, lets be honest here), but I'm decent looking, and probably, as oxdottir said, "pretty by local standards", I'm thin (a rare commodity these days), my skin is decent, my teeth are straight (thanks to 4 years in braces), and over the years I've figured out how to present myself well (wasn't always this way, in fact, I spent all of adolescence as a kind of a dorky, spindly legged little tomboy who was often covered in dirt with her hair all mussed up, never considered pretty or girlish, so this whole 'being attractive' thing, still strikes me as kind of odd)... so, it could be said that I can go either way, because a lot of it is all based on how much effort I choose to put forth and this has led me to believe that much of what is perceived of as 'beauty' is actually just window dressing... hair, makeup, attitude. The days I choose to not care and just wear my glasses and pull my hair back I can walk down a street and no one will notice me, I could be invisible for all the reaction I get. Next day, I bother with contacts instead of glasses, wear my hair down and find something more flattering to wear, and I get all kinds of looks and even catcalls (depending on the area and number of people)... its weird like that, and as a result, more often then not, I don't bother getting all cleaned up like that, because frankly, I'm a bit shy and prefer to be left alone, I don't always need that ego boost, and as I mentioned on Persephone's thread, dangerous situations can and have arisen as a result.

So, having the perspective of both sides (to some extent) I agree and sympathize with a number of the problems you've outlined, pretty girls are not considered smart, nor taken seriously (usually I manage to shatter this preconception quickly, but still it is there), male professors are sometimes seemingly nervous about being associated with or working with a female student if she is attractive looking (lest rumors circulate), it is hard having female friends (I think I have maybe 3), harder still to be 'one of the guys' because there is always a chance that guys have only befriended me in the hopes that they will get in my pants someday (I too have frequently used the tactic of making sure I always appeared 'taken' or 'involved' with someone in order to insure that a friendship did not wander into that uncomfortable zone where I would have to turn a dear friend down should he try to make a move just because I'm suddenly available- it sucks, but I really hate hurting someone's feelings), and even harder still to get a guy to talk to you, especially one worth talking too as usually only the shallow player types are bold enough to just break the ice, but even that is not good as basically that type of guy will fuck anything that moves (and who wants that anyway?)... and also, when one is considered the prettiest of the lot, its hard to find someone interested in a more than superficial relationship, as many guys go for the attractive girl because they want some sort of trophy, kind of like, "hey, lookee here at my woman, she's a hottie, behold my awesomeness!"... a situation I avoid like the plague because there is always the possibility that someday your boyfriend/husband will decide he needs to upgrade his arm candy and then you're out the door. So fuck that, no thanks.

Also, a lot of what Farhad said about the pretty girls using their looks to get something, or somehow feeling entitled to all kinds of stuff, can also be applied to guys as well, as I've known a good many men who behave this way. They are considered hot and they know it and in a lot of them that brings out the worst behaviors (can't even count how many of these types over the years have tried to get me to do their homework for them or 'help' them with their term papers)... this is ultimately, I suppose, why I am rarely attracted to the 'attractive' type guys, they are too much trouble, and I've found, rarely interesting once you talk to them. I prefer conversation and intelligence any day, because ultimately, if a relationship is to work long term, those things are much more important than if your mate is considered a '10'.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I appreciate the way I look, but I understand both sides of it pretty well and there are pitfalls either way.

Andy Card receives honorary diploma

LeadingZero says...

RE: Two minutes of hate...

That crossed my mind too. It was pretty uncomfortable.
Though, many feel that Andrew Card played an instrumental role in selling a war to the U.S. public based on fabricated premises with horrific and hateful consequences a great deal more significant than two minutes of booing and catcalls.

The students of University of Massachusetts Amherst who protested Andrew Card receiving an honorary degree were expressing their displeasure after their initial organized attempts to persuade the university to abandon the decision fell on deaf ears. They were well within their rights of free speech and protest is not always comfortable.
