The Ingenious Way South Korea Unclogs Toilets

Gregorioft says...

I've seen people doing that in Brazil many years ago. Difference is that they use cardboard, flush the toilet and stand on top of it. It's a messy business. Shit everywhere. But it works.

Al Sharpton Versus The Teleprompter

Yogi says...

What's interesting about Al Sharpton is rarely have I seen anyone come under such scrutiny throughout their entire life. All their choices places under a microscope as they navigate the already perilous political landscape of Activism. The wild speculation and misinterpretation would be enough to crush most men.

His life is what I could see happening to Martin Luther King Jr. if he lived. MLK was about to make a speech and start a campaign against specifically poverty and inequality before he died. It was going to be his next project and one that had a lot of support among blacks and the lower class. It was already starting to happen that mainstream state supporting media was turning against him. It's the idea of "Ok we agreed with you on this but now you've been radicalized." The idea that radicalization is when you try and do something we can't possibly support, like fair wages or money out of politics.

Not trying to say that MLK and Al Sharpton are equals, but if MLK had lived I'm certain that his Wikipedia page would be, along with Sharptons, an essay on every misspoken word, every misguided action. Everything placed under a microscope which not even the most pious and dedicated man could escape. It would be a farce, and that's how you destroy an opponent, any opponent. This is why our politicians are all pieces of cardboard that suck.

Love the cardboard box arrangement.

I remember in college when we had to put together a computer from chips, a friend's group went way above and beyond the required specs, so the college wanted to keep it.They problem is they'd mounted it in a used pizza box that happened to be lying around when they needed a case. Very classy, but it added a lovely extra touch of geek.

@RedSky

The fry argument always bugs the hell outta me. There was another of these "mold studies" done by the same guy who did the super-size me doc.

He picked up one of basically every burger and put it on a pedestal, and then picked up a container of fries and did the same, then was shocked that the burgers decayed faster than the fries.

For any study to be valid (for me) everything has to be 100% sterile for this to happen, and the bun went through at least 2 sets of hands (the person who made it, and his own when placing it down) therefore introducing god-knows-what bacteria onto it. The fries however, came out of a 350 degree fryer where absolutely ALL bacteria was decimated from them, then using a metal scoop placed into a cardboard container where the inside has likely never been touched.

Damn near anything will last incredibly long at that rate.

Better Mousetrap? No, Better Cardboard Box!

aren't we already at diminishing returns when it comes to paper-based things?

we can already recycle paper/cardboard pretty well right?. Just the fact that we're using paper instead of some sort of plastic is better on the environment.

then you gotta expend more resources building those templates that made the packing look so easy. so all that "saved" resources is now going to make box templates.

just seems like their efforts would be better spent on other fields. Obviously we need better recycling technology, but don't we have the paper recycling situation pretty much dealt with other than just getting more consumers to recycle their papers/cardboard

The assumption you're making is that these kids are the first people to look at changing packaging when they're not. There are some unbelievably clever card packing solutions out there. Just go and buy a large format HP printer and marvel at the way the box fits every component perfectly, its a real work of art. Rather than a simple box packed with polystyrene packaging they use almost exclusively cleverly folded card inserts and boxes to pack their stuff.

That's fine for very precise requirements but for general packing there's a simplicity to a cardboard box that's very useful. They're dead cheap to make, the material cost is tiny so any savings there really aren't going to be great.

It's the universalness of the product that makes it so useful. Everyone knows what to do with a box, and even if you'd never seen on before you could pretty quickly work out what to do. This clever solution they've found in this video is missing that bit. You'd need to print instructions or train people how to use it and then all your economy is gone.

It's a big industry and the box makers have very clever box designers already working for them and already doing incredibly clever things for lots of very large companies. There's no catching up to be done. The only difference between these kids and the real box designers is that the kids have a youtube video to impress people who aren't in the industry.

Regardless of whether or not this catches on, it does interest me how many years/decades it takes for intelligent human design to catch up with mass-manufacturing.

I'm not in your industry, but the first thing I noticed is how the "classic" box WASTES less cardboard when being die cut out of the cardboard roll, whereas their box won't fit together with other boxes, leaving huge chunks wasted between them.

robbersdog49 said:

Second, if you think I'm sending a box through any sort of delivery system when it will fall open when pressed in one pace, forget it.

This is one of those things that looks revolutionary and genius if you're not involved in the industry, but in reality it's just not really a big improvement and I can't see many if any companies going for it.

Black face being inappropriate to your personal sensibilities regarding historically offensive stereotypes but not offensive at all when prompted by a passionately opportunistic "trigger" for your particular brand of robotic pontification, the "evil" of racism being the most IMPORTANT and most DELETERIOUS indicator of ignorance or a lack of current-events knowledge or moral character.

Fuck making blackface an issue, it's as tired as the cardboard box of enlightenment you stand on to set yourself above the huddled masses...

Amazon Prime Air Service - 30 minute Amazon Deliveries

brycewi19 says...

So many potential problems with this.

Security while traveling in airspace.
Getting FAA clearance.
A collection of plastic delivery bins that are not as easy to recycle as the standard corrugated cardboard boxes.
Theft of really, really cool quad copters.
Battery life of quad copters probably really limits the radius of travel for deliveries.
Amazon would have to build way more processing centers, making costs go up.
etc...etc...etc
