Bill Nye Realizes He Is Talking To A Moron

zombieater says...

Fine...let's use Bill Nye's approach...

Follow the logic...

Let's say these puppets on my fingers are humans..."Oooh yay combustion, let's drive cars, build powerplants, make concrete, raise millions of cattle, and pump all these gases into the atmosphere." *Puppets dance*

What happens then? The levels of CO2, CH4, and CO (among other gases) increase. For example, CO2 levels have been increasing AND these activities lead to an increase in CO2 levels. We know this. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Mauna_Loa_Carbon_Dioxide-en.svg)

Let's then say that this orange is the earth -> O (Hello puppet humans!)

The orange is surrounded by something called the ozone layer. Say it with me kids: O-ZONE LAY-ER. Good. Think of it like a sock around the earth (*stuffs the orange in a sock*).

Now, the ozone layer is made up of greenhouse gases - which are usually very good because they trap heat and make it nice and warm for the puppet humans (Yay! *puppets dance*). Greenhouse gases include CO (Carbon monoxide - given off by cars), CO2 (Carbon dioxide - power plants, factories, cars, respiration, etc), CH4 (Methane - cows, pigs, industry, etc), and several others. More pretty pictures --> (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Greenhouse_Effect.svg)

So, what happens when the puppet humans increase greenhouse gases? The greenhouse effect gets stronger, and the sock turns into a sweater! *wraps the orange in a sweater* More gases = more trapping = more heat. *puppets melt*

As for global cooling, that dealt with pollution particulates, which have been declining in the atmosphere since government regulations went into effect in the USA (although pollutants from China and other developing countries are causing some slight cooling, which is, ironically, making climate change *less* prominent than it was actually thought to be at this point).

Look at the puppets. Look at them dance *dancing puppets* Okay, now take a nap.

But wait...right at the end there also seems to be some pretty messed up venting on what appears to be the water heater. I see some foam type stuff with some nice duct tape (NOT what duct tape is meant for) and that vent seems to loop around a bit before going who knows where. Can anyone say carbon monoxide?

^ I'm not sure what they are measuring. A quick search resulted in some air pollution numbers from 2000, but the US's portion of the world's output was a little below 45%.

Carbon Monoxide: 13.86%
Sulfur Dioxide: 8.41%
Nitrogen Oxide: 6.52%
Non-methane VOC: 9.78%

Maybe they meant 45% of the total released from all vehicles worldwide? That's the best I can think of.

Well after a small amount of research it appears that the nazies used Carbon monoxide as well as cyanide. so there goes his large chimney and and sealed room theory ore at minimum his necessity for it.

"homosexuals, physically and mentally disabled, and intellectuals. In early 1940, the use of hydrogen cyanide produced as Zyklon B was tested on 250 Roma children from Brno at the Buchenwald concentration camp.[4] On September 3, 1941, 600 Soviet POWs were gassed with Zyklon B at Auschwitz camp I; this was the first experiment with the gas at Auschwitz.[5]
One of the destroyed crematoria at Auschwitz concentration camp

Carbon monoxide was also used in large purpose-built gas chambers. The gas was provided by internal combustion engines (detailed in the Gerstein Report).[6]"

"The gas chamber at Auschwitz I was reconstructed after the war as a memorial, but without a door in its doorway and without the wall that originally separated the gas chamber from a washroom. The door that had been added when the gas chamber was converted into an air raid shelter was left intact.[10]"

Will a cannonball float in mercury?

obscenesimian says...

>> ^notarobot:
>> ^obscenesimian
Atomic weight (200.59) should be sufficient to tell you that the density of mercury vapor is much greater than that of nitrogen and oxygen, the largest components of air. If the vapors in the video http://www.videograter.com/video/Mercury-vapor-from-dental-fillings were mercury, the vapors should be falling not rising.
Do you need more details?

^Obscenesimian, You're absolutely right.
The air at surface of the Earth is always the coldest, because warm air rises and cold air falls, so no warmth would ever stay close to ground where people live. These currents of air are NEVER able to push or /a>

And furthermore you tard...... ahh whats the point of this argument!!? We should all be more worried about the asshats we encounter while hurtling at high speed in our mercury vapor spewing carbon monoxide emitting death traps.

Regarding Dan White's trial and future life from Wikipedia:

Trial

At his trial, White's defense argued that his mental state at the time of the killings was one of diminished capacity due to depression. Therefore, they argued, he was not capable of premeditating his act of violence, and thus was not legally guilty of first-degree murder. Forensic psychiatrist Martin Blinder testified that White was suffering from depression and pointed to several behavioral symptoms of that depression, including the fact that White had gone from being highly health-conscious to consuming sugary foods and drinks such as Twinkies and Coca-Cola. A remark by Blinder that the sugar might have worsened such a depression was widely reported as a claim that the sugar had contributed to the depression, giving rise to the derisive label the Twinkie defense. The prosecution played a recording of White's confession expecting it to all but guarantee a first degree murder conviction. However, several jurors wept as they listened to what was described as "a man pushed beyond his endurance." The jury found White guilty of voluntary manslaughter rather than first degree murder. Outrage within San Francisco's gay community over the resulting seven-year sentence sparked the city's White Night Riots; general disdain for the outcome of the court case led to the elimination of California's "diminished capacity" law.

Imprisonment and death

White served five years of his seven-year sentence at Soledad State Prison and was paroled January 6, 1984. Fearing he might be murdered in retaliation for his crimes, California State Corrections Officials secretly transported him to Los Angeles, where he served a year's parole. White's release prompted another round of demonstrations; protesters still outraged by the brevity of his sentence publicly ate Twinkies, implying that they themselves might not be responsible for any violence they engaged in. After satisfying the terms of his parole, White indicated he wanted to return to his lifelong home of San Francisco; this prompted Mayor Dianne Feinstein, who feared for his safety, to issue a public statement formally asking White not to return. Nevertheless, White did move back to San Francisco and attempted to restore his life with his wife and children.

His marriage soon disintegrated. On October 21, 1985, less than two years after his release from prison, White committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning in his garage by running a garden hose from the exhaust pipe to the inside of his car. White's body was discovered by his brother, Thomas, shortly before 2 p.m. the same day. The Irish folk song "The Town I Loved So Well" was playing on a continual loop on the car's cassette player.

White was buried at Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, California.

CNN Meteorologist: Accepting Global Warming is Arrogant

spawnflagger says...

>> ^Structure:
The Medieval Warming Period, or NAMBLA, was limited to a small region and didn't reach the temperatures we've had in the last 20-30 years.

I don't often laugh-out-loud, literally, but this nambla reference got me
Now, if you could say that comment while impersonating Norm McDonald, it would be comedy gold.

My biggest problem with the meteorologist, is that the comment "the oceans are so big" makes him seem ignorant on what a dramatic change even 1 degree can do - just look at what's happening to all the coral reefs.

Yes, I think humans can survive global warming, just not at the current numbers, and our diets will be much more bland.

Of course we'll all probably blow each other to bits whilst playing a game of global-thermo-nuclear-war - long before the earth becomes inhospitable. I just thought of something, if we launched a nuke into the atmosphere and detonated it there, what would it do to the carbon monoxide? (any physicists on the sift?). No I'm not suggesting that, because of the side effects of a nice big radiation cloud...

If you're already hooked and not strong enough at this point in your life to do those 72 hours (preferably not around anyone) (and yes it doesn't sound like long, but sheesh...) then why not do this and eliminate the nearly if not over 18mg of tar (carbon monoxide, blah blah blah) per cig.

U.S. Government's dirty Little secret about meat

djsunkid says...

This video is garbage. There are some issues with consumer awareness about the effect of CO treated meat, but the bottom line *SHOULD* be that CO treatment actually does extend the shelf life of meat. E Coli growth is slowed, rancidity is slowed, meat actually lasts longer.

If you wanted to talk about fish, then yes- I absolutely agree. The deterioration of fish is due to anaerobic processes within the flesh itself- enzymes breaking down the flesh, etc. CO treatment does nothing good for fish.

But it does actually improve meat's shelf life.

Often times, people will cite Canada as being an example of a country where CO has been banned in meat packaging. I've actually spoken with some of the people that made that happen, and we didn't ban it because it is wrong. We banned it because of "public perception". Which is to say, videos like this one.

Get your facts straight before you make a video like this and distribute it on the interwebs. Shame on the producer. At least the news report that you're using has some facts -- don't try and turn it into a huge government conspiracy.

Honda FCX Hydrogen Fuel Cell Car

Ok, thats not the worst looking alternative fuel car. Isn't the problem with hydrogen powered cars that we don't have access to reserves of pure hydrogen on Earth. We have to extract it from forms of hydrocarbons like natural gas which uses energy and has byproducts carbon monoxide, so the efficiency and cleanliness isn't really that good.

Yes, Hydrogen cars are not the best option because of the reasons you stated. Electric cars would be my primary choice so long as it had a secondary method as a backup in case it would be impossible to recharge the vehicle. I just posted this because it seems that many of the vehicle manufacturers are pushing for Hydrogen vehicles as a potential solution. Just about every major manufacturer has come up with similar Hydrogen cars for the year 2008.

There is a car manufacturer in Canada that is making some nice Electric cars and the EV1 was an outstanding electric vehicle. They were put under pressure by the petro and parts sales divisions to eliminate their electric vehicle line which is unfortunate and just goes to show how much power the petrolium industry has over us.

GM just came out with an electric hybrid that seems very interesting and it will still allow them to charge us for fuel and replacement parts which seems to be their main concern.
