James May's Tesla Model S has failed!

Khufu says...

while the dismantling seems problematic, 1 hour is nothing when messing with body panels. I'm impressed.

but any car battery can die when left undriven and other cars don't have trickle charger ports installed from factory, you have to add those yourself. (and should)

3 Simple Life Hacks

BSR says...

You can magnetize a much bigger screwdriver with way less wraps of wire and way quicker. Use a little thicker wire and just one layer covering about 3 inches near the tip of the screwdriver. Then just quickly spark the wire ends on a 12 volt car battery and you'll have a very strong magnetized tip.

What you do when a dying car alarm drops a beat

Khufu says...

this is awesome, not only because it's a sick beat out of a machine, but also because my car battery actually died today and it caused the alarm to go off and it was super annoying.

Testing a homemade railgun when...

draebor says...

Where's the power source? Other railgun videos I've seen require very large external power sources like arrays of car batteries to get through half a foot of ballistic gel. I think this is just a standard rifle in a costume.

How To Test a AA battery, Easiest Way For Any Battery Fast

The future of cycling is here

spawnflagger says...

For a bicycle, the gyroscopic effect would actually help maintain balance. The added weight isn't a big deal if the place you ride is mostly flat. There are some safety concerns of any appendages contacting the flywheel.

Even with awesome bearings, that flywheel probably loses most of its stored energy overnight. ("serious" energy storage flywheels are floating magnetically in a vacuum at 50,000 rpm)

For cars, batteries can store *many* more joules of energy per kg, so using flywheels instead of batteries would make the vehicle less efficient- since it's heavier.

Would be neat to make a pedal-car with flywheels, rider(s) would pedal constantly to add energy to the flywheels, even when at a red-light. Sell it as exercise equipment for short commutes.

US Soldier Picks up a Wired IED

Unsung_Hero says...

I was in Iraq and found an explosive device which was decently obvious. Two wires were coming out the back of the device which ran along a wall through a vent to a back room. My orders were to follow the wires and trace it to the source. They were connected to a car battery with a remote detonator. While defusing the device an enemy soldier grappled me from behind. I fought him off and delivered to rounds into his chest. He was dead before he hit the ground. It was pretty stressful so I turned of my xbox and decided to stop playing battlefield for the day.

FOX explains $4 gas when Bush was president

NetRunner says...

I love how the comment thread is almost entirely about hybrid car battery failure, and not about gas prices or politically-motivated spin.

For me, these clips are cause for a bit of soul-searching. I honestly don't recall exactly what I was saying about gas prices in 2008, but I certainly was saying Bush was at least partly to blame.

I didn't really have much proof of that, it was mostly "Bush is an oil man, and under his Presidency gas went from $1.50 to $4, so he's got to have something to do with it."

Mostly though, I think the real answer is that we do live in a free market economy, and oil price is set largely by supply and demand. The global supply has been flat, and possibly declining, while demand has been growing (mostly due to economic development in places like China and India).

The truth is we should have been making serious attempts to get ourselves off oil since at least the 70's, and because we've let Big Oil and their political allies have their way, worldwide, we're now reaching the point where the consequences of our apathy and/or defeat are becoming impossible to ignore.

Now it gets to 80 degrees in March in Ohio, gasoline costs $4/gal, and still the only remediation our political system seems likely to implement is more investment in oil production.

That could change quickly, of course. All we really need is for the right to wake up. Or drop dead. I'd be satisfied with either one at this point.

MythBusters - Top One Liners

They actually forgot my favourite "One Liner"
It came from the episode where they tested out the ancient battery, The build team (Then Tori, Scottie, and Kari) made a replica of the ark of the covenant, and hooked it up to a car battery.
Adam went in and touched it, got zapped, and Kari just stood there and said "Do you feel god?"
I seem to remember that was one of the very few times were Adam was shown being very pissed off. I think there is video somewhere of him in a Q and A were he mentions the producer that had put them up to that prank had been fired.

I actually remember the episode well, All of the build team actually tried it out hooked up to the car battery and each basically said "That's WAY too dangerous" and agreed not to use it on Adam.. however, for some reason, they decided last minute to use the battery, and Adam even said "You didn't hook this up to a car battery, did you?", to which they all reply "Oh..no.. I wish we had thought of that".

So he touched it, got zapped hard, and he did get REALLY pissed off. It's just that he swears, backs away, glares at them all, and Kari just smiles and says "Do you feel god?"

He then reemed them all the hell out, but for that brief moment it was hilarious.
