Thank you 81 million, thank you!

bobby, baby...check your head. slow your roll.

do you know don jr's squeeze was ca gov newsom's wife? go easy on the 'sleeping to the top' garbage. (sound like an old out-of-touch geezer)

your man-boy raw-dogged a porn star. go easy on the imprudent sexual escapades. (more fossilized thinking)

and the idea of 'selling out' shouldn't be a thing if you're truly a covfefool fan...or any of his acolytes...as that is the m.o. of the all of the russian-loving rascals. (the amount of gall would cover a forest)

honestly, try freezing your cantankerous old-coot comments. it solves nil, proves null, and offers zilch of a challenge to any other's viewpoints. (babe, you're missing more than realized)

succinctly; it's taking more away than giving. escape the trap...ya' angry badger.

the hypocrisy of women refusing to date short men

enoch says...

@newtboy
i showed this to my girlfriend who just happens to be 5'11" and she started bemoaning how she simply could not,nor ever be with a man shorter than herself.

to which i was "well,i sure am glad i am 6'2" because otherwise you would have had nothing to do with me".

her reply" you bet your sweet, old and cantankerous ass"

she gets hit on all the time by short dudes (often because i tell them she is single, and she loves short guys <---i am a dick to my girlfriend).

That seems to me a very inconsiderate way of interacting with someone else "I'm comfortable with this behavior and despite that you almost definitely have never done this in your life, I'm going to make you do it as if it's normal because I don't give a shit what you are comfortable with."

That's not a pat on the back. A pat on the back is a pat on the back.

But maybe that's just cantankerous old me.

Pffft.

I fail to see the problem, it's like pat on the back, really. I'd rather be fist-bumped than fisted.

Again, I don't necessarily think you're a sexist or a misogynist. I think you may be suffering from the same "boys club" attitude that many of the engineers I've worked with operate under. I just want you to introspect a little and consider the possibility.

Possibly. I'd like to think I don't suffer from that, although in reality, I cannot ignore the fact that we are all a product of the society we grew up in. In my defence, it is something I've thought about and I feel I'm open to the possibility of being wrong.

>> ^KnivesOut:

For the sake of argument, what if we replaced the masculine/feminine terms in your question with racial ones:
"why do we need to promote any career/vocation that is traditionally single [race] dominated to the other [race], e.g. [some profession] to [blacks], [some other profession] to [whites]?"
I'm drawing no conclusions about the importance or the value of one profession over the other, merely putting it into racial terms instead of sexual ones. To me, it feels just as icky.

I understand the ick factor there. But isn't there a difference between assuming a racial bias and a gender or even cultural bias? (bias is really the wrong word here, but I'm struggling to come up with a better one). I don't believe we can ignore the fact that different genders or cultures show aptitudes for different things (I believe culture is more important than race in determining this, in fact, I generally believe race to be largely irrelevant).

I guess my idea is to be "post-feminist/racist". I'd hope that we can accept individuals on their merits.

>> ^KnivesOut:

I believe that sexism is still widely accepted in our society, to a much higher degree than racial intolerance, or even tolerance of "alternate lifestyles". It's insidious, and it crosses the entirety of our society (sexism in every racial community.) Women still get paid less for the same work, they still have a harder time getting promotions (and then still make less money.) Women are even very sexist against each-other (you should see the looks my wife gets when she tells other mothers at school functions that she's finishing a compsci degree.)

This I agree with. Look at the current crop of games from E3. I utterly dislike the idea that anyone is judged in a career on anything other than their merits.

>> ^KnivesOut:

Maybe I'm overly touchy about it, and for that I apologize.

You probably shouldn't. In general, I am a cantankerous, grumpy bastard who's entirely too sure of the correctness of his own opinions.

What part of "magic and revolutionary" don't you understand Blankfist?

Steve Jobs is by all accounts a real asshole. I still like the products. Not because it's cool, trendy or makes me feel superior. I like it because it works best for me. I agree with @kronosposeidon that HTML5 and other open technologies will eventually supplant the stopgap that is Flash.

Google is pushing it themselves with their recent in browser game project for Chrome. They give faint praise to Adobe and talk about Flash collaboration, but I don't think there is love in the heart of the Google hacker for proprietary Flash. I do realize that the compiled .SWF format is kind of open- but the .FLA most definitely is not - am I right? I know there are some 3rd party tools that can compile SWF like Swift3D, but Adobe has a stranglehold on a "complete" authoring tool for Flash- and intends to keep it. Open indeed.

And just because I'm feeling cantankerous - I'll let Trip Hawkins put some icing on this cake - in a post aimed at professional developers who would actually like to make some money off their creations.

What's behind your avatar? (Sift Talk Post)

oxdottir says...

I put this on my profile page: The avatar is a picture of a Cthulhu cupcake, one of many baked and photographed by a friend, and photoshopped into solitary splendor by another friend. Given that it was a Cthulhu cupcake, I couldn't resist having it say "bite me," but I'm not really cantankerous, just irresistibly drawn to a quip.
