Do You Know Where The Candle Supply Is?

eric3579 says...

From the large thumbnail you can see two posts and a chain as a barrier. Seems they didn't have them in place. I'd think they would have the loading area outlined and a big painted warning on the ground. I'm guessing they will after this.

I love how she still had her priorities in order after the crash. They were on a mission and no crash would keep them from there candle supply's.

No one thought that maybe there should be a barrier here?

The Problems with Secret Santa - Numberphile

noims says...

Hang on. If she's going to be pedantic, so can I.

In the system she describes, everyone knows they can't be getting a present from the person they're giving to.

This means for her three-person system, everyone knows exactly who got them the bloody scented candle (or whatever), just like with the original flawed version. For more people you can guess with 1/n-2 accuracy which in my office is good enough given the number of people who gossip about what they bought and who they saw with what.

I say stick with the original, but you're allowed to draw yourself. If you do, feel free to express yourself by getting a PS4, a sock, a positive pregnancy test, or whatever you think would get the best reaction.

Removing rusted nuts using a candle and a lighter

CrushBug says...

I have to disagree. Changing tires is probably one of the most mundane things you can do to a car, short of refilling washer fluid or the gas tank. This is something anyone can do, usually because all the tools to do it come with your vehicle. I swap my wheels each winter/summer change and I certainly don't have a torch or penetrant. I do have a lighter and candles, though. Thankfully, I haven't ever hand this problem.

Wow, talk about pointless.

Anyone who does any work on cars will have a torch and a can of penetrant. Those work far better and faster than a candle and lighter. Seriously, use the proper tools for the job.

I'm not saying it IS bullshit, it just seems a bit weird I've never heard of it before. There's a point where "with this one weird trick" style videos have to be taken with a skeptical eye. I've been an adult for the entire lifetime of the internet, and with no previous information, I have to wonder if a Bic lighter has enough BTU's to heat up that nut, as the wheel stud and wheel make a decent heat sink.

In reference to your other post, paraffin wax (candle wax) is actually a component in surfboard and ski wax. I just think it's more effective at preventing rust, rather than seeping into it. As it is similar to kerosene, the video might be somewhat correct. I just doubt the Bic lighter part.

From what I've read when you heat up the nut from the bottom and drip/hold the candle on top the heat kind of wicks the wax into the threads, the same way that solder/flux wicks when soldering copper.

Just make sure to clean all the wax off when putting the nut back on or it will vibrate loose.

In a Valley of Violence Official Trailer 1, Ethan Hawke

SDGundamX says...

Yet another trailer where I feel like I've already watched the whole movie. I wish I could say this looks good. I like Ethan Hawke--just rewatched "Training Day" a couple of weeks ago--but I also just watched "For a Few Dollars More" and this doesn't look like it holds a candle to the old spaghetti Westerns.

I think the last good Western made was Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven." The "3:10 to Yuma" remake had some good moments too.

Zen Delivers 9 Minutes of Stupidity about Tiny Hydrogen

ugh...watching that was painful.
reminds me of my time running a metaphysical shop with my girlfriend at the time.

she had got it in her head that she wanted to take the shop in a new direction which was in the form of similar "miracle" cures such as this.

the arguments we had were epic!

i just didnt see a need nor a reason.we already had massage therapy, aroma therapy and reiki.we made our own lotions and soaps and had a massive line of candles.why would she want to delve into supplements? that were unproven and possibly dangerous?

well,i lost that argument and after a few months i understood her reasoning=money.
good lord our customers would spend a fortune on these supplements, which made all kinds of claims (all with zippo research to back those claims up),and all unregulated.

and our customers SWORE that these bullshit remedies worked and that they felt better, more energetic and clear-minded.placebo effect on steroids.

of course my girlfriend would never actually admit that profit was her motive.that would go against her own professed morality, but that is what it was:greed.

that was the beginning of the end for our relationship.i was sincerely attempting to help people and her behavior was a disillusionment that my moral compass just could not assimilate.

i am a man of faith, and every aspect of my life is directed by that faith, from politics to personal interactions, and i had lost faith in her.

i find it reprehensible and disgusting to profit off of people when they are the most fragile and vulnerable, and i refuse to engage in that form of vile practice.

An historian's take on what went wrong with Islam

vil says...

It wasnt al-Ghazalis fault that muslim society adopted his idea that math is evil and made it doctrine. He was long gone by the 16th century.

It was the fault of the muslim religous authorities, but you cant say that in one sentence, if you are a muslim, even today. You have to go on and on for half an hour, naming all the muslim famous scientists, just like you would have to name all the famous russian scientists if you were a russian professor talking to a russian audience.

Even if 17th century muslim society had a Newton or Leibniz or Kopernik or Kepler and they managed to publish, what impact would their discoveries have had if they could not be used in practice for religious reasons?

It hardly matters who invented the lightbulb, if you have to keep using candles for religious reasons.
