Claims Israel culling Ethiopian Jews

rougy says...

I won't be snarky for the sake of D9, but...this is not absolutely unheard of.

Israel can't have it both ways.

You can't be a real country and at the same time cater to a certain "race" (Jews) any more than the Vatican can can.

Cha cha cha.

Parkour Fail Compilation

The music is by Jacques Offenbach. It is called "Orpheus in the Underworld," and the section is "The Infernal Gallop." From Wiki: The Infernal Gallop from Act II, Scene 2 is famous outside classical circles as the music for the "Can-can".

FOX's Shep Smith: Was that Canadian Health Care Story Fair?

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

Federal...provincial

I expect the opposition would be a lot less strident to Obamacare if there was specific language in any of hte bills that created a system of state programs with only loose federal oversight. Problem is, the bills in Congress aren't talking about that. People like me have a hard time believing the feds are just going to step back. All current bills point to the creation of a large federal system where money is sent to Washtington and then doled out from there ala Medicare & Medicaid.

CBO estimates

I only brought up the CBO as an example to show that even Obama's own agency does not expect this plan to 'save' money. You're using it like a Jungian archetype. "If the CBO says it will cost 2 trillion, that means it'll only cost 1.4 trillion." Uh - sure - that's how it all works... :eyeroll:

Use whatever 'estimate' you like. Use some estimate that says Obamacare will magically produce free money on trees and the whole ball of wax will only cost $6.50 and a pack of Mentos. The specific estimate in question you prefer is utterly irrelevant. The point is that any federal program created to manage health care will end up costing WAY more than estimated and will manifest as a massive money pit that sucks in billions and spits out below-average results ala Medicare/aid.

What we should be comparing is out of pocket cost for health care as a percentage of after tax income

No - I'd say we should be looking at total out of pocket costs including taxes. That means we don't just look at how much I'm spending on private care, but we also look at how much we have to pay for the whole deal. Every bill in congress to date is not projected to cost individual taxpayers 'less' when all costs are tallied. There will be taxes, monthly payments to a 'plan', office visit fees, co-pays, prescription drug costs, 'for service' fees for any 'non approved' treatments. And on and on and on.

People talking as if Obamacare will just be "Yay - I can go anywhere and get treated for anything and it's all FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!" Uh - no - that's total bullcrap. You have only to look at Medicare and Medicaid today to see the future of Obamacare. Substandard coverage, high costs, and big fat government involvement in what you can & can't have. The writing is right there on the wall. It's as plain as a Bulgarian pin-up. How anyone can delude themselves into thinking Obamacare will be the FIRST program in government history to buck the trend is beyond me.

Winstonfield lives in a world where if everyone owns a gun, everyone is safer.

Typical neolib issue avoidance. I live in a world where common sense & reality must be dealt with. Obamacare ignores both.

What You Won't See On National Cable News

JiggaJonson says...

Strangely enough when I discuss it with people they often mention the system proposed as a fascist movement of some sort, that much I can attest to. There are not enough hours in teh day to listen to all the right wing bullshit they must be filling their heads with but the people in opposition to the plan, simply put, are misinformed.

Some oppose it because they dont want one gov run system (not proposed)
Some oppose it because they dont want tax dollars going towards abortions (laws on teh books against gov funded abortions already)
Some oppose it because they dont want the gov choosing their doctors (already doesnt happen with medicare and furthermore nearly all private insurance already dictates which doctors/hospitals u can/can't go to)
The list goes on...

The sad thing is, misinformation is being asserted as fact and people are too lazy to get info from a reliable source or simply multiple sources for verification, spreading rumors is much more fun.

Me? I talk about it every chance I get because my quality of life has been seriously effected by privatized insurance and their unwillingness to cover people with legitimate insurance claims.

In reply to this comment by Farhad2000:
^ The stupid belief is that private health insurance if truly deregulated would cover people. Which is inanely dense. Look at the insurance market in any other commodity, the insurer is not on your side. Their incentive is to deny claims not fulfill them. This might work in strict legally defined markets like housing or car insurance but not health as health depends on alot of factors beyond people's control. My private health insurance may not cover pre-existing conditions, so if I have a heart defect and I get a heart attack. That could be thought of as a pre-existing condition.

Health care should not be in the realm of the private market, especially through provision of insurance. It's not a tangible commodity where transactions and coverage can be strictly defined.

Not mentioning the usual blah blah US spends the most, covers the least, has the worst health care indicators.

Personally as someone living outside of the US am extremely fascinated in the ferocity of opposition to Obama's health care reform, its not perfect and very middle ground, being still very much rooted in the private insurance industry. But jesus the opposition to it sounds is akin to Obama imposing fascism.

Screw tank - Russian tank from Cold War era

Morganth says...

I've only been able to find tiny bits of info on this. The Soviets weren't the only ones to try this out. Supposedly, even Chrysler screwed around with the idea. (Ha ha ha)

A screw propelled vehicle works phenomenally over terrain such snow, ice, or mud. However, smooth terrain (like a road) is actually difficult. Treads can can conform to the surface they're on, where a solid screw cannot. Also, the ride was incredibly rough since the idea never went far enough for a type of suspension to be developed (which are easily put wheels).

Still Bush After All These Years

Sagemind says...

I think I can can stand firm that bush did "Nothing" for any of our country's security and that he not only nothing for the economy, he helped to drain money out of the government's funds to fuel the corporations that glut on war.

It is truly amazing how much money the government can pull out of nowhere when they want to fund a war but cannot afford to fund basic education and job training programs during non war situations. Imagine how many people could have been educated better and had access to higher education, how many social programs could have been funded for the betterment of society, how many tax breaks could have been created so people could afford to feed their families, how many jobs could have been created through new innovations and training, if only that money was spent on the Americans that funded the government in the first place.

War has costs a ton of money as everyone can see. who got the money? Who has it now? Who is profiting?

"They say 'hidden costs' have pushed the total to about $1.5 trillion - nearly twice the requested $804bn (£402bn)." http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7092053.stm - yes, no one knows the true amount - but holy crap, look at the $$ being spent on war and killing, and for what, false premises.

The money doesn't just dry up, it changes hands. And this kind of money doesn't land in your bank account or mine. It is sitting in the accounts of Bush and his buddies.

No one can convince me that bush hasn't 'helped' screw the economy and people of the US just a little bit.

just my 27¢ worth!

^What did you not understand about about my last statement? It's a fake, obviously. This video is about being able to laugh. Period. End of story. Can you NOT even laugh at a fake? I can. Can you? Obviously not. You'd rather be smugly satisfied in declaring "FAKE!" than even remotely surrender a mild guffaw at an entertaining parody. Oh well; 'tis your call. If it gives you orgasms to write "FAKE!" then I won't hold it against you. Lord knows you have greater issues to deal with besides me.

Final Fantasy 6 speed demo 4:48

>> ^Nemeskiz:
Upvote for Final Fantasy classics, you just got to love the old games. Btw, my counter says that the vid is about 1 hour long, but havent seen it all the way through so dont know if its the 1 hour or all 5 hours.

When I first uploaded this video, I saw that as well... That was the reason why I watched the whole thing from the sift to be sure it works... turns out that it still plays it in whole, but you actually can't see the 4: part since the video screen isn't big enough to show it...

>> ^dystopianfuturetoday:
Mas, did you watch the whole thing?

Actually I did... I enjoyed Final Fantasy III when I was younger and thought about watching it again... During the time I was watching it, I remembered that Speed Demo archives actually had their own embed codes can can used used on web sites... at first I could do it, but then I found an alternate and got this video up...
