PT Anderson talks about film vs. digital
one of the biggest problems at the time PTA said this was the lack of sufficient contrast sensitivity in video camcorders, which was one of the biggest reasons why things shot on video could not attain the "film look". however, with the recent advances in HD-video camcorders and the increasing affordability of them for individual consumers, that major barrier has been for the most part brought down. granted, lack of adequate lighting, camera setup, boom mics, or post-production/editing can and does still sufficiently ruin many videos, but it is now much easier to get a video to resemble film. when done well and transferred later to film and projected, the differences are slight.
so i guess what i'm saying is with greater tech innovations, i disagree with him about the method of shooting a subject, but agree with him completely about the method of projection and its memorizing abilities.

First-Person Soccer
wait, so it's a robot camcorder that's playing soccer? with lifelike hands and arms?
lucid movement (gorgeous slow motion stuff)
slowmo is my favouritest thing in the world
I bought the sony hdr-sr12 camcorder recently and it allows you to record 3 secs of footage at 240fps. Makes for some cool slowmo shots. I made a video for vimeo that you can see at http://www.vimeo.com/850181
Holy Sh*t! There's no way that's real.
his girlfriend is really good at keeping the camcorder steady while filming.
ahh, right. a tripod.
Cloverfield: Giant Monster Descends On New York City
OK, lets keep a shitty version of a camcorded trailer _camcorded_ in a theater and throw out the real trailer.
Zero Punctuation: Yahtzee does the GDC
"If this was really shown at the GDC, it makes sense why a few words were bleeped out..."
it was, there's other youtube videos of it taken from camcorders.
Super slo-mo, explosions and skateboarding.
So, is that some digital effect or where they actually blowing stuff up? Perhaps a mix of the two?
Either way... damn, skate videos have come a long way from the fella on the skateboard with the camcorder and the fisheye lens.
Still, never going to beat Secondhand Smoke in my book.
Francis Ford Coppola predicts Youtube back in '91
>> ^Trancecoach:
not much of a prediction. This was obviously going to happen once VHS came to town (all but the fat girl reference, that is, which I think was a projection anyway).
Yes, camcorders have been accessible for a long time. I'd say that it wasn't at all obvious what the distribution model would be. Coppola's prediction has more to do with what content would become popular, and on that point I think we can agree that he ate his words.

Oh, and btw, 1987 called. It wants it's VHS camcorder back.
In all seriousness, good luck to him. Sounds fun.
A new toy (Blog Entry by 8383)
Oh man, when I was in high school back in the [garbled], we had a macro feature on the family video camera. I used to shoot so much [crap] awesome stuff with that thing! Well, back then it seemed way cool to me, but doesn't every garden variety Federico Fellini think he's the shit with a low-rent VHS camcorder?
All American Boneheads
For a bunch of guys, eighteen to twenty some years old, This doesent seem that bad. Its not like they new that there buddy, with the camcorder, was going to put it on the web. Im sure quite a few of them will be damaged from there time spent in the military. I feel sorry for anyone who has been exposed to the horrors of war. They are just kids.
Redneck napalm - Shooting at a propane tank
I don't think they used a camcorder. THere is no image stabilization at work which leads me to believe it is either a cellphone or stills camera in video mode.
I'm Headin' West... (Blog Entry by firefly)
Excellent! Coincidentally, Fox Sports Grill also at the Irvine Spectrum is where we happened to meet with Dag. Looks like that should be the starting point of consideration for all future OC SiftUps.
Kidding.

Again, I'll handle reservations once I've heard back from Jonny. Hopefully YDJ will bring his camcorder so we can create macro HD videos of each other.
540 Spin Kick Triple Board Break! (5 Seconds)
loaded with explosives?? smokeless explosives I see... balsa? Recognize the wood type by the sound of the crack from a crappy camcorder eh?
I would give this guy the benefit of the doubt, folks. First of all, he's doing an airborne 540. Second, he is wearing a black belt. Now, you dont even see a lot of black belts doing airborne 540 triple kicks, so, you can think, hey - he is probably pretty damn good. Third, you will notice he is pretty fast. I bet that leg coming full circle at that speed has more than enough power to break a board and throw some confetti (the confetti flies in the direction of the kick mind you...) or do you think they aim the "explosive" charges to shoot the confetti in the direction ofthe kick?
Charity Mascot is Policed for Intefering with News Broadcast
Anyone who really thinks the charity dude in the suit is in the wrong here is out of their f*cking mind.
The news people are obviously, clearly and categorically, completely and utterly in the wrong and so are the meathead mafia nazi brainwashed thicko NY cops.
The camera guys are treating people on the street like extras on a movie set. It's totally shameful and pathetic. I'm actually surprised the cops didn't move away the guy with the camcorder as well.
