Clueless Old Guy says Clueless Crap

VoodooV says...

I don't know who that woman is...and it is Fox news, so I don't know if I would use the word "obvious" given the calibre of women I see on Fox News typically.

Well i suppose the sort of obvious 'thing' would be having to deal with imbecilic people like this.

Rendering would be pretty much instant, as they're simply mapping shot footage onto generated 3d models as texture, in a sense.

It's generating the models that can be pretty intensive, and if they're actually getting reliable results of the quality seen here with only a few cameras, their software is pretty good. The automated solutions I've seen for scene capture have been a bit off from the mark still, having trouble with reflective surfaces especially and generally being a bit unpredictable. This looks quite impressive.
Probably they take advantage of having a fixed location, so they can pre-calibrate the camera fixes in advance, improving the quality of the spatial interpretation and probably speeding things up as well.

AeroMechanical said:

The question is: how long did it take to render? Is it hours or even days on large render farm for each clip? That might limit the practicality, certainly for sports broadcasts at least.

On the other hand, I hope in 10 or 15 years, I can watch sports and put the camera wherever I want in real time or put on my VR headset and watch as though I were standing next to the pitcher or sitting on the wing of a race car. That probably will happen and that is an AWESOME prospect.

Atomic Cannon test-fires a "baby" nuke

radx says...

I was just about to question the listed weight of the projectile as well.

The main armament of the Scharnhorst-class battlecruisers had the same calibre and fired shells weighing in at around 250kg, so I figured Atomic Annie to be in the same ball park. Even the eggs Dora lobbed around were only about 7t apiece.

Although it takes the fun out of the process, WP lists the weight at 364kg.

Comedian Lewis Black on Xbox One

spawnflagger says...

The new Kinect has significant upgrades from the Kinect Accessory that's out now (for Xbox 360). This wiki page has a good overview: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinect#Kinect_on_the_Xbox_One

This video uses both (new one for the always-on controversy) and old one for the beer-robot. Which is OK, cause it's a comedy piece.

The first Kinect could do facial detection to login to a xbox live account, but it requires good lighting, and isn't very fast (for me, it could never get past calibration, so I don't use that feature- games work fine without it). The new one is supposed to do this (login) better, but also detects facial expressions in real time, like if the player is smiling.

Aside from that, did they say it was the Xbox 360 Kinect that could do facial detection? Because I know that is an intended feature for the XboxOne.

Mieders Alpine Coaster - Frustrated Guy Crashes

Nah see, mindless tourists on their first-go aren't expected to master the thing on a one-time downhill-The guy with the cam has done it a few times perhaps, if not, he's definitely douche.

The girl is visibly distraught and shaken after that whiplash (which can seriously mess someones life up, much less a holiday) and the only saving grace for the douche when he came to stop was to jump out and inquire as to her condition, and that with sincere apologies...You gotta understand, choggie has this particularly sensitive douchebag meter that stays calibrated, with updates to software daily-I only had to watch this once-Upvoted for the thrill of a new experience to write down on the bucket-list, not the cunt filming himself douching-out.

A Vote for Obama is a Vote for Romney - Literally

PostalBlowfish says...

Screens should be calibrated and tested before an election. Like ALL of them. How hard is it to go through a few dozen machines checking that all the buttons do the right thing before you put them out for voters to use?

Some states tried to get special access to the software code in some instances with write access. There is no need for that. As artician correctly pointed out, this is not a complicated proposition. It's almost this simple:

if keypressed(Candidate1)==true and keypressed(CONFIRM)==true then Candidate1++
else Clear and Return
else if keypressed(Candidate2) ...and so on.

You only want write access into this process if you don't agree that a confirmed vote for candidate1 always counts for candidate1, etc.

I also agree with SlipperyPete that this is not a very bright way to try and mess with elections. If you could in fact write into the tabulation records, there is no reason you couldn't show the correct check mark on the screen and even print out the expected printout and then reverse the vote immediately after logout every 6th time anyway. You might leave a trail, but it will only be subject to examination if the totals are close, so you just make sure it won't be.

That happened to my wife. She voted of Romney and and it was switching to Obama. She finally pocked around the screen to get the right vote. This was in the Carolinas not PA. Looks like same time of machine.
I would not call it fraud - Seems like a calibration issue. Still it should have been reported to the officials at the site.

I find Hi-Def to be jarring when watching old beloved films. It loses that dreamy painted quality and looks more like closed circuit television. Filmmakers put a lot of effort into creating a beautiful celluloid pallor, which HD Blu-Ray usually just rudely brushes aside. I have a sneaking suspicion that QT feels the same way, because he is a student of classic cinema. I'll be curious to see if QT finds a way to keep the old school warmth. Either way, this looks awesome. Take my money, please.

Are you sure you don't have some kind of motion smoothing on, or some similar effect? Because it sure sounds like it. A good Blu-ray transfer of a classic film looks far, far more film-like than any DVD is able to muster. Modern TVs default to the closed circuit television, or soap opera look, which absolutely baffles me.

I read an article that said that a good rule of thumb is that any video setting that can be turned off on a TV should be turned off. Modern TVs look like garbage by default. Though I suspect that you know how to calibrate your TV, and in that case I honestly have no idea what you're talking about. Blu-rays are awesome.
