Dog rescued after spending 10 years tied to a chain outside

Animal abuse and neglect is a world-wide problem; lately however, it seems to be getting exponentially worse in British Columbia. I'm sure it's the same everywhere (it's just that most of the media I see on this is specific to Greater Vancouver), you can't get through the 6pm news without hearing about another animal some person has tortured.

Lloyd Pye Loves His Alien Skeleton

nach0s says...

This is interesting, but it raises red flags that the skull is named 'star child' before any real conclusions are made. Where is the alternate explanation of what this is? It certainly seems that the desired outcome is what is driving the interest in this skull. He also keeps referring to science as 'they', without citing any actual studies or inquiries.

I'm not a scientist, but the theory of evolution states that occasional random mutations appear in the genetic lineage of a given species, and when that particular trait is passed on, the development of that species changes. Could the genetic differences in this skull be explained as a mutation that didn't get passed on? Isn't that more likely than "a human mother gave birth to an alien baby"?

Here are some excerpts from the wiki entry:

DNA testing in 1999 at BOLD, a forensic DNA lab in Vancouver, British Columbia found standard X and Y chromosomes in two samples taken from the skull, "conclusive evidence that the child was not only human (and male), but both of his parents must have been human as well, for each must have contributed one of the human sex chromosomes". Further DNA testing at Trace Genetics, which specializes in extracting DNA from ancient samples, in 2003 recovered mitochondrial DNA from both skulls. The child belongs to haplogroup C, while the adult female belongs to haplogroup A. Both haplotypes are characteristic Native American haplogroups, but the different haplogroup for each skull indicates that the adult female was not the child's mother. Trace Genetics was not able to recover useful lengths of nuclear DNA or Y-chromosomal DNA for further testing.

Explanations
Potential explanations for the skull's unusual features include the use of cradle boarding on a hydrocephalic child, brachycephaly, Crouzon syndrome, congenital hydrocephalus, or potentially progeria.

Abandoned Kitten Saved

I suppose it is possible, but my faith in humanity and in the humane treatment of animals has been deteriorating for awhile. Especially after recent stories like this one which is pretty near to where I live. This is pretty disturbing:

Is there any possibility it was abandoned on accident?
I just don't like to think that people can do those sort of things so easily.

At :47 and elsewhere you hear the camera guy's normal voice. I'm sorry to disappoint your "Tea Party" theorizing. It's a pretty common racist "joke" here in British Columbia - to mock FNs with that stereotyped speech pattern.

Dude, you're on crack. He was in the midst of a spit of laughter. Are you serious right now?

The only problem I see here is qualm's outright accusation, like he's constantly on the lookout for stuff like that. There is a term for people like that, which I can't recall at the moment, but essentially, it amounts to someone, who he himself is a racist, by expecting it, and projecting it onto others, as if perpetually fearful of it. As a result, they attack first, often incorrectly accusing others.

Holy cow! There's a single word that sums up all that?

There's a word I can't remember but it means that feeling of amazement you have when someone tells you something completely surprising and it really intrigues you but at the same time you're a little doubtful but you're thinking, "hey, why would he lie about something like that", but at the same time you're wondering if maybe that person's a little confused but despite all that you're still really interested to get to the bottom of it and you think maybe you might invest some time into figuring it out but, "Oh, Hey! Is that a bag of Reese's Pieces in my drawer? I forgot I had those...what was I talking about?"
Ugh...can't remember the word for that.

Race baiting, maybe? Defensive racism? Often, people who point out and are on the lookout for racism, are, in fact, racists themselves. Especially when there is no sane explanation for that person's perceived racist impression.

How is that so difficult for you to understand?

That is such a long bow to draw- I had no idea what you were talking about, even after three or four viewings. There is racism in the world, but this is not it.>> ^qualm:

Portsmouth Police exempt from the law

nanrod says...

OK people enough of the radio crap. Whether or not it's legal for a cop to park in a no parking spot will depend on the jurisdiction you are in. I live in British Columbia, Canada and the appropriate sections of the Motor Vehicle Act of BC are shown below. To summarize, a vehicle is an emergency vehicle if it is operated by a police officer in the performance of his duties (it doesn't have to be an emergency situation) and an emergency vehicle is exempt from most provisions of the act provided it is operated safely and with regard to the nature of the use of the vehicle at the time.

To sum up with examples; parking in a no parking spot while having lunch in a donut shop - not permitted; parking safely on the side of the road in a no parking spot while observing the ebb and flow of traffic and ever ready at any time to pursue blankfist, I mean violators - specifically permitted.

While I'm as much against cops taking liberties or gaining advantages the rest of us do not enjoy, to think that a situation like the one in this video is the first step on some slippery slope is just a tad paranoid.

And the guy in the video is a douche

"emergency vehicle" means any of the following:

...
(c) a motor vehicle, or cycle as defined in Part 3, driven by a peace officer, constable or member of the police branch of Her Majesty's Armed Forces in the discharge of his or her duty;

Exemption for emergency vehicles

122 (1) Despite anything in this Part, but subject to subsections (2) and (4), a driver of an emergency vehicle may do the following:

(a) exceed the speed limit;
(b) proceed past a red traffic control signal or stop sign without stopping;
(c) disregard rules and traffic control devices governing direction of movement or turning in specified directions;
(d) stop or stand.

(2) The driver of an emergency vehicle must not exercise the privileges granted by subsection (1) except in accordance with the regulations.

(3) [Repealed 1997-30-2.]

(4) The driver of an emergency vehicle exercising a privilege granted by subsection (1) must drive with due regard for safety, having regard to all the circumstances of the case, including the following:
(a) the nature, condition and use of the highway;
(b) the amount of traffic that is on, or might reasonably be expected to be on, the highway;
(c) the nature of the use being made of the emergency vehicle at the time.

Fair enough, but was stomping on his head really necessary?

Yes. He refused to obey directions to keep his head down. No cop with his gun out is going to reach down and do it. And a kick to the ribs is not uncalled for either, it means that again they're not doing what they're told to do. They're techniques to get compliance. There isn't anything excessive in the entire video, it's based on the suspects reactions and behavior.

>> ^kir_mokum:
skeeve: VPD (vancouver police) is know for using excessive for regularly and being, er, less than professional, so to speak. much like the abbotsford police in this video. just look at the Dziekanski case with is going on now.

You mean the RCMP? Yeah different police force too. Then again the VPD deals with some of Canada's worst shit heads on a regular basis due to BC's revolving door court system.

Or walking on the backs of his legs?
Totally unnecessary.

The head-stomping seems like it wasn't called for but the guy in the black shirt is not following directions. That could've been handled differently IMO.

First kick is hard to say, probably over reaction but after that the guy does what he's been told.

The last kick.. Hmm.. Very sudden and sharp moves is NOT what you want to do when someone is pointing a gun to your head. If i were that cop i think i would've done the same and take in to consideration that he is monitoring two guys at the same time.

This just looks like it is excessive, but there are hundreds of videos out there that clearly are that.
