The Westy Affair (Sift Talk Post)

joedirt says...

As a long time connoisseur of westy.. .I'm unsure if this is in fact the original westy of yesteryear. Maybe he has dropped his persona just a little bit to type proper sentences, but I don't like his dropping his character persona. It's like Borat using a british accent.

Dag, yes the casual sifter might have seen that post and complained... but that is not what happened. Supposedly high intellect people that know 'westy' and his comments over a long period of time are feigning outrage and misunderstanding at what was clearly an parody comment that no reasonable person could assume it was meant seriously.

The fact that it was so obviously over the top indicated it was just a poor taste, poor humor, attempt at saying something stupid.

So if it is all comments cannout offend anyone, then fine. But if you are trying to stick up for whiners who are fanning them selves and having fainting spells, then I feel sorry for you.

The Daily Show: Jon Stewart interviews Sacha Baron Cohen

So can we ban his racist ass now? (Wtf Talk Post)

dannym3141 says...

Satire has to be carefully expressed in obvious terms and is usually an over-exaggeration of the real-life bigotry that you're trying to shine a line upon.

- Sacha-Baron Cohen's "Bruno" and "Borat" are satirical - they are extreme over exaggerations of a stereotype for comedy and/or the exposition of bigotry.
- Ricky Gervais often does satire - such as pointing out things said about people in wheelchairs, with physical disabilities, etc. for the same effects as above.

Satire is if i went up to a bunch of racists and said something like that to illicit a response. If i simply said it on international TV like the oscars, "Thanks for the reward, oh and by the way...!" - that would be racism. Or if i stood by a banana stand mentioning it. Or if i stood outside a zoo saying "When they eat a banana, please observe that...."

See in this video, no one was even referring to anything about the black race nor was anyone being racist for there to be a satirical post. The poster in question took the example of how a monkey might open a banana, formed a link between "monkey" and "black person", and made a comment. The racism here is that the link is IN WESTY'S HEAD, not in the post nor the video.

For those reasons, this can't be classed as satire. I believe it's a decent argument on my part. Let's face it, if there aren't reasonable qualifications of satire then you can wash away anything offensive as satire. Let the KKK be a satirical organisation if you like.

There was no link to racism or black people on the post for there to be any satire, it was in his own head. Anyone who found his comment funny - you are laughing at a racist joke, not satire. No link, no satire. There is always some kind of link to someone being mocked for their bigoted ways. You can't just blurt out racist things and claim it to be satire.

Fuck him.
He's crass and, obviously, an attention whore.
But everyone has to kiss his ass, I guess.
Smooch the heinie.
$$$$$
Who else got away with that shit?
Mel Brooks? Woody Allen? Jerry Lewis?
Not even. Not one of them used people as props.

but isn't that the point and what makes the character so funny? i totally agree that everything about him is completely outrageous and distasteful - thats why we like him! personally i love his slapstick humour the most (e.g. the naked fight in borat) i think he is a talented physical actor and often demonstrates a keen awareness of his body, gesuture and space.

Feeling the Hate In Jerusalem on Obama's Cairo Address

braindonut says...

^ No, I think they call themselves drunk, dumbass frat boys. We saw them on Borat...

I don't think anyone needs to make excuses for a bunch of drunk, belligerent asshats. You'd be amazed the kind of bullshit that comes out of a young, aggressive, testosterone soaked, alcohol infused, male mouth. And clearly, that girl was just an idiot with a few too many drinks, too. We have plenty of those in the American south and tons sprinkled throughout our universities.

I don't think this video is a fair representation of anything.

Which is a shame. I'd love to see random interviews with real Israelis on the topic of Obama's speech.

C.) Eminem did know Cohen was going "fall" down but was probably to stop a couple feet above him. The extra distance to get nuts-on-chin was pure Borat fuckover.

But you forget to mention the important point. Someone put their balls in Eminem's face. The world is a better place for it.

Yeah, that pretty much drains the comedy value out of what Sacha Baron Cohen does when the other party is in on it. He did the same thing at the end of Borat with Pamela Anderson pretending to be surprised by his antics.

Without the element of watching real people react sincerely, it's just mediocre improv comedy.

What irritates me more is that this is exactly the sort of thing he would do to an ordinary person without warning them. But he knows that celebrities have money, and money buys you more legal rights.

Besides, this shouldn't be too shocking. I'm sure it's not the first time eminem has enjoyed an impromptu tossed salad.
