The Worst Nobel Prize Ever Awarded

poolcleaner says...

You know how the pressures in life can cause people to do crazy things? And if a person does too many crazy things, then that person is crazy. Sometimes you can do things to keep from going crazy, like drinkin', or havin' sex; but, if the craziness goes too far, sometimes the only thing left to do is to cut out that part of the brain that makes you crazy.

That kind of brain surgery is called a frontal lobotomy. Maybe this song will help you understand what I mean.

"Jimmy and I were brothers.
We went down different paths.
Jimmy always listened to my mother,
And me, I never like to take a bath.

"As we grew and tumbled through adulthood
The pressure caused emotional drain.
So now I'm slowly dying in the bottle
And Jimmy has to live with half a brain.

"Yes, me, I've got a bottle in front of me,
And Jimmy has a frontal lobotomy.
Just different ways to kill the pain t"he same.

"But I'd rather have a bottle in front of me,
Than have to have a frontal lobotomy.
I might be drunk, but at least I'm not insane.

"Jimmy let his troubles drive him crazy.
He never tried to drown it in a drink.
I know that drinking makes my thinking hazy,
But at least I still have brains enough to think.

"Jimmy's got a brain that isn't stable.
He doesn't have the sense to say his name.
I'm sorry that his doctor was unable
To remove the proper portion of his brain.

"Yes, me, I've got a bottle in front of me,
And Jimmy has a frontal lobotomy.
Just different ways to kill the pain the same.

"But I'd rather have a bottle in front of me,
Than have to have a frontal lobotomy.
I might be drunk, but at least I'm not insane.

"Funny how the world works.
People can be real jerks.
Some prefer the tension over booze.

"Either way it ends the same.
Hard to beat the living game.
Might as well enjoy it while you lose.

"When I need a drink I start to shiver
And Jimmy always viewed it with concern.
But I'd rather have cirrhosis of the liver
Than an intellect that's second to a fern.

"I wonder if old Jimmy's gonna hear it
When I tell him that his logic wasn't sound.
They'll dose him up on lots of evil spirits
When they take him to the psychiatric grounds.

I might be drunk, but at least I'm not insane!"

I Give My Money To Millionaires And Dont Give A Fuck About U

eric3579 says...

I don't give to the Big Issue Seller
'Cause he's probably on heroin
I walk past him with a grin
And if I can, I kick his dog

No I don't give to the busker
He's talentless and lazy
He's ruining the country
I think he should get a job

Instead I give my money to:
Walmart, for its tax evasion
Primark, for its child labour
Texaco for the next invasion
Don't give a fuck about you

Give my money to the millionaires
Give my money to the millionaires
Give all my money to the millionaires
And I don't give a fuck about you

No, I don't give to the beggar
That's what I pay my taxes for
The government should shove him through the door
Of a prison cell, or a hospital

I don't give to the homeless pisshead
He'll blow it all on booze instead
Such a waster doesn't deserve a bed
What do you mean welfare is dead?

Because I give my money to:
Walmart, for its tax evasion
Primark, for its child labour
Texaco for the next invasion
Don't give a fuck about you

Give my money to the millionaires
Give my money to the millionaires
Give all my money to the millionaires
And I don't give a fuck about you

Give my money to:
Starbucks, in case they get hard up
BP, 'cause making living ain't easy
Barclays, do they look after me?
And I don't give a fuck about you

Give my money to the millionaires
Give my money to the millionaires
Give all my money to the millionaires
And I don't give a fuck about you

Why Tipping Should Be Banned

MrFisk says...

I've worked the back of the house (dish washer, prep cook, pantry cook, line cook), and the front of the house (bartender, server).

I never got tipped in the back of the house, but I worked harder and utilized more skills. I got paid hourly, and would therefore milk the clock as much as possible to help buy booze and pay the rent.

As a bartender, I've worked at night clubs, dive bars, martini bars, hotel bars, house parties and I was paid a decent hourly, which was essential for those slow and lonely Monday night shifts. But I made good money on the weekends. However, it usually takes time to work your way to those lucrative spots.

As a server, I get paid a little more than $2 an hour plus tips. But the tips are so impossible to calculate because of a myriad of factors -- how many servers are on, how many tables are reserved, how many parties, what's going on at the Arena, what's going on at the Lied, is it snowing, is it raining, is there a sporting event going on, are they splitting the bill, have they worked in the industry, are they from a country unfamiliar with tipping, was the food good, was the food cold, was the drink stiff, was the wine paired well, was the host pretty, was the bathroom out of paper towels, ad nausea -- that budgeting is impossible. I don't auto grat (gratuity of 18 percent of the bill for parties of seven or more) unless it's a sorority party, Mormons, or New Year's Eve, and that's only because I've been burned so badly by these groups.

What most diners don't realize is that it's really a matter of real estate -- and on a busy weekend night one server may be lucky to 'have' four to six tables with a variable of two and four seats. Dinner is generally served between the hours of 5-11. So, this gives the server a set number of data points for the evening (side note, so for the love God don't linger at a table if you're not ordering anything! When a server is forced to refill your water at $2 an hour, it's rude and disrespectful. That's what bars are for). In addition, most servers 'tip out' the host and bartender staff. On a weekend night, I typically tipped out 22 percent, and I never knew if I'd make $30 or $130.

So I know the business fairly well (I even studied hospitality in Vegas for a minute), and as a server I can make your experience remarkable. Ironically, the best tippers are younger college-era students working in the industry.

I think if anything is going to eliminate tipping in the service industry, it'll be some sort of computerized experiment where you sit at a table and punch in what you want. Till then, be conscientious and considerate when you wine and dine.

Wired piece on Snowden, page 5:

By the time he went to work for Booz Allen in the spring of 2013, Snowden was thoroughly disillusioned, yet he had not lost his capacity for shock. One day an intelligence officer told him that TAO—a division of NSA hackers—had attempted in 2012 to remotely install an exploit in one of the core routers at a major Internet service provider in Syria, which was in the midst of a prolonged civil war. This would have given the NSA access to email and other Internet traffic from much of the country. But something went wrong, and the router was bricked instead—rendered totally inoperable. The failure of this router caused Syria to suddenly lose all connection to the Internet—although the public didn't know that the US government was responsible.

So it wasn't the Assad regime after all. Who'd have thought...

Fuck The Poor

shoany says...

While I see where you're coming from, I have a few issues with what you're saying:

1. The organization you're referring to is staffed, has offices and overheads. Assuming it isn't corrupt and skimming and holding multi-million-dollar appreciation nights and galas (and we probably shouldn't assume that it isn't), the money you're giving this organization still gets portioned off quite a bit. Your point about helping on the systemic level is quite valid (provided you are channelling your concern into actually doing so), but I'd look more into local community health centres or the nonprofit down the street, and still, that money isn't guaranteed to reach the person in front of you. Much as a social worker can help him connect to essential services, advocate for fair and affordable housing, counsel him on trauma, etc, he will still need money for a lot of basic needs.

2. You are vastly oversimplifying the needs and situation of every person on the street. That person may actually depend on money from strangers to make rent (being that welfare barely puts a dent in even the lowest affordable housing costs), feed kids, buy food that isn't McDonald's or canned food, get a haircut, or a million other things that everyone needs money for.

3. Even if that person intends to spend some of your money on oxy or crack, it is not in your right to judge that. While addiction can very generally be called "bad", this person may suffer from chronic pain, trauma, mental illnesses, or some combination and short of governments finally realizing that housing and caring for the poor is cheaper than incarcerating them and treating emergency health conditions, self-medicating is the only reasonable way they can continue functioning for another day. This isn't even an unlikely scenario; think how easily someone can go from your (or my) comfy life to homeless, poor and desperate. It isn't always "bad decisions"; you could be a contractor that falls and gets a serious injury, hit by a car, stricken with a mental illness you have no control over, traumatized earlier in life, born into a high-risk environment or social strata, or anything else, and then start sliding from there. You develop an addiction, your income comes to a screeching halt, your loved ones can't or get too tired to support you, bills that were routine become suffocating, and there you are on the street, pain exploding relentlessly in your body/mind, on the other side of the decision, seeing chins turned up and eyes turned away from you and hearing people mutter "Don't give anything to him; he's just gonna use it to get high," to each other.

4. Not a single person in the video (and really, in just about every situation you see on whatever street you're on) speaks to or even looks at the guy.

While I wouldn't expect that everyone gives money to folks on the street (I myself have only done it a few times), it frustrates me to hear people insist that nobody should. "He's just going to use it for drugs/booze" is a presumptuous and ignorant statement and mindset.

One more thing: if you really care about urban poverty and those suffering from it, the biggest thing (IMO) you can do is vote for politicians/parties who openly and strongly support social services and welfare, then hold them to their promises. I don't make a ton of money, but I am happy to pay higher taxes and lose some luxuries if it means people who need help just to get by get it.

Fausticle said:

Exactly, a lot of the time giving money on the street is counter productive. It's best to give it to an organization that can make the most use of that money to help people. The majority of people begging on the street are either mentally ill or addicts and they need more then just a couple of bucks to get another fix they need real help from the community.

Yes, of course prescriptions were required. How else were the physicians gonna get in on the crony racket, diagnosing "debility" from everything from a hang-nail to gout?

It's a "good" thing the good ole American government had other ways of managing those who didn't abide with their prohibtions.

Police, Lies, Videoptape - Unlawful Arrest of Protester

robbersdog49 says...

The police can only require he take a test if there is reasonable suspicion. The policeman was making this up, and so had no right to ask him to take the test.

It's the same as if they turn up at your house without a warrant. They can ask to come in but you have no reason to let them. With the warrant you have no right to stop them. The reasonable suspicion works the same way, without it they have no right to require you to take the test.

This is why it all fell apart for them, they had no reasonable suspicion so they couldn't require him to take the test.

If they came across the owner of a car which had crashed obviously smelling of booze but just walking down the road, as he's the owner of the car and near it when it crashed they'd have a reasonable suspicion that he was driving it drunk. They'd have good reason to require a breath test.

This reasonable suspicion requirement is to stop the police doing precisely what you see in this video. It's a requirement put in place to protect the rights of innocent people, and it seems ultimately in this case it worked.

The police do not have the right to do whatever they want, and they sure as hell shouldn't act like they do.

Again, refusing the roadside test and asking for a more accurate blood test can get you out of a ban or a fine, but the roadside tests aren't accurate enough to be relied upon and so being able to ask for a more accurate test stops innocent people being convicted wrongly.

A lot of people seem to have an issue with stuff like this but in my opinion the protection of the innocent is more important than catching the guilty.

RunRabbitRun said:

And this is retarded. If i'm drunk and run over your family, and get out of the car before the police get there it doesn't mean I can go nerr nerr nerr i'm a pedestrian i'm not driving, nerrr.

You can get yourself out of a ban and many people do by getting out of the roadside test, and hoping the alcohol levels drop before the station test.

It is an offense to refuse to give a sample, the guy in the video could have been charged with it as the suspicion of driving is enough, however it's a charge the police rarely use.

Remembering Some Of the Most Notorious Videosift Shills (History Talk Post)

chingalera says...

copious amounts of booze-Yes, and less and less with aview to healing balm rather than backhand or palm-I do become ornery with predictable, lop-sided scripts:
Always detest the 'ganging-up' on the devout be they Christian or other-Guilty of the same-
Always protect the wiles of the underdogs, enjoy the company of others so sensitive
Have tried to maintain a finger pointed at myself when accusing or implying that others are guilty of same-such, it's called a mirror that reflects the worst in oneself for all to see in themselves.

I'm wrong most of the time but my instincts are keen and I can smell bullshit a mile off before it fucks me from now on. Sorry if I'm hard to manage, the stalwarts should have figured me for an ok guy by now.
