The history of the Cuban Missile Crisis - Matthew A. Jordan

radx says...

The argument of "defensive measures" sounds quite different if you take into account:
1) Operation Mongoose, 2) the history of US-led terror campaigns and regime changes in Central America (Guatemala, anyone?), 3) the killing of Soviet technicians on Cuba by Cuban exiles, armed and trained by the US, 4) the century-long almost pathological need by the US to control Cuba. Not to mention of the Soviets had knowledge of the secret deployment of missiles to Okinawa just months earlier.

Don't make JFK out to be a man of peace. He signed National Security Memorandum No 181 in August of '62, which detailed regime change followed by an invasion of Cuba. He put into place a terror campaign against Cuba to bring them back into line. A terror campaign that was resumed a mere week after the crisis by blowing up a factory, causing the death of 400+ on November 8th.

Also, the offer came from Khrushchev, not the other way around, if I remember correctly. And while the Soviets didn't wage a terror campaign against Turkey or Italy once the outdated Jupiter missiles had been removed, we all know what has been done to Cuba over the following decades.

John Oliver - Refugee Crisis

Spacedog79 says...

You do realise it was Russia and China who were against causing the clusterfuck in Syria in the first place? At least in Iraq we bothered to come up with an excuse to go to war, even if there turned out to be no WMD. In Syria we didn't even bother to do that, we just said Assad is a bad person and sent in mercenaries and lots of guns and called them rebels and freedom fighters and watched the whole place blow up. Assad is such a bad person? Compared to the Saudi's? The Russians are the only ones who have stopped the place become an ISIS state by now.

Bill Maher: Julian Assange Interview

bareboards2 says...

This need for folks to be squeaky clean is, excuse me, childish.

Good lord. Look at all the cliches there are around politics. It's a dirty business. Has been forever.

What HAS been said repeatedly, including in this clip, is that THERE IS NOTHING THERE.

I LOVED seeing asshat WikiLeak McFuckface squirm when Maher asked him to discuss the difference between transparency and privacy.

So many "let the system blow up" people are often fierce about privacy issues -- until it suits them to not care about it.

Those emails had nothing. People being people in private convos between co-workers.

Star Trek Beyond Trailer #3 (2016)

entr0py says...

Looks like that last shot was the end of the movie, they've clearly found a way off the planet, gotten another ship and discovered how to blow up all the space nits at the same time.

Nice of them to condense the movie down to a minute and a half for us.

CRAZY ANT BITE!

newtboy says...

Why didn't he use it to 'stitch' the wound closed afterwards, like they did in Apocalypto? ;-)
We had these in Texas. Somehow, even with years of blowing up the entrance to the nest with fireworks, I never was bitten as a kid. Lucky me.
Before @ant gets too upset, they used the firework paper to rebuild the nest every time, so it wasn't as bad as it sounds.

Safety is Number One Priority with Balloons

nanrod says...

I think it's a function of the pressure of the air already in the balloon relative to the pressure required to add air to the balloon. When you blow up a balloon the first few puffs require a lot of pressure to inflate and then it becomes easier until it approaches maximum size.

Bernie Sanders...The Revolution Has Just Begun

bobknight33 says...

Better to blow up few abortion clinics than to murder 50 Million babies.. But hey who's counting. Hitler would be proud.

Bernie stands for unrealistic ideas. Nothing more.

Income inequality-- If you feel bad about that Take every dollar you make over the 15$/hr living wage and give it to someone.-- You can't -- You won't. You , like me are selfish pricks like everyone else. But you wont mind if it is done by force on you employer.

Free tuition? Bull -- nothing is free in life. If you pay for it It will have more value to you.

Getting big $ out of politics-- Agree but will never happen.. Sounds nice though.

Creating decent jobs. 8 Years of Democrat control and zero happened. You think a socialist can make a difference. .What is a decent job? I never had one. One you like or one that pays you more that you are worth? I think the unicorn would be discovered first.

A Living wage 15$/hr -- I feel that he is cheating people should be 35$/hr What is the right number-- Its what the market will bear.

Climate change this is BS but I'll go along-- Tax people and companies, which pass to consumers -- We are poor enough under the Obama economy ... Trying to get blood from a rock.

Humane Immigration-- Bernie is a son of an immigrant who came here legally. IF you want these illegals taking you son and daughters and your job buy all means vote for Bernie If your that stupid I suppose the illegal is smarter than you.

Family values. The best family value is for the family to stay together where there is 1 provider and the other provided love, support, encouragement anytime of day , not just after 7pm when both parents come home.. Progressive democrat policies has its price and destroyed the family unit. Bernie just wants more PTO.

Reforming wall street--Obama was the biggest giver of money to wall street in history---Under he and the democrats they created Quantitative easing -- This dumped trillions directly into big banks and wall street.. ..

Bernie stands for unrealistic ideas. Nothing more.

Bernie Sanders...The Revolution Has Just Begun

mentality says...

By your logic, a Christian is a Christian, so you are as much of a scumbag as the WBC members or those nutcases who blow up abortion clinics?

Yes Bernie is a socialist, but saying all socialists are the same is about as accurate and as truthful as saying all Christians are the same. So why don't you start judging Bernie by what he actually says.

If you disagree with his actual policies, that's fine. At least then you're making an informed opinion instead of speaking out of ignorance.

The Democratic Socialists of America fully support Bernie.

So why do they fully ideology align themselves with Bernie? A socialist is a socialist.

Ren & Stimpy: Never The Same Face Twice

Payback says...

Our country reeks of trees
Our yaks are really large
And they smell like rotting beef carcasses
And we have to clean up after them
And our saddle sores are the best
We proudly wear womens' clothing
And searing sand blows up our skirts
And the buzzards, they soar overhead
And poisonous snakes will devour us whole
Our bones will bleach in the sun
And we will probably go to HELL
And that is our great reward
For being the roy-oy-al Canadian Kilted Yaksmen

Confessions of a Republican in a 1960's ad

Drachen_Jager says...

Sure she says she's changed, but she was on the board of directors for Wal-Mart. She took many six-figure speaking opportunities for Wall Street, she promoted the disastrous "jail every black man" legislation Bill enacted.

The problem with Washington is that Republicans and Democrats essentially saw eye-to-eye for many years as they both shifted to self-serving "neo-liberal" parties and she's right in the middle of that. That's a big part of the reason politics is blowing up in America right now, there hasn't been a REAL choice in decades. The only difference has been on social issues and even then it's a pretty narrow range of social issues.

As much as she pretends to have outgrown it, she's still the good little Republican girl her parents loved. It's just the politics around her that have shifted to the right.

OK, some of them.

Military will refuse to obey unlawful orders from Pres Trump

bcglorf says...

I think Hayden meant at higher levels of command. Realistically, if an officer tells the soldier directly under them to blow up that building, they follow orders. Whether that building is full of terrorists, or just the school their kids attend wouldn't change that much, as you say.

I think Hayden means that if a President ordered the military to start targeting women and children, the very top generals he gave those orders to would themselves refuse. If the situation were private enough they'd remind the President that it's not their job to do those kind of things and he should probably go talk to the CIA instead...

Mordhaus said:

He might be correct in theory, but realistically they will follow all but the most heinous orders. It is entrenched in them the longer they serve to follow commands and the threat of military prison is there as well. For something like this to happen, it would require 100% agreement and compliance between all levels of the commanding officers on a very controversial decision.

More likely is that the orders would be filtered and interpreted by the actual lower level commanders in a way to make them ineffective. For instance, if Trump ordered a drone strike on illegal immigrants (just an example based on his dislike of them), the drone might encounter mechanical issues or just miss the target. Soldiers, by and large, are great bullshitters. Trust me, if you ever play pen and paper RPGs with them it is fucking hilarious how they work out ways to dodge 'orders'.
