Jed Lewison Documents Fox Hypocrisy Over ABC Special

honkeytonk73 says...

Two party system. Two media system. What do you expect? This 'Democracy' is a Demopublican Plutocratic Kleptocracy. Each party picks their -short list- of candidates that they want in office, and you vote on that short list. Are you *really* choosing the president? Are you *really* choosing individuals for office? In a country of some 300 million +, wouldn't you expect there to be more than a dozen or so individuals wanting to run for the presidential seat. Why are the final candidates always the party big-names? Why are non-mainstream candidates sidelined and not given equal airtime or allowed into the debates?

What at E3 are you most excited about? (Videogames Talk Post)

NetRunner says...

>> ^Farhad2000:
Everything at E3 looked like shit. Bad economic times guarantees formulaic and safe games with sequels making the biggest showing.

In bad economic times, even the criticism becomes formulaic and safe.

The games industry has been all but recession-proof. In fact, up until very recently, the game industry seemed to be gaining momentum as people started staying home and curling up with videogames instead of going out.

The real thing that pushes games to be "formulaic and safe" is the same thing that always happens when there's really only a handful of companies with deep pockets competing with one another: they need to invest so much in individual products just to compete, it's hard to justify making a big bet on an unproven concept.

That said, "formulaic and safe" in the game industry usually means betting on the big name developers and development houses. Sometimes that means a sequel factory, other times it means God of War, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, Brutal Legend, Resistance Fall of Man, and Halo come out, rather than just seeing the same IP getting dusted off year after year (Hey there Mario, Zelda, Metroid!).

That said, usually there's at least one title that gets announced at E3 that surprised me, and this year there was nothing.

As far as original IP from this year, look to things like Brutal Legend, The Last Guardian, Heavy Rain, Dragon Age, and Alan Wake.

If those don't qualify, what is the last game you thought was not formulaic and safe?

Kay One / Bushido - German freestyle during police check

maatc says...

There are quite a few colloquial expressions but I tried my best to translate
(For example "7er alpina" at the end refers to a BMW model)

Not a really good freestyle in my opinion (though it does get a little more entertaining towards the end)
The main reason why this clip got hyped is because the guys getting pulled over are Kay One and Bushido, who are big names in the german rap scene

Anyway, here is the translation of Ekleks text:

Excuse me? (...)

Mickey Rourke Knocks Out Darell Miller (Actual Boxing Match)

Pornstar Belladonna is interviewed by Diane Sawyer

Trancecoach says...

In part 2, she seems to struggle with trying to tell Diane Sawyer how much she really likes being a whore... She thinks it's fun and rewarding and pleasurable and lucrative..

And a big name like Diane Sawyer wouldn't believe that from her.. Even from a star as big as Bella Donna.

Please Explain Rock Band Versus Guitar Hero (Videogames Talk Post)

14087 says...

Guitar Hero 3 and World Tour are Guitar Hero in name only, the original developers of Guitar Hero 1 and 2 (Harmonix) are responsible for the Rock Band games (which is why Guitar Hero is catching up).

Technically the games are roughly equivalent. Unless you plan on buying both, your choice should be based on which group you want curating your music gaming experience: Mega-publisher Activision (they have the money for big names and exclusives), or the Genre originators Harmonix (good musical taste, surprisingly enjoyable singles from independent bands made up of Harmonix employees, warm fuzzy's for supporting the OG's). Take a look at what tracks are already available as downloadable content (DLC) for both games.

Sure, he reviews games no one actually cares about or are weeks old, is oblivious to multiplayer and generally seems to get it wrong some of the time but hell if I can get a couple of laughs from a 5 minute video a week I'm not complaining.

He's reviewed Assassin's Creed, Halo 3 in the past and Fallout 3, Fable 2 and Left 4 Dead recently. Those are big games that alot of people care about.
Also he's not attempting to get anything "right", he's expressing an opinion.

He reviews some big name games, but he also reviews plenty that no one cares about because they already know they're shit just to take the piss. When he does review well received games on the other hand he takes his bloody time, (L4D - 3 weeks late, F3 - 3 weeks late, AC - 3 weeks late ... you get the idea) by which point you'd expect a lot of gamers to have either finished them or be well on their way through them, making 'reviewing' them a wee bit pointless.
By get it wrong, I'm obviously referring to my opinion. I would preface all my comments with 'in my opinion', but that would be incredibly obnoxious not to mention redundant because it should already be readily apparent.

I'm afraid with reaction to videogame reviews some people get a bit too upset over them and I assumed you might be one of them

I don't think his reviews have to coincide with release dates. Many people, myself included, don't buy games on release or certainly can't afford to. I might also be finishing something else. In that context his stuff remains useful as well as entertaining. He's not really competing with anyone else's reviews so he can take his time. My impression is that he actually has to buy these games himself (presumably funded by The Escapist) and isn't tied into the various politics of dealing with publishers like most gaming sites.

From the end trailer I can postulate that Yahtzee has sold out faster that pele and his impotence adds.
I seriously wonder if he calls those people friends.
(on a side note, not that I'm against him selling out, good for him)
In addition co hosting something really kills the idea that he is a jaded sociapath of some description.

He already started and finished writing a PC Gamer column... not news.

Am I the only one who dislikes the horribly loud hard-rock intro/outro sequence of ZPR? Despise might be more apt. I have to be quick on the volume controls while watching these. Perhaps I'll do a narrated slideshow about it...

Zbigniew Brzezinski - The Man Behind Obama

NetRunner says...

Interesting clip. I definitely am not a big fan of Brzezinski, but I think this clip makes a bit too much with the Trilateral Commission, CFR, NAU, NWO stuff, and far too little about how this guy was the architect for arming the Taliban way back when.

As for the statement at the end, saying he's a major part of Obama's campaign, Brzezinski only endorsed Obama a year ago, and has become one of several foreign policy advisers, and doesn't seem to have an elevated status, even there.

I think it will remain to be seen what role he really plays -- I'm seeing it more being a way for Obama to shore up his foreign policy credentials by getting a big name from the Carter administration to be part of his team. I don't see it translating into a cabinet position, should Obama win.

By contrast, I think there's a lot to be said for McCain's foreign policy advisers, who are all kool-aid drinking neocons, and just loooove what Bush has done, and want to do more in Iran.

Right now, the choices are an interventionist who wants to restore America's standing with the world by working together with the international community, or an interventionist that thinks the world can go to hell as long as we force the middle east into submission to western influence.

Good video for trying to encourage people to pick the latter!

Hugh Laurie Laughs at James Liptons Enlish Accent

my15minutes says...

actually, it's surprisingly bad.
and unsurprisingly, very theatrical.

lipton's actually very good at the 'nuts & bolts' of acting. like, learning your fuckin lines every day while working on a soap opera. the essentials. which is why he's a good acting teacher.

accents generally aren't all that essential (though most can do a better british accent than that, lipton! ). plenty of big-name stars who've gone through entire careers, scarcely ever changing their accent. and if they do, they'll just bring in a dialogue coach for that one flick.

and then there's the meryl streeps and the hugh lauries, that can do dozens, so well that locals couldn't tell.

John Farnham - You´re the voice

maatc says...

>> ^BoneyD:
I'm not sure well how he did around the world, but ol' Whispering Jack was anything but a one-hit-wonder in Australia. He was pretty big stuff for decades down here. He did concerts with big names like Tom Jones, and used to show up on TV a lot (I remember him on appearing on the variety show Hey Hey, it's Saturday a lot).
I wouldn't think there would be any household not guilty of owning one of his singles or albums

Interesting. In Germany he is only known for "You´re the voice".
I must admit there are a few "maybe it was two or three hits" videos in my list, but they all certainly have that feeling of "where did they go after that?" to them.
