GeekSquad Fail

PlayhousePals says...

>> ^soulmonarch:

Well, it does have SOMETHING to do with Geek Squad. Primarily because they do not necessarily require any kind of knowledge when hiring a Geek Squad employee. (I worked at a Best Buy for a while between jobs.) They don't ask for an A+ or an MSCE, they don't ask you to pass a basic competency test, nothing.
So, you could very well get some smart computer-savy folks in a Geek Squad. Or you could get total dunces that are only there because management thought they'd look good behind the counter.

LOL ... Looking good behind the counter is certainly NOT a Geek Squad priority at the Best Buy I frequent =oD

A Look at Windows 8 - It's Almost not Terrible

RFlagg says...

I wouldn't mind the changes, but the fact that you can't go back to a Windows 7 style start bar menu on the Desktop is just odd... I am willing to have Metro the default and no real way to boot to Desktop, but Desktop should function they way people are used to it, give them an easy way back to Metro, but leave Desktop functional...

The big problem is most home consumers buy their PC from Best Buy, Wal-Mart or some retail box store like that, and those PCs will all be loaded with Windows 8, so it doesn't matter if Microsoft keep Windows 7 available for businesses and people doing custom builds, most consumers will be stuck with this mess for their desktops and laptops.

About the only thing they seem to be doing right on the desktop/laptop end is finally going with a semi-more-reasonable price structure for the upgrades. $40 per PC... still not as cheap as Apple's $20 upgrade every Mac you have, but a step in the right direction. Had they managed to get ReFS better integrated across the line (able to boot from it, able to use it in removable drives and in consumer level versions... the inability to boot from it and use it in removable drives is perhaps why it isn't in the consumer version) then that would be a thing they have going for it as well.

Metro looks great for touchscreens, although the lack of ability to set where you want to split side by side apps seems odd even for touchscreens.

I'd love to know the sequence of events that ended with him using scissors inside his computer case.

It wasn't an extravagant story; he just didn't want the extra wires hanging down so he cut the unused ones off.

This guy apparently had 3 in a row:
1) He cut electrical wires with a pair of scissors and left the ends exposed.
2) He labeled himself an expert on a newegg product review. This wouldn't have been so bad except...
3) He told everyone about the colossally stupid thing he did in the first place.
Hell, when I do something incredibly stupid I at least have the common sense (and "expertise") to make up a story to cover my ass. And I only tell that story to the people to whom I can't avoid saying anything to all.

I met this guy who edits his I always edit my dumbass anecdotes to start with "I met this guy who...".

Your humor or from the video?

Plain and simple if you can only tell me the difference by checking what's on each sticker and then NOTHING MORE you're doing a BAD JOB.

Yea I generally agree with that, but I don't think there's anything wrong with an employee looking at the specs as long as they can then give a good answer.

If I were working there then I could probably give the guy a good explanation of the differences beyond what it says on the cards, but I wouldn't be able to look at a random laptop and list all of the components from memory.

My original point was that if a customer doesn't know enough about computer equipment to understand the listed specs on something then Newegg probably isn't the best place for them to shop.

If the customer can't read the listed specs himself then he probably won't do much better at an online store.

The point is when you ask someone for advice your expecting them to NOT have to read the specs.

They should have the specs of every laptop they sale memorized? Would that include benchmark numbers and compatibility issues as well?
Edit: Realistically though, if the employee can't glance at the specs for 2 seconds and then answer the question then they shouldn't be working there.

When I went to home depot a few weeks ago I was buying a lawn mower. There was an "Expert" in my isle (Just like in Best Buy if you ask someone who works in the cellphone section to sell you a computer they will say you have to get someone in the computer section).

I asked him if he could tell me the difference between two mores. He proceeded to read to me, verbatim, what was written on the little cards they put in front of boxes on the racks.

When someone comes to me and says "What's the difference between these two" and you have to read off the cards, and then you can't formulate an opinion of your own such as the gentle ginger pictures in this video, it's obvious you have no business selling anything in that department.

If he has to read the specs that intently then he obviously is going to look at you and say "Well this one has more gigabytes then the other" Wow great fucking insight Sherlock like I couldn't figure that out by myself when I READ THE STICKER. Like these "sales people" posses some sort of Arcane Knowledge about the English Language that enables them to find some sort of Davinci Code within the Best Buy Sticker.

Plain and simple if you can only tell me the difference by checking what's on each sticker and then NOTHING MORE you're doing a BAD JOB.
