10 Songs You've Heard and Don't Know the Name

MilkmanDan says...

A few of those didn't actually ring a bell in terms of having heard them before, and I knew the names of a few that I had heard:

(spoilers, I guess?)
1. I instantly knew that was the William Tell Overture, I would think a lot of people know that one?

2. Know the song, but didn't know the title without seeing it. But I'm sure that I've heard the title (Entry of the Gladiators) before.

3. Didn't know the song (or the title -- Liechtensteiner Polka).

4. Know the song, knew it was Strauss, didn't know it was "Fruhlingsstimmen". Gesundheit. As an aside, the stare plus the eyebrow action in this one is hilariously well-suited to the song.

5. Knew a variant of the song, didn't know it was "The British Grenadiers". Pretty sure I first heard this one as music in the old-school NES game "Pirates" by Sid Meier.

6. Knew the song, knew it was Chopin's "Piano Sonata No. 2 Op. 35", also know that it is commonly referred to as "Marche Funebre" (although that title can be applied to other songs also). Dude also gets a lot of mileage out of the creepy stare at the camera on this one.

7. Don't think I've ever heard this one, didn't know the title (A Dog's Life).

8. Knew the song, knew it was by Strauss, didn't know the title (An Der Scthonen Blauen Donau).

9. Knew the song, knew it was the "Chicken Dance". I'd think that anyone that's ever been to a wedding pretty much has to know this one -- but maybe that's just a midwest US thing?

10. Eventually recognized the song, but not until he got a bit into it. Didn't know the title (Colonel Bogey March). Still think it should 'properly' be titled "Lisa, her teeth are big and green. Lisa, she smells like gasoline."

Reality Check: How Prevalent is the Global Child Sex Trade

newtboy says...

That should be a tip off that it's misleading at best...especially when you actually bother to look at the statistics and notice a total of around 115 stranger abductions nationally per year, most of which are recovered and few sold into sex slavery. FBI shows a total of <34000 still missing kids under 18 (not just from this year) do you really believe 10000 per year get snatched and sold?!
When you see outrageous, unbelievable claims like this that support your narrative, why don't alarm bells ever go off?

That is a form of sickness....and you've got it bad, booboo.

At the 1:23 mark he indicates approx 10,000 kids or about 200 kids per state.

If 200 kids go missing every year from every state why arn't the alarm bells going off?

This is so sick.

CNN: Guns In Japan

jwray says...

@SDGundamX you're confusing psychopathy with insanity. Lots of psychopaths are perfectly sane. Being a psychopath vastly increases the likelihood of committing murder. And it's heritable. And it's a continuum. But it's rare enough to be a relatively minor cause of murder rates. In place of "genes for psychopathy" I should have said "genes for anything that predisposes one to commit murder".

First degree murder is less than 10% of all murder. Most murders are spur of the moment. Having a higher IQ correlates with doing better on the marshmellow test and having greater impulse control to avoid spur of the moment destructive behavior. IQ is a vastly better predictor of criminality than parental SES ( http://akarlin.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/bell-curve-crime-iq.jpg ) Japanese have 7 points higher average IQ than the US. IQ is >50% heritable.

Unreal Engine's Human CGI is So Real it's Unreal

ChaosEngine says...

Yeah, the real-time aspect of it is insanely good, although I'd still like to know how much of the rendering budget it takes up, i.e. is this usable in a game or just a research project at the moment?

What do you mean by "only one modifier is being applied"? Which is my other criticism of the video; a voiceover explaining the tech would have been more interesting than the music.

I don't believe that "multiple modifiers" would make this look better, for the simple reason that if you're demoing a technology like this, you end with ALL the bells and whistles to make it look as good as possible.

ravioli said:

The reason it doesn't look quite there is because only one modifier is applied at a time, for the purpose of the demo. You must imagine the possibilities if multiple modifiers are put in altogether. Also, the rendering is done in real-time, so this is in itself pretty amazing.

ANTIFA Returns To Berkeley

newtboy says...

Really? Ok, point out the antifa in that clip then. Please, show me the crazed lefty pointing his gun and firing at the peaceful Nazis and KKK, name the second and quadrant of the video frame...or any video of that. I'll gladly retract if you can. Waiting with bells on. ;-)

Edit: how sad, Bob. Watching on the bigger screen, I was able to find ONE masked man on the anti Nazi side....why couldn't you?

B-17 Bomber And Crew Facts/Statistics

MilkmanDan says...

I'd wager that a reasonable percentage of the lucky guys that survived a full tour of duty wouldn't agree with the assessment of flak jackets being essentially "unstylish 40 pound vests".

Also, the video makes it sound like the success rate of coming back from a single mission was 25-33%. I think those numbers are more accurate for the rate of completing a full tour of 25 missions (before being rotated out). The number I recall is about a 4% loss rate on a single mission:
100%-4% = 96%
.96^25 = 36%

If the chances of coming back from a single mission were 33%:
.33^25 = (pretty much zero).

I wouldn't want to chance my life on a roll of the dice where I die unless I roll a 5 or a 6, but that's pretty close to accurate...

Those nitpicks aside, still a great video that gets the newer generations that are too young to either have a grandfather from the war or to have watched Memphis Belle a bit of a sense of what those guys went through.
