Dag, I saw them live, with our common (and totally missing) friend in Vegas.... 25 years ago!! The 70's were over, and Ann had balooned up by then. They needed four stage hands with tether lines to keep her neutrally bouyant in the hot stage air.

Hmm, why not just use the string then, if it's the "safety line"? Correct me if I'm wrong but this looks like a high-flying baloon with a bunch of string. I had high hopes for LiftPort, but after all these years, it's dissapointing that this looks like a high school science fair project.

Hmm didnt seem so, seemed obvious that the farther they were, the longer they took. The collimation/focus of the laser is not perfect and makes a difference (for this type of application) over mere feet. Also, the scattering effects of the opium smoke in the room would be dramatically more for the farthest baloon than the nearest.
