Passenger - Travelling Alone

Zawash says...

australian man
scandinavian tan
kicking stones round a square
he sat for a while
and carved out a smile
as if someone would care

said I’m a long way from the gold coast
furthest I’ve ever known
oh and this just ain’t my home
it was my wife’s idea
but she’s no longer here
she left me travelling alone

I’ve never heard silence
ring out like a bell
I’ve never heard silence
like last night in my expensive hotel
well I’m loving a shadow
and trying to catch the rain
but I never heard silence
'til I heard it today

well she walked out of the hotel
I could still smell the smoke
of a burning heart left inside
she said men are all arseholes
and life’s a bad joke
she laughed and started to cry

see ten years with this man
and a lifetime of plans
oh and I loved him to his bones
but now I’ve lines on my skin
and he’s traded me in
and left me travelling alone

well I never felt silence
hit me like a train
I never felt silence
like blood course through my veins
well I’m loving a shadow
and trying to catch the rain
I never heard silence
'til I heard it today
I never felt silence
'til I felt it today

Colbert interviews Anita Sarkeesian

Asmo says...

I think she's opportunistic and more interested in pumping up her profile than legitimately advancing feminism.

She picked the one media that was guaranteed to get a worldwide furor (the 'establishment' loves to hate vid games, but movies/books/magazines or heaven forfend rap bloody music, meh, yesterdays news) by lambasting mostly male, mostly young guys for playing games where, frequently, women fulfill the same stereotypical roles they do everywhere else in our culture...

The same demographic that is most likely to, clad in the armour of anonymity and mounted on the soapbox of the internet, to say the most horrible and abominable things (things they would never dare say to the face of an actual female)...

She's a troll and she barely needed to bait to get the desired reaction... Ironically, she's also patronising as hell because us guys are obviously too fucking stupid to understand that women are still objectified... /eyeroll

But the internet will keep giving her exactly what she wants (and needs) to stay relevant. Like any good troll, they only go away if you actually ignore them, and that ain't going to happen.

ps. For the record, I have no skin in the GG bs either way, the whole thing is a bad joke and completely abrogated so idiots on either side of the line can insult and attack each other.

I've been a fan of Sarkeesian for awhile and maybe someone can enlighten me. It blows me away that there is that much opposition to her views... She's not really nitpicking seems to me, the tropes she brings up are pretty obvious and irrefutable. I don't buy it that men dominate the gaming and are willing to shoot schools up rather than concede the patriarchy. Who/where are these guys and what is their real opposition?

I try to watch opposition videos, but the ones I bothered with all go ad hominem immediately like rabid dogs and pretty much stay there. What gives?

I also don't like this interview - she's got so much more to say and she's not solely a gamer feminist.

Man Locked In Hot Car To Prove Babies Are Weak

newtboy says...

Yep, he needed a thermometer (because fat boy there probably sweats like that in 75 deg temperatures) and a timer/sundial (because he's an obvious liar too and can't be trusted).
I agree, this would have been good if it ended with the point being proven because he passed out from heat stroke/dehydration, as it sits it's just a stupid, bad joke being driven into the ground.
Judging from the shadows outside, it probably was about 15 min tops....also judging from the condensation on the window. It was certainly not anywhere near 3 hours. I doubt he needed to mist himself down, I bet he sweats like that at the air conditioned movie theater from the exertion of lifting his big gulp. What an ass.

Lame. I get that it's a parody, but still...

Would have made the point better if he'd had a thermometer to reference.

Would have made the video excellent if he'd had a heart attack and the video was posted by a sad relative.

All in all, I seriously doubt he was in there for 3 hours. Probably just got out, sprayed himself down with a mister, and did the whole thing in 15 minutes, tops.

Who's weak now, bitch!?

Rape in Comedy: Why it can be an exception (Femme Talk Post)

gwiz665 says...

You can make jokes about anything, but some jokes just fall flat. Happens to everyone. Most everyone knows that "wouldn't it be funny if you were raped by like 5 guys right now" is a bad joke, but on the spot, anyone could make a bad joke when heckled.

Let's just get back to killing the jews and getting women back in the kitchen and move on.

Rape in Comedy: Why it can be an exception (Femme Talk Post)

ChaosEngine says...

My take on the subject is simple: is it funny?

That's the end of it where comedy is concerned. Regardless of what was said, if the content, delivery and context all add up to humour, then by definition it's not offensive to me.

As I've made clear, I think Tosh is to comedy what an accounting manual is to literature. I didn't find Toshs joke funny, but at the same time, I don't believe there was malice in it. I think it was just a bad joke.

I'm also uncertain as to what "rape culture" is. On the one hand, the kind of vitriol that gets spewed on XBox Live disgusts me, and is one of the reasons I can't be bothered with consoles. On the other hand, I though the controversy over Penny Arcades Sixth Slave comic was retarded.

Santorum: I Don't Believe in Separation of Church and State

LukinStone says...

>> ^lantern53:

Some of you people must get a lot of exercise jumping to conclusions.
Anyway...Santorum will not be 'legislating', as this is what the legislature does.
Also, I did not say sex outside marriage was wrong or evil, did I? You made that assumption.
My point was that sex outside of marriage causes a lot of problems, more than sex within marriage.
You can go on believing whatever you want (see, I'm not forcing my beliefs on you, am I?) but the end result will teach you what you need to know.
I'm a big believer in experience, myself.

lantern53, we've had some good times, but this will have to be my last post on the subject. Unless you make a worthwhile argument.

Point by point:

"Some of you people must get a lot of exercise jumping to conclusions."

Bad joke, not factually off base, but minus one for style.

"Anyway...Santorum will not be 'legislating', as this is what the legislature does."

The definition of legislate: 'to perform the function of legislation; specifically: to make or enact laws' or 'to mandate, establish or regulate by or as if by legislation'

So, are you suggesting that the president only executes? The Supreme court only judges? I'm not calling you stupid, but your attempt to use language to cover your argument is. I think it's completely valid to use the word "legislate" to describe some of what the president does, as he has an effect on laws being made, even outside utilizing the veto. Besides, presidential contenders are often asked about legislation they would support. I wouldn’t think using this word would confuse anyone, unless they hadn't yet taken eighth grade American history.

"Also, I did not say sex outside marriage was wrong or evil, did I? You made that assumption."

Yeah, we're responding to what you wrote. See, when adults write things, we can tell things due to context and implication. It's not really an unfounded assumption on my part to infer that you were preaching the evils of premarital sex. This discussion is about a video concerning Santorum's views. You defended him. So, we'll assume you think he has valid ideas.

"My point was that sex outside of marriage causes a lot of problems, more than sex within marriage."

Okay, fine. Let's just ignore everything else. Here's your point. Same as last time, you are wrong. We can't define social problems like this and rate them from better to worse. Have you seen "Dead Poet's Society"? Remember when Robin Williams rips the intro out of their Literature textbook? He does that because the text was attempting to rate something as subjective as art. Here you're doing the same thing as that chart attempted in that movie, saying one subjective human experience is better than another. I bet you could come up with a handy chart too. Instead of a Literature text book, you're invoking religion or tradition as the authority when making such a claim. Either way, its BS.

"You can go on believing whatever you want (see, I'm not forcing my beliefs on you, am I?) but the end result will teach you what you need to know."

Thank you, I will. Notice, I made this same point in my last post. I interpret the 'but in the end' bit as you saying: Just sleep around outside of marriage and you'll suffer, just wait.

"I'm a big believer in experience, myself."

Really? You don't seem to value experience if you think never having sex outside of marriage is the ideal path for all Americans. Some people would consider that inexperience. I consider it sad.

Chris Christie Does Something Right

xxovercastxx says...

This sounds like I'm setting up a bad joke, but I'm not...

Most of the gas stations in my home and surrounding towns were closed for several days following 9/11. Why? Because they were owned by Arabs and Indians who had been arrested for, as far as we ever heard, being Arab and Indian. Apparently brown=suspicious.

I don't know if any of them dealt with Sohail Mohammed at that time, but these are the kinds of incidents referred to in the video.

THE NEW *PLANKING*!?

Of course - with all-caps - I see you feel quite strongly about this.

NOT FUNNY

There was an old commercial, and we're talking like 10+ years ago, I forget what it was for but there was like a guy on stage telling bad jokes to a completely dead audience and you just hear 1 guy yell out "NOT FUNNY". This always sticks with me.

Mostly I just hate Shane Dawson, found nothing in this funny, and think the whole fad of planking is incredibly lame, unoriginal, and old.
