It's official... Freak shows are officially a talent...

Tingles says...

The backstage guy and his reactions were distracting, annoying and not funny. I do not need a visual and auditory "play-by-play" to understand what I should be feeling and how I should be reacting during what they decide to show us of the act. That, however, is a critique of the show and not this sift (which I consider being that of the act, which was f*ckin awesome).

Some of the best movies ever made - Compilation

Lawdeedaw says...

I have never seen any of these movies (I did see The Fly one...) but I would say, if I did, imo, Green Mile was good. But I agree, Boons and Sin City sucked... and Req of a Dream... reminds me of my mother too much...

And where was As Good As It Get's and Kickass?

Upon seeing this comment referencing the one bad movie he could find in his opinion, I had to start writing a comment about it.
Seriously a list of aroung 50 movies that are clearly top-notch with some exceptions and you pick out 1, name it and declare this sift crap? And for that matter the taste of another person entirely? Well if that doesn't qualify for a severe case of douchbaggery, I don't know what else.
>> ^shuac:
Upon seeing The Boondock Saints, I had to stop. This person's taste is in his ass.

Don't misunderstand, Lux. This comp is filled with crap. I was just communicating (quite clearly, I thought) at what point I stopped watching. Here's the full list:
The Green Mile - ponderous, fantasy bullshit which makes it not for me.
Braveheart - far too many huge, huge liberties taken with historical fact. Ergo, not for me.
Sin City - all style, threadbare substance: not for me.
The Boondock Saints - a misfire from start to finish by a fevered ego.
Snatch - meh, simulacrum of the year in a series of similar flicks, not for me.
It's a Wonderful Life - jesus, give me a break, popular does not equal great.
Forrest Gump - gonna catch hell for this one but I really didn't like it. Too hokey. Not my taste.
The worst thing about this comp is the sugary-inspirational music pervading each clip in the background. If these scenes are so very choice they probably don't need such auditory support, n'est ce pas? The music made it so much worse.
So I'll gladly accept my role as a practitioner of douchebaggery, just so we're all clear about what it's not for.

Obama's Hypnotism Techniques Revealed

shinyblurry says...

Well, I've seen people fall into hypnosis fairly easily just with NLP..but no its not the most effective technique there is..

You would think it would be obvious to the fanatics that Obama has failed on every level..America has rarely been in a worse position and its not getting any better..Christians figured it out when Obama was playing basketball instead of going to church the sunday after he was elected. Or when he tried to remove the manger display..or when he dissed the sermon on the mount..or a million other things.

>> ^quantumushroom:
Shiny, you're correct that His Earness uses NLP, and that savvier politicians all use similar techniques. NLP is effective, but not nearly as potent as its promoters claim.
By now Obama & Friends' disastrous performance on all fronts should have awakened all but the staunchest of his True Believers. $4 gasoline and 22% real unemployment aren't auditory illusions.
>> ^shinyblurry:
The AAPS is non partisan and quoting from the liberally biased wikipedia doesn't help your case. I really don't care about politics. The techniques described in this video are real..I noticed the brainwashing going on and I actually supported Obama initially. Don't attack my video because you creamed your pants and screamed yes we can. NLP is very real and politicians use it all the time.

Jeff Hawkins on Artificial Intelligence

MilkmanDan says...

Basing the algorithms and overall system organization on brain biology seems very cool to me, particularly in light of what he says about the cortex being essentially uniform across its surface.

Think about what we see human brains doing under exceptional circumstances. Someone who is born blind can develop "superhuman" ability to process auditory information and use it in ways that average people scarcely believe possible. Autistic people often have obsessions with some particular system or activity, which can turn into savant-like proficiency in it.

So much of what our brains process is linked to rather mundane human survival and daily life, but if we could make an artificial intelligence like this that takes input only from a very narrow area of interest and focus, perhaps it would eventually display savant-like proficiency in processing, understanding, and predicting that particular field of input.

Very cool!

Join The Ron Paul Youth; Help Undermine Your New President!

lestat_B says...

Ron Paul is an active youth organizer and deserves to be in the limelight of presidency. Keep things up in the good work. The Bernanke testimony on the Federal Reserve and its role in the current state of economic affairs was hotly awaited, and anyone that knows anything about him knows that Ron Paul was waiting in the wings. The Fed and its chairman are the favorite targets of the Texan libertarian, and he pulled no punches in letting Bernanke know he wants him out of business, and running for payday loans if necessary. The Representative known as Dr. No grilled Bernanke about the fed's activities, disclosures, and interaction with the International Monetary Fund. Ron Paul is sponsor of a bill which would grant auditory power to Congress over the Federal Reserve.

Derren Brown - Russian Scam (guy gives away his wallet and keys)

redyellowblue says...

Lets agree that some people will fall for this and some won't. Remember the video on here about the 2 guys that swap behind a counter and most people don't even catch on, But one girl did. They concluded that some people might not be paying attention, and others are. This video has much more manipulation going on I think because it's not just visual, its auditory, and physical confusion as well. If you really aren't paying attention to what you are doing, or your logic center of the brain don't have a huge boner you'll hand over your wallet. Some people with incredible street smarts will immediately be like "The Fuck I'm giving you my wallet!"

"auditory pareidolia".

But if it's Satan that got rid of George Bush Jr, then "Thanks indeed, Satan!"

In reply to this comment by RadHazG:
anyone know the name of the... "effect" that causes the human mind to "hear" a particular phrase or word if the sound is at least close to it, and they are told ahead of time what it is they are supposed to hear? I've seen this same bull pulled with animals "talking" and I'm never very impressed. Naturally won't stop the right wing nut jobs from using it if they can get away with it. Hell, Fox already pulls blatant outright lies all the time, why not this.

The Gossip - Heavy Cross

Stormsinger says...

Wow! That girl is just so amazing. And I have to say, I believe this is the best I've heard from the band (they've never quite seemed up to Beth's speed, IMO).

That said, she definitely leaves me with mixed feelings. From a purely auditory standpoint, she deserves all the success in the world, but like it or not, the real world won't let that be the only criteria (maybe not even the biggest). It's not so much that she's fat (although that's a definite strike against her chances of commercial success), as that in so many of their performances, she seems to go out of her way to be...the only word I can come up with is "repulsive". It's almost like she's trying hard to sabotage any hope of real commercial success. Maybe she is...or maybe I'm reading too much into a mindset I just don't share (punk attitudes, fashions, body mods and ink have never been appealing to me).

But lordy, that lady can sing.

anti-psychotic meds prescribed for children

marijuana looking better everyday

Yeah, bad idea.

I work in a psych group home, out of ten clients I have 8 that have developed symptoms due to long term illegal substance abuse.

I work with all the drugs mentioned, along with more damaging medications such as depakote, clozapine, and haldol. Believe me when I say that these meds can cause some major damage to an adult much less a child, and that is with on label medication.

There is a terrible flip side to my argument though. These meds can do harm, but they can also do a lot of good. The problem comes when a client takes a down turn. I had a client that was ready to move into her own home, was an elderly woman who was unsteady on her feet. She had a pretty bad fall that lead to a temporary hospitalization. During her hospitalization her family physician claimed the problem was due to overmedication. Over two week off her meds the client became paranoid and was exhibiting severe auditory halucinations. Even when she was placed back on the meds that had balanced her she didn't recover. The damage had already been done.

If I had my PHD, it would be a last resort for me to prescribe any psych meds to a patient initially, because I know that it will be a steady increase of medication to keep that patient funtional, until finally they are on depakote or clozapine and the meds start causing kidney damage.

Scared to sleep

From the link that blankfist posted above:

Cataplexy in severe cases can cause vital signs to be hard to detect without a continuous auditory pulse oximeter. As an anecdotal example, one June Burchell, a sufferer of severe Cataplexy, has been pronounced dead three times.
