Around Cape Horn (1929)
I've actually sailed around Cape Horn on a tall ship, and am a full member of the International Association of Cape Horners (IACH). She was SV Tenacious, and it was Auckland, NZ to Port Stanley, Falkland Islands. Thankfully, we timed it well and got VERY lucky with the weather and had a clear rounding. We did have a force 11 (just short of a category 1 hurricane) one memorable night somewhere east of Point Nemo, but for the most part it was a pretty smooth passage. Of course I got the tattoo (full rigged ship) on my right upper arm.
Cheese
Youtube says Glenfield night market, Auckland, New Zealand.
Safe trip to the foody conquistadores!
Foo Fighters Close Out Lollapalooza During Massive Rainstorm
Dude's a goddamn legend. After the Christchurch earthquakes, they played a fund-raising gig in Auckland and donated all the proceeds to earthquake charities.
Then when they came back to Christchurch last year, he told the crowd that they would come back and play a free show.
Dave Grohl is Fucking Awesome.
Goddamn how does anyone not love this guy?
Samantha Bee on Orlando - Again? Again.
Yowza! That wasn't MY experience landing in Auckland from Australia during Little Feat's April 2001 tour. They pulled out ALL the stops from dogs to a selected body search [one of the techs was detained because his glasses case smelled of marijuana!] The St. James Theater and the people we met there were delightful however and the country is absolutely stunning. I'd go back in a heartbeat [after fumigating my clothes and belongings of course] =o)
Landing in auckland i got "ayyy bro, did you see the (rugby) game ? We smashed 'em!".
I live in NZ. Its fucking awesome.

you should. True story, I flew from San fran to Auckland. In san fran i had my bags searched, my hands swabbed by guys with guns for drugs, a full body scan and shitty looks off security guards. Landing in auckland i got "ayyy bro, did you see the (rugby) game ? We smashed 'em!".

I've not been to NZ
This is why we fly...
The only times that I've been to NZ is a transit stop in Auckland. I really must make it out of the airport next time

Hey there!
I hope that the truly bizarre welcome you got to the sift doesn't put you off, it's a great place for discussion.
I'm from way down south of Oz in Melbourne, but I've been to Byron Bay for a wedding, and it's a lovely place.

HI there, thought I'd introduce myself. It's my first week anniversary sifting here ... I see you are from Australia. I had a chance to visit during a whirlwind tour back in 2001 [My friends were headlining the Byron Bay Blues Festival that year, so I got to tag along] ... didn't get to spend NEARLY enough time in your country, but was impressed with how beautiful it is and how GREAT the people we met are. I hope I can go back some day, it was absolutely one of the most memorable trips I've ever embarked on, HoyHoy
Thanks! It was a bizarre introduction to the site, but hey, who doesn't like a bit of drama [when it's warranted that is]. I really enjoy it here [now] =oD
The band played the Mercury Lounge in Melbourne and the Metro in Sydney before popping over the Auckland for a show at the St. James Theater. It went by so fast! I really wish we'd had longer than ten days down under. My favorite little town was Nimbin in NSW ... my kind of people!

See how it spins in the opposite direction from the ones in North America?

Snow on Cuba Mall in central Wellington
"The storm had also brought snow in places that don't usually see it, including Wellington and Auckland where snow hasn't fallen in more than 30 years."
Truth About Transitional Species Fossils
Great overview, but it would have been nice if there was more focus on the actual transitional fossils rather than arguing against the creationists. Good advice on the bugs btw @bamdrew - I used to collect them when I was a kid, and remember going to the Auckland museum (in New Zealand) and seeing the various bug collections, it really blew me away, so much variety, but still so many similarities.

Chicago's Sears Tower Unveils 'Glass Balconies'
The Sky Tower in Auckland has something like this. I was crapping my pants so hard that I had to crawl on the floor and slowly edge myself to the glass portion to see. People thought I was strange...
