Should gay people be allowed to marry?

FlowersInHisHair says...

Take some of your own advice - just answer the simple question. What are you being asked to capitulate? What are you being asked to give up? Your right to be an arsehole to gay people? Nobody's asking you to give that up. Be as much of an arsehole as you like. We can all see it plain as day. But gay people can get married. That's the quid pro quo of your freedom to be an arsehole.

bobknight33 said:

Instead of you BS just answer the simple question.

Why should any society capitulate for such an insignificant demographic group?

Gays make up less then 4% of population.

And for gay marriage the % is even less than 1% The question really becomes Why should 1% demographic force the 99% to change?

Passenger - Travelling Alone

Zawash says...

australian man
scandinavian tan
kicking stones round a square
he sat for a while
and carved out a smile
as if someone would care

said I’m a long way from the gold coast
furthest I’ve ever known
oh and this just ain’t my home
it was my wife’s idea
but she’s no longer here
she left me travelling alone

I’ve never heard silence
ring out like a bell
I’ve never heard silence
like last night in my expensive hotel
well I’m loving a shadow
and trying to catch the rain
but I never heard silence
'til I heard it today

well she walked out of the hotel
I could still smell the smoke
of a burning heart left inside
she said men are all arseholes
and life’s a bad joke
she laughed and started to cry

see ten years with this man
and a lifetime of plans
oh and I loved him to his bones
but now I’ve lines on my skin
and he’s traded me in
and left me travelling alone

well I never felt silence
hit me like a train
I never felt silence
like blood course through my veins
well I’m loving a shadow
and trying to catch the rain
I never heard silence
'til I heard it today
I never felt silence
'til I felt it today

10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman

dannym3141 says...

Harassment is a bad thing, but I feel very sorry for anyone that does not engage in general pleasantness, and finds phrases like "how are you?" and "nice day!" to be a form of harassment. Worst still, to chastise and publicly present them as harassers on youtube .. what sort of lowlife do you have to be to do that? I don't care how many actual harassers you caught, that is not an acceptable method so put the net away and get the fishing rod out.

I say things like hello, nice day.. And if i'm in a queue and i think of something to say that i think someone might find funny or help someone out, i'll say it. I don't expect a reply, but if there's a fun person around then it might pass the time better. I asked someone of the female persuasion at my pool the other week if they were looking for the sauna (slightly hidden away) because i heard her talking to what i assume was her husband about the sauna. I do that for old men, old ladies, fat blokes, skinny women; all sorts.. i offer men and women help out of the jacuzzi if they need it. Her reaction was to say "No..... WHY?" very pointedly.

Well you know what? Fuck her - i did something nice and now she's the one that's being rude to others. I cannot fucking stand the high and mighty attitude of these people, as though they have never been guilty of accidentally doing something other people didn't want them to do. As though they have an inbuilt capability to read the motive of other people. Obviously i offered to explain the location of the sauna because i wanted to have sex with her in it (yeah, sex in a disgusting public sweat box & burnt genitals, my favourite), god forbid someone actually be nice to someone else. I felt like being rude back, but that'd make me worse than her.

There is a very fine line between being an activist against harassment, and being an unhinged arsehole who goes around over reacting and getting the wrong end of the stick and hurting people who were showing genuine honesty. I'm so sorry if you've been harassed in the past, but you don't see victims of domestic abuse blaming everyone that looks/talks at them funny in the street for all the pain they've suffered - which is substantially more painful and personality-warping than the average activist blogger jumping on the "trigger-warning" bangwagon.

Harassment exists and this blanket of "harassment" that these videos engender for all sorts of shit is distracting us from that issue, and to some degree turning people against the issue..... I mean, if i get unfairly treated like a scumbag for years by "mostly" women who assume i'm harassing them, do i get license to make videos about it and complain about women as a whole, judging every action of every woman to be one of harassment because of my own insecurities? That's why these kind of videos are so poorly received @EMPIRE.. the majority of the content is the videographer sneering at people for being pleasant and exchanging niceties, why should people laud that kind of behaviour? I expect that behaviour to be discouraged by women as well and i'd forgive them for taking more notice of the fewer examples of harassment than i did, because opinions are a bit selfish by nature.

And i didn't even question the validity of the supporting cast..... I'm sure Rob Bliss (OF ROB BLISS CREATIVE DOT COM EVERYBODY FAVOURITE AND LIKE PLS) would have no desire to help make this video more interesting! I quote his own philosophy here from his website, he believes in "giving people the content that they want." Interestingly worded remit... Why does no one ever question the source if it's a "reality" video? The guy practically states in his "approach" section that he aims to pander to people, he doesn't want to challenge viewer opinion...

Walloftext, sorry, but i don't like the sentiment of this video, and i will not let people in the comments tell me that i am a bad person for doing so - these are my reasons.

Calvary Trailer

ChaosEngine says...

Went to see it last night and I'm still mulling over what I think about it. It's undoubtedly a great movie, I'm just not sure that I like it.

I mean, the script is phenomenal, it's beautifully shot and Gleeson is amazing in it.

But there were a couple of things that just didn't sit right. Chris O'Dowd really can't do drama and Dylan Moran doing "Bernard Black becomes obscenely wealthy and turns into an arsehole" felt completely out of place. And I am absolutely mystified as to who told Aiden Gillen (the doctor) that accent was a good idea. It sounds like a parody.

In some ways, it felt like some kind of commentary on post-catholic Ireland. I haven't been home much in the last 10 years, but I don't remember that much open depravity in small town Ireland.

But still, I think its merits outweigh its faults, and the fact that I'm still thinking about it can only be a good thing.

John Oliver's bringing down of the FCC's website

I am conflicted. On one hand, John Oliver is awesome.

On the other hand, everyone in this video who's not John Oliver is a festering sore on the arsehole of humanity.

Fuck TMZ and the vapid, celebrity worshiping excuse for a culture they promote.

Neil deGrasse Tyson schooling ignorant climate fools

harlequinn says...

If that's what he meant then that would be a better comparison (but I still think it is just not the best comparison because of what I wrote).

Unfortunately we're all arseholes one way or another.

I think that there does not even need to be a mention of adverse climate change (anthropogenic or not) for us to be doing the right thing by the current environment and our future environment.

robbersdog49 said:

I think the parallel with gravity is that although the exact cause is debatable, the effect isn't.

If gravity were to be discussed like climate change is then we'd have people arguing about whether or not a ball will fall downwards if dropped, not about whether a graviton is the cause. The right would be arguing that the 'scientists' only observe the ball going down because they're throwing it down.

We're living under a cliff and rocks are starting to fall down on us with alarming regularity, far more often than they used to. We should be building shelters to hide from them or moving away, or strengthening the cliff to stop more rocks from falling but we aren't because we don't know if the graviton exists or not.

I just don't understand the controversy. The earth is warming, and it's going to have a catastrophic effect on a lot of the life on the planet, including us. We could potentially do something about it, or at the very least try to do something about it. But instead there's all this fighting and bitterness.

I'd resign myself to the fact that the human race are a bunch of fucking idiots and we'll get what we deserve but six months ago my wife gave birth to our first child. Every time I look at him I think about the world we're going to leave for him and his kids and realise what a bunch of arseholes we're being. I would love to know what catastrophic things the deniers think will happen if we do try to do something about climate change. What could be worse?

I don't feel gravity is ever a good comparison because gravity always points out the opposite of anyone trying to say something is settled.

I'm sure you know this, but for those that don't.

When the Newtonian model of gravity was postulated it answered some unexplained phenomena. Even though it was mainly right, it wasn't totally right.

Along comes Einstein and he proposes a couple of neat new hypothesis that when verified answered some of the shortcomings people had found after a while in Newton's hypothesis.

We moved a little closer to the truth.

At this point in time we haven't actually observed a graviton. It remains elusive. And more to the point, our model (theory if you like) of gravity may change and things like the graviton may not exist at all.

In summary, science points to what is the most correct explanation of what we observe at a given point in time. It is rarely settled and almost never "right" or "true", just "more right" or "more true" than what has passed before.

Tailgating is bad, okay!

The dickhead in the Peugeot is entirely, 100% at fault. I don't give two shits if some arsehole is tailgating you. Here's how you deal with it: change lanes and let the idiot pass you. You don't fucking stop on a highway like that to "teach someone a lesson". What a fucking tool

Ricky Gervais' Guilty Pleasures

alien_concept says...

Ok, well I don't think I would be able to convince you otherwise. He's quite the love him or hate him type and he certainly seems to revel in playing this arsehole, up himself character, almost begging for people to take him that way. I think beneath that there is a lot more going on. I could be wrong, but who cares anyway

Fairbs said:

What I know of him, incredible intellect seems like a long shot, but it's arguable so agree to disagree on that point. What I don't like about him is that he's always taking shots at people which makes him seem insecure. It's not just one or two people, it's everyone. And the second thing that drives me nuts about him and is more to the point of my original comment can be seen at 2:15. He's laughing hysterically at a joke that is barely funny and it's not him having a laugh with a crowd he's entertaining, it's a laugh to make himself feel that he's clever and funny. I don't think he is.

Street Harassment Of Women In New York - An Art Project

ChaosEngine says...

Not sure how that's relevant here. This video addresses the harassment of women BY MEN.

Saying that men are not relevant to the conversation is like trying to discuss crime without considering why the reasons behind it.

Some of the reasons are just that some criminals are arseholes, but sometimes there are cultural or societal reasons. This isn't trying to justify the behaviours, but trying to understand them so we can stop them.

Anyway that comic is just awful. We have a group of presumably women discussing various gender related issues including Trans, women of colour, lesbians, etc. sorry, but what gives these women the right to discuss issues relating to groups they are not part of (they can't all be trans coloured lesbians), but to exclude men. Are we not just another demographic? And yeah, I completely understand the white male hetero privilege thing, but that doesn't mean we don't have a view on a given issue. Unless you subscribe to the Suey Park philosophy?

Aussie builders shock public with loud empowering statements

Being hungry makes you a better and more respectful human being. But don't worry! Eat a delicious Snickers bar and you'll be back to being an asshole again!

Police, Lies, Videoptape - Unlawful Arrest of Protester

RunRabbitRun says...

The guy drove to the site. He had not been drinking whilst on the site. The officer said he smelled of Alcohol there are the grounds for reasonable suspicion. I don't believe they had another round of reasonable suspicion at the station, they'd just follow procedure. It's more likely that they were simply to busy, you could see they were short staffed at the protest.

You are assuming the police officer made it up, however it would be a seriously stupid plan as if the guy had taken the test and it had come back negative, well the plan doesn't really go anywhere does it?

No the police don't have the right to do what, but they do have the power to right to detain given reasonable suspicion that is what happened here.

You wrong on the right to refuse the "road side" test, unless you have a genuine reason not to do the test like a medical condition (being an arsehole doesn't count) you are obligated to take the test given reasonable suspicion.

Unless there are some unusual circumstances the police will arrest take you back to the station and then use the machine back at the station (unlikely to be a blood test but a lot more sophisticated breath testing machine) to get an accurate reading, if it measures over the limit you will then be prosecuted, if not you won't.

Now your all for innocent till proven guilty, but you soon assumed the police guy was guilty of, well power abuse? Which you can't do as the camera doesn't have smellovision.

I suspect it more to do with you not liking police/authority, and the police man was acting arsy.

It's not surprising when they have to put up with the crap and abuse they have to, that sometimes they behave this way especially at a protest, that's just being human. Apparently he's a Salford Officer as well I don't envy him one bit policing that shole.
