I used to play a LOT of EQ. First few years just soloing, then I got sucked into raiding with my Shadowknight.. Ugh. 4..5..6+ hours every night, about 7 nights a week. Talk about addiction.. It was fun getting flagged for Time. After that, it just sucked and I should have stopped when it stopped being fun and was more like a task. Eventually I got the picture.. get out while you are still sane!!

ANYWAY: I am better now I am playing a lot of WOW, but just doing antisocial soloing and lots of tradeskills. I have 2 level 80s and a half a dozen 60+ levels and all tradeskill to +400 levels, a bunch to 450. Yes, I play a lot, but I am not obsessed and I can take a day, or a week or two off whenever I feel like not playing.

Obviously I get addicted to things very easily.. like to EQ and VS.. I start, and I feel like I need to be the best! It took a while to see I don't really need to do that.. I can be good without being obsessed I love this place, but I really, really needed to slow down.

One day, I might be cured. If not, oh well..

I am familiar with it... but it makes things that bit more unsettling. That these people would never call me a faggot to my face is perhaps true, but if we take it that (perceived) anonymity is all that it takes for them unveil their antisocial/homophobic tendencies, then they must have these tendencies in the first place. I don't believe that Internet anonymity makes people express opinions and attitudes that they don't already have. The strip you linked to is based on the premise that these are ordinary people - and that's disturbing too.

- CaptainPlanet420? - No, he was banned for deliberately and repeatedly using the wrong channel assignments, just to stir up some shit. He had already been banned for 2 weeks for the same offense prior to his permanent ban for repeat offending.

- BillOreilly? - No, he flamed out by going on a downvote spree, discarding a valid Sift Talk post, and declaring a good video dead. It was vandalism, plain and simple.

- choggie? - No, he flamed out by writing an ad hom Sift Talk post because the admins wouldn't give him another channel, then going on a downvote spree, and then discarding a video for no good reason. This was after he had already been banned for two weeks for wrongfully discarding a video, and prior to that he wrongfully discarded a video too, and he was warned to never do it again. So choggie's exile had nothing to do with his political views, and everything to do with his antisocial behavior.

- MINK? - MINK was never banned. He imposed his own exile. And people generally didn't like his comments NOT because they went against the prevailing sentiments, but because he generally labeled everything and everyone as "retarded." When you do something like that over and over, it's considered in most quarters to be "flaming."

- quantumushroom? - QM was temporarily banned for a downvote spree, not for his dissenting point of view. He's still here, BTW

If it were true that all members whose political points of view were not lefty/liberal have been systematically run off, then we wouldn't have blankfist, MarineGunrock, Doc_M, quantumushroom, Winstonfield_Pennypacker, and imstellar28 here, among others.

I won't debate you that this site is largely liberal, because it just is. However I remember when Ron Paul was the bees knees here, and he ain't exactly a darling of the left.

I look at this in two different ways. First, at the micro level, this is just an online community, and the worst punishment we can mete out is exile. There are rules of conduct that are pretty lax, and allow for a lot of antisocial behavior before people become willing to invoke a ban, even temporary ones. Most of the rules are designed to preserve the integrity of the site's main function as a video sifter, and with some mild attempts to protect the community that's formed around the site as a secondary concern.

At this level, the chief reason to be in favor of the formalized Siftquisitions is that we've grown big enough that it's just not fair to expect our admin to take personal responsibility for settling all disputes over the rules, especially when they're heavily colored by interpersonal interactions.

In short, we need to keep dag a happy camper, so he doesn't say "fuck it all" and shut the place down because it's all too much stress having some couple hundred 5 year-olds to discipline.

On a macro level, I hope most people would say that history tells us monarchy isn't a great system of government. It's possible for it to not be a disaster, but it can get out of control very quickly.

Democracy in this kind of raw form has some potential pitfalls too, but at least the responsibility or blame is shared by everyone equally. This is something I think many people fail to understand about our government in general -- just because you voted against the mob, it doesn't eliminate your culpability as a citizen.

Mostly though, I don't think it's fair to vote dag Emperor of the Sift, and try give up your own responsibility to make this place work.

You'll be able to vote in every Siftquisition, once, and post as many comments as you like to try to sway people to see things your way.

In the meantime, I think dag's got it right -- if he's elected Chancellor of the Sift, his first action should be to order everyone to heed the democratic system, or be sentenced to work the deadpool for 30 years.

The Wanted graphic novel is fantastic, if a bit nihilistic even for my tastes. It could just as rightly be titled "Wanton". There`s even less heroism than the movie, none of this "kill one to save a thousand" rationalization. The story is brilliant if you've read enough comic books to absorb all the meta stuff. Wanted has a permanent spot on my "public" comic book shelf, a few spots down from The Watchmen.

James Mcavoy's character rapes women and then murders them, for fun. One of his first actions after getting his powers is to go on a killing spree of every one who has ever wronged him. It's a fucked up work of antisocial adolescent fantasy, the kind of work you'd expect from the imagination of the colombine murderers or the virginia tech gunman.

There may be some interesting ideas thrown in, but that does not save the series from the weak plot and all the gratuitious sex and violence. It's no where near the level of great graphic novels like the watchmen.
