Cutting Edge Prosthetic Arms (no pun intended)

Americas Got Talent - Great Illusionist

spawnflagger says...

So my guess is that the black guy in scrubs is actually 2 people, the head/arms/torso being a little person or amputee, and the legs being a taller person (maybe contortionist), whose upper half is inside the cart until the end, when he's actually holding the other guy to do the jumping and walk off the stage.

I agree, it is much harder to see with the cut-aways to the judges.

great showmanship though.

WTF was he thinking? He can't punch, he can't kick, and how was he going to pull off any submissions?

The black knight always triumphs.

If it could climb stairs, you'd have applications as an ambulatory device for amputees and paraplegics. I love the under-side view showing the mechanism in action. You can see that it's not super complicated, just extremely well-engineered.

Darkhand, I was being sarcastic. The "is this wealth" comment was in relation to another conversation going on over in Sift Talk.

It was something of a zen koan, because wealth is seen only as capital by the majority of dimwits who run this country.

Is the woman wealthier for having the mermaid outfit? Is the company of artists and professionals who made it for her richer for the experience?

Roughy, Westeners sometimes do incredible things just for the fun and challenge of it.

As opposed to easterners, or southerners, or northerners?

You have a dangerously shallow mind.

I'm not sure what you're asking but I'm going to assume you are saying "Didn't she pay for this?".

I'm going to answer no because as indicated in the video the company does this in their "spare time". If someone was paying you for something you'd treat it just like any other job.

The company also said "we won't make another of these" if people wanted to buy the product they would sell it no?

Lastly the gentleman representing the company says "we learned a lot from this project" which is him justifying doing it for free as a one time thing.

wow. ok. so 1) ive spent my entire adult life in a hospital as a health care provider. 2) ive spent my entire entire life caring for/surrounded by people with psyciatric disorders

that said. i have no idea how i feel about this. mostly i feel like people should be able to do whatever they want with their bodies as long as it does not infringe on the rights of others. the other part of me knows the consequences of becoming an amputee. and i feel like unneccesary medical procedures are unethical, dangerous to the patient, a huge contributor to rising healthcare costs and happen WAAAAAY more often than you'd think.

i have decided that gastric bypass is mutalation. and also just a bandaid. i have no problem with sex change operations. i am concerned about the implications of making someone who is not disabled, disabled. these 2 people seem to lead productive lives and seem self sufficient so maybe they do not illustrate what concerns me. i know i would be out of both of my jobs if i decided i couldnt live with my limbs anymore, no job because im disabled= momma gets on disability and food stamps and state health insurance! and now me and my 2 children are now a financial drain on society and infriging on the rights of others. selfish. they will undoubtly need help with certain daily functions they probably take for granted now, im pretty sure i would have a hard time finding compassion and patience and time to help a loved one who put themselves in that position in this fashion.

its probably time to reevaluate my positions on medical ethics and gov't assistance.

Bionic Hand

Lumm says...

Speaking as the parent of a child with a congenital amputation, based on the many hundreds of amputees I have met at conferences I think it is fair to say that there are many causes of amputation, and stupidity is rarely one them. Among leading the candidates (*not* in order frequency or anything):
1. Congenital amputation
2. Diseases such as a variety of cancers and meningitis
3. Accidents (work place and otherwise)
4. War

There seem to be a lot advances in upper-limb prosthetics just around the corner. I'm sure many of them will never pan out for broader use for one reason or another, but I hope a least a few of these technologies live up to their promise.
