JFK - The Speech That Killed Him
You know he's talking about the Bush family et al right?
the value of whataboutism
Sadly, he (hopefully not willfully) has missed the point of "Whataboutism" entirely. The issue is not saying "what about..." this other thing about the thing we are talking about, but rather, when you say "what about..." this thing about something entirely unrelated. As an example, from his video, If someone were to say "Jeeze, Bush really wasn't that bad", you would be fully within your rights to say "What about all the people he inadvertently killed?".
It's when you, for example, say "Trump is a lunatic" and the response is "Yeah, but what about how Hillary sold children for sex in a pizza shop" that people have a problem with. The current Republican way of handling anything tricky is to throw out some non-sequitur and hope it sticks, while never actually discussing the original topic.
Again, saying: "Hillary was the best Sec. State ever" and having some one say "Yeah, but what about Benghazi?" is perfectly acceptable and not at all what John Oliver et al. are complaining about.
On another note, the clips he showed relating to how democrats would love to have Bush back, are being interpreted without the understanding that they are being spoken in jest (ie. sarcasm). They don't really want him back they are just attempting levity in that they want to show how much they think Trump is unfit for office by saying that they would even take the buffoon back if they could get rid of him. This is not an approval of Bush, but a lesser of two definite evils thing.

YES! I saw Dr. D opening for Weird Al years ago. We were seated in the orchestra pit ... could see up their nostrils by gum!
Thanks.
I thought it had a good ole Dr Demento feel.

New Rule: Distinction Deniers
Or, just maybe there were people who were happy to hear they weren't the only ones who find the whole "kill them all and let god sort them out" mentality a little disturbing.
Nobody here is trying to argue that the Harvey Weinsteins' or the Al Frankens' of the world should not be held to account. Only that the punishment should reflect the severity of their actions, and not just how their actions make you feel.
I used to think the Internet was for Porn, but now I'm beginning to think it's really for outrage and we aren't made to live in a constant state of outrage.
I was struck by the decidedly male and extremely loud whooping and cheering as Bill talked.
Spoke volumes, that did.
I am willing to bet $100 that some of those whoopers have been and continue to be creepy with women.
Thank you @ChaosEngine. Per usual, you are a lovely calming flow of reason and understanding in a turbulent time. You sound like a human being. Just... a human being.
I love that in a person.
The Truth About The Tesla Semi-Truck
The video is right that pretty much the number one most important question is the weight of the truck (basically tare weight, which is actually the tractor plus empty trailer). When I watched the announcement, I thought Musk was slightly cagey about that, but I thought that he said that it would be in the ballpark of a normal ICE semi. Guess I should watch again.
I think Musk made some semi-optimistic predictions about battery tech improvement and economy of scale. Frankly, I think he's earned the right to be semi-bold with his predictions, given his and Tesla's track record (paying off govt. loan very early, single handedly pushing forward battery tech and production, etc. etc.). His optimistic predictions have a tendency of panning out.
The average American is never going to switch to an electric car purely or even largely for "green conscious" reasons. The switch will happen when the electric car is better than the ICE alternatives in concrete metrics like performance, reliability, and operating cost. Musk is pushing that date forward at an incredible pace. Arguably it is already true for many use-cases at the high price-point range of the Model S, but that price point limits the scope of the impact quite a bit. He knows that to really shake things up, he's got to get that price point down, and he knows that to do that he's got to improve the economy of scale on battery tech. Which he's doing by expanding it into adjacent markets like home batteries, etc.
I think he deserves a lot of credit for "walking the walk" when it comes to working hard to protect/improve the environment, as opposed to Al Gore et al. "talking the talk".

Colbert To Trump: 'Doing Nothing Is Cowardice'
Here's a Canadian example:
http://nationalpost.com/news/canada/aly-hindy-salaheddin-islamic-centre
A mosque who's former founder has gone off to lead a team of Al Qaeda linked suicide bombers in Iraq. The mosque Ohmar Khadr's father brought their family to before relocating them to fight for Bin Laden in Pakistan. The mosque attended by the leaders of the largest terrorist ring Canada has broken up thus far. Other members have gone off to join terrorists in Somalia and Egypt.
The question of should we be setting up some manner of legal accountability for an organization that is clearly idealogically supporting these things isn't a clear and obvious, nope, nothing can be done. At least not any more than nope, nothing can be done is clearly the answer to the Vegas shootings.
