great series

what kind of work did you do on it? and was it awesome?

an regarding the movie, maybe the franchise will get its comeuppance in the inevitable sequel. hopefully the 8% rottentomatoes rating will mean they put someone else on it.

I worked on the series for about 4 years, and am thoroughly depressed that the execs took our hard work and took a giant shit all over it.

#1 The Village, 17th century village living off I-95
#2 The Happening, plants create wind
#3 Signs, aliens invade planet comprised of 70% water, are allergic to water
$4 The Lady in the Water, never seen it, heard its AWFUL
#5 I'm sure one of his other films make a 5th

from the writer/director of the top five worst movies ever
Indulging in a big piece of hyperbole, I can see "The Happening" making that kind of list.. but he's got nothing else close to being that bad. I can see not liking "The Village" or "Unbreakable" - but they're middle of the road movies at worst. There's so many unwatchable movies out there that I'm happy to see something goofy from M Night, even if it's deeply flawed.
Just recently I just sat through "Easy Virtue" in the theater, and a few weeks ago we rented "Random Hearts". Either of those makes anything M Night has ever done look amazing. And those horrible films are still leagues above tripe like Boll (OK, maybe not Random Hearts, that was pretty bad). I've never understood what seems to be a very common, fairly baseless hate-on for M Night.
For example, I sat through "Lady in the Water" in the theater. I remember walking out I could hear everyone talking about how it was "the worst movie ever". But those same people were laughing their guts out during the film (at points that were intended for comedy).. and I laughed a good bit too. It was a bizarre train wreck of a movie, but it was entertaining.

Transformers/ GI Joe aren't the only shitty toy-based movies

I keep wondering if the Pokemon/Yu-gi-oh/Chaotic/Bakugan fans of today are going to be pissed off in 20 years when Hollywood rapes their childhoods for crappy live action movies.

Though they are getting it a little early with the sure-to-be-abysmal M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender.

OK, so what does this make this TV series popular? I watched a few clips, but they don't hit me.

Well, we worked our asses off for five years on that show. Basically our motto was "Myazaki every two weeks". We tried to do in two weeks what Myazaki/Ghibli took two years to create.

I think the stories, the arching narratives, the art direction, and obviously the hi-intesity and wicked kung-fu sequences were/are something that has never been produced in the US animation market. But this is why we also used Japanese animation studios, instead of Korean or Phillipine studios. (we did character setups here, the rest of the in-betweens were done overseas). The Japanese studios have a certain grace in what they do, and I hope it shows through on-screen.

The show is not for everyone, and even I get sick of some of the dialogue and cutesy girly stuff here and there. But, I think what we managed to pull-off with a TV production budget was pretty astounding.

^Actually, the car accident occured while they were still filming A New Hope, and the change is indeed apparent. They had to use a double for him in a few scenes. It's too bad because he was a hottie in A New Hope. But he's friggin Mark Hamill so who cares?

Mark Hamill is awesome. He has done TONS of work since Star Wars, but it is almost always voice acting and TV. Not many people realize that his voice is all over the place in the animation world because he sounds nothing like himself. My favorite role that he has played since Star Wars is Fire Lord Ozai in Nickelodean's Avatar: The Last Airbender (an excellent show and highly recommended even for adults). He is great in that role and as creepy and intimidating as anything.
