Bill Maher - Milo Yiannopoulos Interview

greatgooglymoogly says...

So he's apologizing for 1 or 2 statements and saying the rest is all just misundertood/ out of context? A bit less than I was expecting. He was smart to remind us it isn't our place to tell him how to deal with his own abuse though. I thought the clip was much more "here's my views on the subject" than him trying to be funny and offensive, but I guess that's all subjective. Just like getting banned from Twitter, I expect this will only increase his reach in the future. And being technically correct is my main aim, so thank you.

Wait for it...

transmorpher says...

I was basing it on his overall attention demanding outfit(the real fur(sigh), the camo, the red shoes), the breed of cat and the stand out carrier which also aims to show of his uncommon kitty breed, and also that cats usually aren't fond of traveling like dogs are, so people don't tend to take their cats with them like you would with a dog. And the cats ears are pointing downwards which means it's scared, so it's probably not one of the rare cats with an outgoing personality.

Oh wait, maybe I've got it all wrong. Could this indeed be some kind of "grab-proof" carrier, suitable for the current political climate?

Why would you assume this is a fashion statement? I didn't even consider something that crazy. Of course i always assume people LOVE their pets. Seems like a cat carrier to me. Much better than the cat carrier i use to use. Especially if your mode of transport is on foot. Do you always assume the worst in all situations where animals are involved?

I guess its possible you are somewhat joking but from your past comments i assume you are serious.

http://www.counterpunch.org/2017/01/13/why-ridiculous-official-propaganda-still-works/

The primary aim of official propaganda is to generate an “official narrative” that can be mindlessly repeated by the ruling classes and those who support and identify with them. This official narrative does not have to make sense, or to stand up to any sort of serious scrutiny. Its factualness is not the point. The point is to draw a Maginot line, a defensive ideological boundary, between “the truth” as defined by the ruling classes and any other “truth” that contradicts their narrative.

FedEx Driver drifting a Jackknifed Truck like a boss

bitterbug says...

Never did a stint as a commercial driver, but passed all the courses and went through down to the Michigan Decision Driving training grounds and did runs in trucks with jacknife scenarios, etc.

He's not drifting there. His trailer brakes are locked up. And because of inertia and ice his trailer is trying to pass his cab.

The goal is to maintain control but keep as low a speed as possible, so you give power to the cab to pull the trailer back into line in a normal situation. In this case he doesn't want to accelerate because there's no safe ground to regain control on, so he's going to aim for keeping the cab going at equal to or just slightly faster than the trailer.

As soon as he hits a clear patch of pavement or level ground then a little bit of acceleration from the cab pulls the trailer back in line behind the cab, drop the acceleration as the drag from the trailer slows you down, etc.

A good reason to always wait before pulling back in after passing a truck on the highway. In an emergency their maneuvers can take long distances when fully loaded. If something goes wrong during your passing maneuver your want to be as far out of their way as possible.

Comcast Repairmen Unconcerned Of Wrecks They Are Causing

Screw em...I would aim for the bright yellow safety bumpers. They're there to protect your car from damage.
Those fuckers needs to be fired....today...but it's comcast, so horrendous treatment of the public is their company motto.

How a country slides into despotism (from 1946)

Spacedog79 says...

I see from the tags that this is aimed at Trump supporters, but speaking as a pinko commie leftie I think the neoliberal elite left is just as guilty albeit in less blatantly racist ways. They seem more than happy to allow corruption of the political process with lobbyists and accelerating the shift of money and power to the top 1%.

Overwatch Animated Short | "Infiltration"

RedSky says...

I kind of had the opposite reaction, although I only watch streams of people playing BF1, didn't actually personally play it. Whereas I have some 150 hours in Overwatch right now.

BF1 and the series in general puts me off since it has so much down time. So much time seems to be spent just looking for someone to shoot or aiming at at a few tiny pixels miles away. Whereas Overwatch has familiar map choke points and if someone flanks you, it's almost certainly your fault for not paying attention.

Also Overwatch just offers so much in variety of play styles. I have a core of maybe 5 heroes I'm good at, but there's at least half the roster I haven't even seriously tried playing. Haven't even tried to get good at Hanzo's bow or Junkrat's remote jumps. BF offers the close quarters, rifle, sniper, vehicle and plane gameplay I've seen too much of already.

I tried their free weekend, and it was fun for a bit but even after two days I found it repetitive. It certainly is very pretty and polished but I felt no need to play it again after the free weekend was over.

Battlefield 1 on the other hand... I've purposely avoided buying it because I know once I do it'll be the only game I play for months on end.

Trump Rushed Off Stage in Reno Due to Gun Threat

newtboy says...

Except, oops, there was no gun, and there was no threat, just a peaceful protester getting the shit beaten out of him by the crowd.
That said, had there been an actual threat, his just standing there dumbfounded would have given them plenty of time to steady, aim, and fire. Maybe next time.

How Many Countries is the U.S. Currently Bombing?

transmorpher says...

I totally agree, we should always strive for perfection, but to me it's the priority that is important.

So when we strive for perfection, the priority would always be clean up the most damaging parts first.

I'm in no way implying that we shouldn't aim to reduce civilian casualties, but really trying to put things in perspective.

1: the US prides itself on its freedoms and rights. to then do what they do is somewhat hypocritical. Everyone hates a hypocrite. Even though your counter arguments are validly disgusting and inhumane, the people doing those things aren't doing them hypocritically.

2: If you strive for perfection, most people will probably fall to an above average level. If you strive for average, most people will fall to a failing level.

Why Home Ownership is Actually a Terrible Investment

ChaosEngine says...

House prices in major cities are a huge problem, undoubtedly.

But I see that as orthogonal to whether buying a house is a smart decision or not.

Obviously, if you can't afford the deposit, then buying is really an option (and don't get me wrong, that sucks, and we NEED to do something about that), but this video appears to be aimed at people who COULD buy a home.

Jinx said:

Dunno. Rent here is just as exorbitant as house prices. And yeah, the deposit is usually the major block for new buyers - if you can afford to rent where you want to buy chances are you can afford the mortgage repayments. If you don't have the bank of mum and dad backing you, goooooood fucking luck.

Taking Personal Responsibility for Your Health

dannym3141 says...

I think @transmorpher is either being a little deceitful or has completely confused himself, so I'd just like to make a few points clear:

Dr. Neal Barnard is the person who said "plant based diets (quitting meat) is the equivalent of quitting smoking."

I can find no evidence of the WHO referring to Dr. Barnard's study or any other work. They certainly would not condone that statement because it is bullshit science as previously stated.

Dr. Barnard appears on the website Quackwatch which aims to "combat health-related frauds, myths, fads, fallacies, and misconduct." Quackwatch is well respected, except amongst quacks.

To summarise, this means that he is quoting a study written by a known quack, and using the WHO statement on carcinogenic effect to support it. There is no scientific basis for using the WHO statement as confirmation of Dr. Barnard's quote about quitting smoking (see previous comment). It is Dr. Barnard who refers to the WHO, not vice versa.

It also means that there is only one person and study saying that it is more healthy to quit meat than smoking, as far as i can tell. Perhaps other studies say the same thing with different wording and I can't find it - but the onus is not on me to find the evidence, it is upon you to supply it.

Cops Chase Innocent 10-Year-Old With Guns Drawn

newtboy says...

Of course they went after him with guns drawn and aimed...he admitted he had just been shooting in the interview.

Gun safety says you never point your gun at anything you don't intend to shoot, and never shoot at anything you don't intend to kill. Fire every cop that pulled their gun, please, and not one day of paid leave first.

Good thing he ran home and others came to his rescue, or who knows what the outcome might have been. This is why people are sniping cops, because cops are being murderous. Turnabout is fair play, and protecting your community is reasonable, even if it's protecting it from those charged with protecting it.

It's time to force police to not only wear body cameras that can't be turned off or erased but also holsters that indicate every time they pull their weapons, and require evidence (video or physical evidence, not their word) that it was warranted or be charged with a felony like any other citizen would be. Tampering with or otherwise disabling the camera should also be felonious, punishable by mandatory prison time...imo.
Legislators, get to it.
