LIVE Webcam Feed From the International Space Station
>> ^jonny:
No, it doesn't work for me because there is no browser on the Mac that can embed windows media. It's a known bug created because Microsoft programmed their hooks for the plugin in a non-standard way. (This info might be out of date.)
That sucks. So you can't see the video even by going to NASA's site then? Shitty.
Well, since I doubt NASA is going to change their live streaming platform anytime soon .. I can make this a sift talk post instead and promote it every week or so .. so the small fraction of viewers with windows based machines can enjoy it .. or you could return it and let it die it's miserable death in my p-queue .. whichever.
People should definitely contact NASA and complain, this material should be as cross platform friendly as possible.
I do think the concept of live feed Sifts is very interesting in any event and this one especially. Sorry you can't enjoy it!
And just a side of awesome .. I got to listen to a wrong "phone call" placed between NASA Mission Control and .. someone (Russian staff aboard the ISS? .. not sure .. these guys never shut up really) while I typed this

Yuri Gagarin Flight Video: 1st human flight into space ever.
WikiPedia:
Lieutenant General Vladimir Sergeyevich Ilyushin (Russian: Владимир Сергеевич Илюшин) (born 31 March 1927) is a son of aircraft designer Sergei Ilyushin and a noted test pilot in the Soviet Union. He spent most of his career as a test pilot for the Sukhoi OKB.
Ilyushin is purported to be a cosmonaut; it is alleged he became the first man in space on 7 April 1961. This honor is generally attributed to Yuri Gagarin whose spaceflight, Vostok 1, took place on 12 April.
The theories surrounding this alleged orbital spaceflight are that a failure aboard the spacecraft caused controllers to bring the descent capsule down several orbits earlier than intended, which resulted in its landing in the People's Republic of China whereupon the pilot was held by Chinese authorities for a year before being returned to the Soviet Union. The international embarrassment that would have resulted from having their pilot held is cited as the Soviets' reason for not publicizing this flight and instead focusing their adulation on the subsequent successful flight of Gagarin.
However, there are reasons to disbelieve this allegation, notably that although both were Communist governments, relations between the Soviets and Chinese were strained, and the propaganda value to the Chinese of a Soviet pilot captured flying over their territory would have given little reason for Chinese complicity in a coverup.
According to Mark Wade, editor of the well known website Encyclopedia Dramatica, "The entire early history of the Soviet manned space program has been declassified and we have piles of memoirs of cosmonauts, engineers, etc who participated. We know who was in the original cosmonaut team, who never flew, was dismissed, or was killed in ground tests. Ilyushin is not one of them."

BAN ALL SIFTQUISITIONS!!! (Wtf Talk Post)
^ btw: I'm gonna eat the hell out of your icon in two days. (sans chapeau)
And this thread is great, I'm so happy I'm an asshole enough to start it. Watching a load of people I don't know, attack eachother, is out-of-this-world awesomezzz!11!!
ps: I was a member of a music forum for about five years, but over time, a large clique emerged from ppl who knew eachother IRL. They invited more and more of their RL friends aboard, who in turn, ganged up on other members who weren't quite as "popular" or "cool" as the big gang. Not only did members end up leaving in droves, but others started getting viciously attacked for mostly no-good-reasons a 'tall.
I was one who was backed into a corner, forced to defend myself, but then ended up unsubscribing entirely.
One has to watch out for that kind of behavior. Group-think and cliques can destroy a community that once had good motives.

distribute the money to the larger cities to fund a train system that so far no private investor has found a way to make profitable (else there would be rail systems all over this country).
Nah.
Walk around in downtown Los Angeles, or downtown Detroit and you'll notice dead, rusted-over traintracks embedded in the streets.
At one point in time, most major cities had profitable, reliable and usable mass transit train systems. I don't want to start a history lesson here, but as the story goes; the Big-3 bought up all the rail and the companies that operated them, and demolished it all to prop up their new congolmerates.
>> ^blankfist:In California they passed a terrible proposition to fund a highspeed rail system from San Diego to San Fran.
Actually, WE passed it, with smiles on our faces.
And everyone I know, up and down this coast, is very excited about this. Which is precisely why we voted for it (I thought you were a left-coaster blanky?) And just because its funded by taxpayer revenue, doesn't mean small communities won't benefit from it. I mean, I don't use every bridge in some podunk town that my tax money paid for, but I'm not crying about it. Bridges, trains, roads, schools, etc etc etc, benefit everyone. If not directly, then so be it. That's how shiz werkz.
The idea of taking a 200+mph train, only 2 hours, from LA to the Bay Area is unfunkingbelievablyawesome to me. To not have to waste so much gas and time driving the 7 hour trek, or take a horribly wasteful plane ride (also too expensive, then with the take-off-your-shoes-cant-bring-water-aboard nonsense) is very exciting.

All aboard brothers,
Free ticket to paradise,
The fare was My life.
Swimming Scallops !
When I dove the Channel Islands last year, we spent a couple dives hunting for scallops. They are surprisingly hard to find since they blend into the rock so well. There was one instance we found some scallops in a deep crevice. It was too deep to reach them, but it looked like they were a good 8 inches wide!
When the scallops were brought back on board the boat, the cooks would cook them any way we wanted.
Man, food on a live-aboard is the only way to go!
Halifax Explosion - Canadian Heritage Spot
This blew my mind when I was a kid. Huh, the wiki article states that there were actually 300, not 700 people aboard the train that was successfully contacted and alerted. Vince Coleman is a hero regardless! Great post.
