World condemns Gaza flotilla raid - Russia Today

radx says...

Like I mentioned earlier, they could have requested the UNIFIL task force to intercept the flotilla if they had any reasonable suspicion of weapons aboard.

Then again, Turkish officials say each and every person aboard was checked before they set sail, just like the vessels themselves. And now even the UN security council legitimized the convoy in their presidential statement:

The council urges Israel to permit full consular access, to allow the countries concerned to retrieve their deceased and wounded immediately, and to ensure the delivery of humanitarian assistance from the convoy to its destination.

Statements made by members of German parliament who were aboard and returned home this morning also contradict a lot of statements by Israeli officials over the last 24h.

Bicycle Rush Hour In The Netherlands

cybrbeast says...

Hey that's my hometown again, second time this week
I usually cycle by one crossing further than this place. There are even busier times and places than this crossing. This is near the station which is why there is so much public transport coming by.

Capturing Somali Pirates, First Person Shooter View

No hostages? No wonder they could open fire freely during their boarding without worry of hitting someone they shouldnt.

Since I'm Dutch and obviously understand the narrator, I thought I'd chip in.

The pirates did not have any hostages as all crew members were all in a safe room aboard the ship. Seems they must've all locked themselves in the moment they got boarded.

I rather be a bit annoyed and a bit late than dead.

I agree with the overall thrust of your comment (racial profiling is not just immoral, but it also presents a weakness to be exploited), but I should mention that I don't think current airline security policy is really saving lives, nor do I think its only cost is inconvenience.
We're skirting along the lines of surrendering our 4th amendment rights with what we're doing now. Just imagine if there's some big attack on malls, and the reaction is to have the TSA do security for every shopping mall in the country.
I feel like the right answer is for us to deal with terrorism like any other murder -- don't start infringing the freedom of everyone in the name of security, just go after the people who pose the threat, and let people live their lives without having intrusive security measures inflicted on them.

Point taken. You are correct and I agree with you to some extent, the not saving lives bit, as it is impossible to stop a truly dedicated attack on anything really. I haven't flown in the US, only in Europe, so I don't know how bad/intrusive the checks are over there therefore I can't agree or disagree about that point, I have no data to support either view. However over here it has mostly been a bit of an inconvenience: take of your shoes, in England, and not being allowed to bring any fluids aboard, everywhere I have been (like I am going to hijack a plane with a bottle of coke, I mean seriously WTF!, My house keys are a better weapon than that and they suck as a weapon.)

Report From the Seal Slaughter - Spring 2010

Bidouleroux says...

How is this different from killing a fish by hitting the head with a hammer and then gutting it? The only difference really is that seals have harder skulls and thus may need to be hit two or three times before they stop moving completely (the first hit probably kills 95% of them, but some still move just like a headless chicken would).

By the way, rifles are used to kill adult seals, since they move too fast on ice. But of course you don't see that because it's not "brutal" enough. What you see in the videos is always hunting of 12 to 15 days old seals who have begun molting (their pelt changes from white to grey). These can be killed with only the hakapik since they can't move fast enough to escape a killing blow.

In Norway, a veterinary must be aboard each ship. Still the Norwegian rules for seal hunting state that : "Adult seals that are more than one year old must be shot in the head with expanding bullets, and can not be clubbed to death. The hakapik shall be used to ensure that the animal is dead. This is done by crushing the skull of the shot adult seal with the short end of the hakapik, before the long spike is thrust deep into the animal's brain. The seal shall then be bled by making an incision from its jaw to the end of its sternum. The killing and bleeding must be done on the ice, and live animals may never be brought onboard the ship. Young seals may be killed using just the hakapik, but only in the before mentioned manner, i.e. they need not be shot." (From wikipedia) Also, "In 2007 the European Food Safety Agency confirmed that the animals are put to death faster and more humanely in the Norwegian sealing than in large game hunting on land." The only difference with Canada I think is that Canadian hunters don't have to bleed them on the ice.

Night Carrier Approach and Landing

GeeSussFreeK says...

Warning tones are (1) radar altimeter (set to 1200' and 375') and (2) a rapid warning tone from the radar altimeter due to a generator failure. LSO calls for "Wing lights," which were lost due to the electrical malfunction (unknown to LSO). Expeditious emergency procedures for an electrical failure to regain lost electrical buses were completed while performing demanding tasks involved in landing a jet aboard the pitching deck of an aircraft carrier at night.

Luke Kelly Rocky Road to Dublin

ctrlaltbleach says...

I have know Idea what he was singing about.

edit
In the merry month of May, From my home I started,
Left the girls of Tuam, Nearly broken hearted,
Saluted father dear, Kissed my darlin' mother,
Drank a pint of beer, My grief and tears to smother,
Then off to reap the corn, And leave where I was born,
I cut a stout blackthorn, To banish ghost and goblin,
In a brand new pair of brogues, I rattled o'er the bogs,
And frightened all the dogs,On the rocky road to Dublin.

One, two, three, four five,
Hunt the hare and turn her
Down the rocky road
And all the ways to Dublin,
Whack-fol-lol-de-ra.

In Mullingar that night, I rested limbs so weary,
Started by daylight, Next mornin' light and airy,
Took a drop of the pure, To keep my heart from sinkin',
That's an Irishman's cure, Whene'er he's on for drinking.
To see the lasses smile, Laughing all the while,
At my curious style, 'Twould set your heart a-bubblin'.
They ax'd if I was hired, The wages I required,
Till I was almost tired, Of the rocky road to Dublin.

In Dublin next arrived, I thought it such a pity,
To be so soon deprived, A view of that fine city.
Then I took a stroll, All among the quality,
My bundle it was stole, In a neat locality;
Something crossed my mind, Then I looked behind;
No bundle could I find, Upon my stick a wobblin'.
Enquirin' for the rogue, They said my Connacht brogue,
Wasn't much in vogue, On the rocky road to Dublin.

From there I got away, My spirits never failin'
Landed on the quay As the ship was sailin';
Captain at me roared, Said that no room had he,
When I jumped aboard, A cabin found for Paddy,
Down among the pigs I played some funny rigs,
Danced some hearty jigs, The water round me bubblin',
When off Holyhead, I wished myself was dead,
Or better far instead, On the rocky road to Dublin.

The boys of Liverpool, When we safely landed,
Called myself a fool; I could no longer stand it;
Blood began to boil, Temper I was losin',
Poor ould Erin's isle They began abusin',
"Hurrah my soul," sez I, My shillelagh I let fly;
Some Galway boys were by, Saw I was a hobble in,
Then with a loud hurray, They joined in the affray.
We quickly cleared the way, For the rocky road to Dublin.

the story of your decade in 3 paragraphs or less (History Talk Post)

lucky760 says...

A decade ago I was wondering if Y2K was really going to bring down the world's computer infrastructure. I was several months into a serious relationship wondering how it would turn out. I was in community college as an uninterested business administration major wondering if I'd actually see it through. I was working in a great little company with a decent little job.

As of the end of this decade, Y2K is a joke, I'm married to that wonderful girl who turned out to be my soul mate, I changed majors to earn a BS in computer science, and I'm still at that little company enjoying every day I have the privilege to come to work.

Among the best things to happen for me this decade was being asked to come aboard this great little site I discovered called VideoSift.

I raise my glass to you @dag, James Roe (wherever you are), @siftbot, and the entire Sifter community. Auld lang syne and all that... Cheers!
