TDS 2/24/14 - Denunciation Proclamation
States below the Mason Dixon line were (and are) not considered "northern" states, even though some of them did not secede. That's why I mentioned it in the first place. Just ask someone who lives in one if they're a Yankee and see how that goes!
I did note that Delaware is East of the Mason Dixon, not North or South.
These "border" states were also the ones Lincoln tried (and failed) to compensate for the 'loss' of their slaves...before the war. (because his cabinet didn't follow along is testament to the fact that he put his political opponents in his upper administration in order to NOT be a unilateral decision maker...that didn't work.)
Delaware is actually within the "northern" side of the line which forms an L with Delaware to the East of it. But what does the line have to do with anything being discussed? They are also BELOW the north pole, so what?
CIA Admits It Was Behind Iran's Coup in 1953
The point is that this FOIA request produced the first official document to confirm the involvement of Allen Dulles and his spooks. The mere fact that the Brits and the Yankees were responsible for the coup is, of course, not news to anyone, or at least it shouldn't be.

If they presented some documents about, say, the installment of Suharto in Indonesia, it wouldn't be news either. But it would still be of interest to me.
"CIA releases information"......Oxymoronic??! Haven't peeps with the ability to dissect newsspeak and "official statements" known that the CIA orchestrated the Iranian coup for over 30 years?

freeD Yankee Stadium
See video here for explanation. Not to many cameras actually needed:
http://www.replay-technologies.com/technology.html
Our technology works by capturing reality not as just a two dimensional, or stereoscopic representation, but as a true three dimensional scene, comprised of three dimensional "pixels" that faithfully represent the fine details of the scene. This information is stored as a freeD™ database, which can then be tapped to produce (render) any desired viewing angle from the detailed information.
This enables a far superior way of capturing reality, which allows breaking free from the constraints of where a physical camera with a particular lens had been placed, to allow a freedom of viewing which has endless possibilities.
The current working deliverable of this technology ("Watch As U Want") allows producers and directors to create "impossible" camera views of a given moment in time as seen in Yankee Baseball YES View- But we believe that ultimately the biggest freeD™ innovation, as display technologies get better and more advanced, will allow the user to get fully and interactively immerse in the content.
They must have a string of at least a hundred cameras along that trajectory that synchronize their shutters (how they do it in film, too). Must be an expensive setup.
Very Rare Triple Play
Why is Forest Whitaker pitching a baseball game for the Yankees?
Very Rare Triple Play
Well, it was officially scored as the first 4-6-5-6-5-3-4 triple play in Major League history, and the first triple play of any kind for the Yankees in 45 years, but it would have never happened without two awful base running decisions.
Are triple plays really that rare? This particular type of triple play must be rare, but I figure the "caught line drive, step on second, throw to first" or simply a force out on all 3 bases must happen occasionally.
Game Of Thrones Season 3: Chaos Preview
I've heard of this but neither read the books nor seen even one episode. Can someone give me an outline? eg - magic the gathering the tv show, a connecticut yankee in king arthurs court, yet another robin hood thing...

I'd love to watch a proper documentary of this, but these over the top hype&drama yankee-style docs make me vomit.
Most Hilarious Chilli Challenge I've Ever Seen!
Even the most profligate girl-labeller would use 'grown woman' to refer to the other kind of guy in that scenario.
This is actually the key to our disagreement.
Are you unwilling to allow that the same words can suggest completely different meanings in different contexts?
I'm not talking about 'bear' and 'bear'. I'm not even talking about 'boy - a five year old male' and 'boy - a forty year old black guy'. I'm talking about 'boy - a forty year old black guy' and 'boy - a forty year old black guy'.
We're both aware 'boy' and 'girl' can be used in denigrating ways, so can, say, 'liberal', 'geek' and 'yankee'; and all of these have neutral and positive applications.
In fact no word has a meaning independent of the context in which it's used, this is literally true - words depend entirely on interaction with each other and on the circumstances of their transmission to impart information; rhetoricians call this 'interinanimation', dictionary writers call this 'damned annoying'. It's also true that no communication is possible where words have meaning only to their speaker. Consequently, language is an ongoing negotiation.
So, my position isn't that these words are literally interchangeable, in every context, but that they are interchangeable in a lot more contexts than you will admit. You have to look to the attitude of the speaker; to do that you have to examine what they're saying contextually. Monitoring individual word usage is a cheap, futile shortcut to understanding where a person is coming from.

I still think it is mostly about power, though, and your example of "grown man" kind of proves it to me. Why couldn't you say "grown boy"? If boy is the same as man, just as girl is the same as woman? A grown boy is indeed a man, yes? It actually is more accurate than "grown man."

Dumb Homophobic Christian Takes Stupid to New Depths
One last thing....
The really smart Southern business people?
They have been known to lay on their accent thick as molasses so the dumb Yankees will think the Southerner is dumb. And they play those Northerners.
And the Southerner laughs all the way to the bank.
Seattle Hipster Racism Meets Cool Cop
@bareboards2
Because you have a history of doing just that. I can think of at least 2 other times when I've seen you, and called you out for, attacking other people and then trying to play the victim. I don't need to wait for the end of the song to say, "That's Yankee-Doodle Dandy"; I can name that tune in 7 notes.I agree that sexism permeates not only our culture, but probably human nature. It's the sort of thing that we all need to constantly work on, but probably not something that will ever completely go away.
I became aware of the belittling use of "girl" about 20 years ago as a teenage comic book geek. If you go back to the golden and silver age, you see it a lot, but it's present more recently too: Superman and Supergirl, Batman and Batgirl, Invisible Girl, Marvel Girl. A lot of them who are still published have been renamed (Invisible Girl is now Invisible Woman and Marvel Girl goes by her "real" name, Jean Grey).
But that doesn't mean "girl" is always belittling. Neither is "boy". Often, it's just casual. If I go hiking with my friend and his wife says, "Where are you boys headed today?", nobody cares. It's casual conversation with familiar people. If someone calls me a boy the first time we meet, I might find them a little arrogant or obnoxious.
If that's your goal then I might suggest you rethink your approach. You are putting people off with your approach. Unfortunately, you've got a reputation to overcome as well, so you will have to be extra careful with your words around here if you want to get them heard.
In the case of this video, I don't think it particularly matters if "girls" was used in a belittling manner by the speakers (consciously or subconsciously) because the subjects of the story deserve to be belittled for how they behaved. I don't care if they want to call them "dumb bitches", something I normally find very distasteful, because they earned that shit.
Find me a case of someone calling a respectable, responsible, mature woman a girl or a bitch and I've got your back.

Also, I'd make a joke about overweight, out of shape Yankees at this point, but that would just be rubbing salt on it.
