VS needs Economy/Business Channel (Worldaffairs Talk Post)

volumptuous says...

News and World Affiars are entirely different beasts.

If someone breaks into a convenience store in Los Angeles and there's a funny news clip about it, it most certainly isn't World Affairs. And not all "world affairs" are on the news.

The Davos summit is a world affair, but none of the clips are specifically from a news broadcast channel.

The Election08 channel still serves a purpose, as Obama has yet to fill his cabinet, and there are a few tails of issues that are still permeating from the last Election. I'm sure within a few months tho, that channel will be pointless.

I'm all for the admin's creating this Economics channel.

VS needs Economy/Business Channel (Worldaffairs Talk Post)

Farhad2000 says...

News / World Affairs should really be rolled into one. Since this is a global site and usually events in one place have worldwide implications.

Economy would cover only business and economic issues.

Conspiracies would be better as a playlist. Since there is a very finite amount of video in that area.

Deano says...

Isn't News/World Affairs enough? Unless there's plenty of material both past and present for an Economics channel.

BTW a Conspiracies channel would be fun. Having said that, maybe it would make a better playlist.

BREAKING NEWS US Airways Plane Crashes in Hudson River

Krupo says...

*nochannel this has nothing to do with world affairs or terror. *News, *Travel & *Happy

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20090115.wplane0115/BNStory/International

Idiot can't identify the airbus... can't blame him I guess... unless he tried to count the # of windows to estimate its size. Meh. Reuters called it a small plane with "more than a dozen passengers" in their first report too.

I called happy on it, obviously, because everyone survived.

Slow Motion Genocide (Worldaffairs Talk Post)

13439 says...

The eDrama around here is loathsome to new members like me.

Someone is leaving because because other members either disagree or don't completely agree with their perspective on a specific world-affairs event. Is this really a big deal? It happens all the time on the intertubes. I've seen some real star members of other group-oriented sites leave, particularly ones that try and give ultimatums to "be more like what I want you to be or else", but the site lived on just fine without them.

Good interactive websites evolve and change in both membership and atmosphere as time passes. They must, because they are part of the internet culture which also changes over time (and Videosift is particularly affected by this, otherwise we'd still be seeing Numa Numa and All Your Base all over the friggin' sift).

I'm totally with gwiz here.
---------------------------------------------
Farhad, some input on your subscription suggestion: I haven't experienced this place enough to want to pay to be here - it's fun so far but still has to prove itself to me, and the ad revenue that I am contributing to through my viewcount helps drive my "contribution" for now, unless Videosift indicates it's not enough to pay for the place. I wouldn't sign up to post just yet if I had to pay to.

I'd expect that if you were to introduce a must-pay-to-sift model, this place would run the risk of stagnating rather quickly with a few core members keeping it alive and discussing the good ol' days like a bunch of bored seniors clustered around a single cup of coffee at the mall and rehashing their operation and guessing who's gonna die next. Dunno for sure if that would happen, but I've seen it occur elsewhere.
---------------------------
Videosift IS better than YouTube with respect to its comments. The spam is generally more clever and light-hearted, there's occasional insightful debate, and there's very little "lol u fag0t".

You don't have to hear it over and over again for it to be true.

US Spy Agencies Predict: USA To Lose its 'SuperPower' Status

burdturgler says...

Well there's only one nation with superpower status left, and that's America. The report predicts the decline of USA dominance in world affairs, with emerging nations (which aren't superpowers) taking on a more influential role, leaving us in a world where no superpower exists.

Conspiracy by liberals to ruin Dick Cheney

burdturgler says...

Schmawy:

You can discuss mine, start a siftquisition if you like. The tags and channels right now are the way I made them. I'm glad you agree they're the way they should be. It was only by "abusing" my privileges that they are that way.

You can try to make this about whatever you like, but the fact is, this was sent for discussion because of the Islam tag. I think you're projecting.

It's really strange watching you come to his defense here. I mean here on this specific post (because you do it everywhere). This is exactly the same crap he pulled on you. Changing things after the fact. I get you want to be the guy that's above it all, but really, do you recognize that this is a problem for the site?

Lets say someone puts up a video of the Dalai Lama meeting with some foreign leader. They give it the title "Man of Peace". It has the channels humanitarian, world affairs. Tags are dalai, lama, diplomacy. You vote for it.

It hits top 15 and then the title is changed to "Dalai Lama - Biggest Scumbag On Earth". Tags and channels are similarly changed to things that have nothing to do with the video. Do you want to have your vote on that video? I personally think this is abusive to the site, abusive of the privileges afforded to it's members, and abusive to the people who vote on videos here.

Bottom line, tags and channels need to reflect the content of the video for the site to function properly. That's why this was discussed.

Historic Interview : Aaron Russo on the New World Order

8727 says...

I'm faimiliar with the Rockefeller family in world affairs, and that they were the first billionaires in america. also that they openly talk about trying to create a one world government (easy to find quotes).
BUT, i can find no real evidence that this 'Nicholas' Rockefeller actually exists.. Either Aaron Russo's making it up, OR they're so powerful that their family members can be untraceable or have different aliases etc.. dunno

Obama the Neo-Conservative?

choggie says...

NetRunner???!! There is no definition for the newsspeak confabulatory term, Neocon. It's part of the delusion you wallow in, to justify what appears to be something you understand, with regard to world affairs.....I can get you some hallucinogens, sounds like the trip yer on may be chronic, approaching life-threatening....
What in FUCK, does "Judgment To Lead"(podium propaganda) ....EVEN FUCKING MEAN!!!????
Blackbush has em' hooked.....Blackwater is still hiring......

Jon Stewart on Bittergate and Boozegate

Crosswords says...

I'm not sure Gore was ever called an elitist during the election of 2000, but I think the same message applied back then. Bush used would rebut Gore's detailed (well at least for a presidential debate) arguments with things like 'fuzzy math', while saying nothing of his own plans. Its astounding how rampant anti-intellectualism is, and how well it works as a campaign tactic. Of course the implied message is, they don't understand your way of life. Well you know what, maybe they don't, I for one don't care if a president doesn't understand why I like to sit on my couch all day drink beer and scratch my nuts while watching NASCAR, so long as he/she has a fucking clue on how the economy works, or on world affairs.

Welcoming the Troops home. One Man, Thousands of Troops

choggie says...

hell man, can you blame Jersey??? Don't expect any fundamental human niceties from Jersey....seems that most of the folks that would hold responsible a soldier for their decision to join the US army, don't know the nature of the machine anyhow and live in fantastic tunnel reality paradigms that have nothing to do with the world of the now-We have always (the masses) had the power to end the bullshit, but most would no more share in the responsibility of the sorry state of world affairs than settle for anything but full cream in their lattes....

Stop the machine for a week by non-participation in commerce, transportation, credit, etc, then follow it up with a unified protest and demands....this is the only thing that has a hope for change-

A good few years of extreme natural disaster would accomplish much as well.....a bit of world panic from without would have a great effect on the collective psyche, and usually tends to bring out the best and the worst in monkeys-wees way overdue for some real change....How about we launch Obama from a catapult???

Of course....some might argue that the flip-side of the current paradigm's machine with all it's inequality, greed, and warmongering, is that it got us here, past the industrial rev, past atomic energy, at the doorstep of nanotech and beyond.....

Human nature being what it predictably bees, it will all end quite horribly is this man's guess.....
