Wow that API is pretty slick. With like 20 seconds of regex text editting I was able to grab the last 100 pages accessed. I could even grep for /search/ or whatever.

Can you sail downwind faster than the wind?

14051 says...

Let's not get personal, no need for that. We just have a difference of opinion, that's all!

BTW, I do know the concept of a wind tunnel, but I don't have one in my garden. ;-)
But I guess nobody really sees the point in spending the time and money to try to proof the concept inthere. What's the point after all? It's not gonna be profitable anyway, and I don't need to be convinced anymore anyway. So, I would just need to do that to convince you? I'm spending already way to much time and effort just on this forum...

BTW, do you believe/know that ice-sailors can go faster than the wind downwind VMG wise?

56 Leonard Street's video - Incredibly Interesting Building

spawnflagger says...

This is beautiful but scary. A little too much form, and not enough function. 60 stories @ 14' makes this over 800'. I highly doubt this design tested well in a wind tunnel... good thing NYC doesn't get typhoons or tornadoes.

Even Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater (pivotal example of cantilever design) is only 2 floors tall and even it had to have a steel support beam added years later otherwise the porch would have fallen into the creek... I'm sure building materials are better these days, but contractors are always cutting corners...

The jenga description is perfect though, just a question of when it'll collapse. I give it 40-50 years. (or much sooner should a suicide bomber strapped with C4 be taking a tour of one of the apartments on the lower floors...) But then again the security better be pretty damn tight if your apt is between $3.5 million and $33 million...

google maps location of the building here . Be sure to check street view.

Also, they'll probably enact a tenant agreement saying that residents can only buy Apple computers

lots of information and floorplans here - http://www.56leonardtribeca.com
site photo from october here , somehow I doubt they'll finish by 2010...

Tornado Passes Over People Under Overpass

lucky760 says...

I'm not sure you're right about that ReverendTed.

I believe it's not just a wind tunnel, but when the tornado winds are strong enough, the entire underside of the overpass becomes a giant vacuum.

Tornado Passes Over People Under Overpass

ReverendTed says...

The majority of the space under an overpass becomes a horrible wind tunnel of deadly debris in a tornado but, depending on the construction, there are usually areas at each end that create "pockets" with the road above, the embankment below and behind, and support girders on each side which would be relatively safe. (I believe this is illustrated in the video.)

Peregrine falcon recorded going 183 and 242 MPH in dives

timefactor says...

Great stuff!

Peregrines are amazing. I used to work on the 20th floor of a building in NYC near a bridge where a released pair nested and got to see them hunt (pigeons) and play in the air (they used to zoom around between buildings seemingly for nothing other than the fun of it). It was an incredible thrill to watch.

I read years ago that an aeronautical engineer skeptical of the 200+ MPH speeds attributed to Peregrines had tested a Peregrine cadaver in a wind tunnel and measured its terminal velocity at something like 75 MPH. He assumed that a live bird would be able to make itself somewhat more aerodynamic so his estimate of their actual speed was around 100 MPH. It looks like he grossly underestimated their ability to streamline.

Revolutionary Wind Generator

Lethin says...

i dunno, i'm thinking the sound it generates would be pretty Low, or very much just a base line. their frequency might be a little low for us to hear, that is a maybe of course. dogs and cats and birds would hates us tho. i wonder what kind of music a hillside off of the coast would play with all the changing wind speeds... you could build them like lego, tak a bunch on the side of buildings downtown where the wind tunnel effect is pretty strong

Lionel Trains and Space Missle Sets (males will enjoy this)

fdisk says...

As long as the train goes slow the balloons should stick to the center of the wind tunnel. Fans at stores used to have beach balls balanced in the airflow to show them working and you could gently toss them in and get them to stick. I never thought of using them as a target. That is brilliant. Upvote for toy projectiles!

The man in the cherry picker seemed to be a little big for the capsule.

supernice, supergood sifter, just keeps getting better and better...

has an amazing discard section. also has the playlist (The Damned) that shows how many good videos don't make it to the front page.

some of the best rickegee:
Tom Waits fishing with a fish in his pants
South Pole timelapse
Rahmens - Suffering of Inanimate Objects
Sun Ra Arkestra - Pink Elephants on Parade
Shortwave Spy Numbers from behind the Berlin Wall
Matthias Meyer - The Black Gallery
Kids Flying in a Wind Tunnel

and of course: Werner Herzog loves the Amazon Jungle
