Slavoj Zizek on They Live (The Pervert's Guide to Ideology)

enoch says...

@Babymech

ok.let us examine your counterpoints.

1.yeah.i agree.i never saw him as anybody but roddy piper.
2.agreed.while long,it does wear the banner of awesome.zizek may possibly be guilty of over-analyzing,but his comparisons bear some consideration.i find them to be justified.
3.this point you make is an exercise in circular logic and actually makes zizecks point.
where do you get your ideology from?
do you even have an ideology?
what makes you so certain of your ideology?
it is the question that is the real truth.
4.dont really understand your outrage here.sarcasm?
zizeck is exercising the pedagogy of philosophy.
referencing the matrix and pointing out that the wachowski brothers were not the first ones to create a movie with heavy philosophical tones.
john carpenter did it in the 80's with "they live".
and the philosophy of both movies is not exactly new.unless you consider 150 years to be "new".

maybe you disagree with the questions?
or are uncomfortable with the answers?
seem awfully defensive about people asking questions.

So why's everyone down on the Matrix trilogy? (Scifi Talk Post)

The problem with the 2nd movie was that it wasn't the first movie.
The problem with the 3rd movie was that they turned Neo into Jesus.

But I saw all 3 in theaters and bought all 3 on dvd, so WB and the Wachowski brothers are crying all the way to the bank, and they don't really care what we think.

Animatrix was actually quite good. The stories were (mostly) on par with the first matrix movie, it's just missing the ground-breaking special effects because it's animated.

I played through the first single player game as well, it was ok. Never touched the MMORPG'r though, or it's "path of neo" re-hash.

Quentin Tarantino's Top 20 Favorite Movies Since 1993

spoco2 says...

I like this list of films a lot. Not particularly because of the actual films on it, there are plenty I haven't seen. But because he never feels the need to kowtow to what people expect to be on these lists and put artsy or 'meaningful' films on there.

These are films that HE has really enjoyed, that HE found entertaining and well made.

Get stuffed to anyone who gets angry over this list, it's HIS bloody OPINION.

If you don't like it, please, post your top 20 since 1992 and let other people pick it apart.

Oh, and I COMPLETELY am on his side with the Matrix... EXACTLY as he says it for me... the first film would have so held up so much better, and my opinion of the Wachowski Brothers would have been SO much higher had they stopped there. By making the other two they demonstrated how they had pretty much put all their good ideas in one movie, and had run out in that area.

There is something to be said for leaving things to the imagination, and the Matrix 2 and 3 are shining examples of how trying to present those things can ruin the overall. (Much like Episodes 1, 2 and 3 of Star Wars & the special editions of the originals really)

Matrix Catfight [Cat vs. Many many Puppies]

rychan says...

The Matrix sequels and the Star Wars prequels were products of a similar situation -- very creative people (Wachowski brothers, Lucas) who were too successful for their own good and didn't have someone to exercise editorial control and tell them no. Those types of people need a filter.

The Matrix sequels and Star Wars prequels were 80% to 90% good movies. If only someone had stepped in and said "no Midichlorians, no Jar-Jar, less Lincoln Park worthy teenage angst, no "soft, not like sand", and no slaughtering a legion of rainbow Skittles jedis for no reason.

But the opening of attack of the clones and Darth Maul's duels in the phantom menace were fantastic. The chase scene in reloaded was great. The machine swarm breaking down the defenses of Zion was captivating.
