Bob Kramer Makes a Damascus Blade out of Steel Cable

AeroMechanical says...

I believe he is wearing eye protection. Regular looking glasses with polycarbonate lenses are cool with OSHA for most (non splashy chemical) things. You should have the little side protection blinder thingies (can't tell if he does), but I don't believe it's necessary.

Just moved to Seattle, I feel like I missed out on something.

He really was a huge Seattle icon since the 1950's. You should go and check out his statue located in Fremont [and don't forget the Fremont Troll under the Aurora Bridge if you do].
Each channel had their own kid's show. KOMO had Captain Puget [he was a bit dry for my taste]. KING had Stan Boreson who played the accordion and had pets [basset hounds Slo-Mo and No-Mo]. KSTW had Brakeman Bill who had sidekick named Crazy Donkey. It was fun growing up here. =o)

I live in the U District so I'll have to bike on over...too bad I missed the Solstice Nude thingie.

Camp stove generates electricity for USB charging

GeeSussFreeK says...

@bmacs27 Cell phones don't launch you to a higher standard of living more than a fully integrated energy system. Refrigeration, transportation, fertilizer, steel production, manufacturing, iron ore reprocessing, food production, water purification, medicine distribution/production/manufacture ect. These things require TONS of energy, something a cellphone charger stove is not. A phone charging stove, IMO, will confer very little improvement to the standard of living to the their world. "Worthwhile" is a pretty arbitrary idea, though, so there isn't a "right" answer per say. But I would wager greater quality of life would be had if you used all the money from these stove thingies into an energy infrastructure; having access to clean water and a electrical grid might be better than a marginally cleaner stove.

Particulate matter is usually the risk associated with burning coals and woods from coal and wood ash. Greenhouse isn't the issue (the CO2 in plants will go back into the air via decomposition), it is the junk that goes into your lungs. Less is good, but electric stoves (or gas) would be better as you can move the source of smoke to some distant place. I don't know the economics of small village towns, so perhaps this has a place as a stopgap until there is serious economic development, but it isn't a very big step...so I am trying some googlefu to see how much they plan to spend over there on these. If it is like 10k bucks or something, then ya, those 200 people or so you help is niceish, if they plan to spend millions, or they are charging them instead of handing them out, then other developments would be far better. As someone who has burned wood to heat a house as the primary source, it isn't fun, even if it was 50% better, using money to buy a better stove would of been silly compared to just using gas or electric provided there was an system for doing so. I think money would be better spent developing those systems instead of vesting money in a dead end technology (burning wood). One might liken it to fixing up that old car that keeps breaking down, it is a money trap...best to go get a better car if you could.

Even so, I think I might get one in the future for camping. Could be fun to mess with the TEG and main container to perhaps tweak some higher power levels out of it!

The Last Crusade - best Movie + Computer Game combo ever!

Anyhow:
What would have made this clip really epic is if he had bad things to say about Uncharted too, and it would all be cut in context of the "Crystal Skull" thingy that some (fools) claim to be an Indy movie.

There are Three movies made featuring Indiana Jones, and Two featuring Mad Max.

FOX explains $4 gas when Bush was president

That printing money thing sounded reasonable to me so I looked up currencies for backup. Being in Ireland where the price of petrol is the equivalent of 8.33 USD per gallon which my driving friends tell me is up about 25% these past 6 months it seemed like a global thing to me. ANYWAY.

I found a cool applet for showing historical exchange rates.
Really neat exchange rate thingy
I found it informative to take base as USD and the foreign exchanges as Euro, GBP & Chinese Yuan

These websites show historical oil prices for all those currencies:

Oil_vs_USD

Oil_vs_EUR

Oil_vs_GBP

Oil_vs_CNY

I looked at 180 days history for the above graphs.

As you can see, all the oil price graphs have a similar shape and have indeed gone up about 25% for all currencies. Also, you can see that none of the currencies have moved very much with respect to the USD. So yeah, either they're all printing money (CHINA DOES NOT NEED TO, for defs, yo) or the oil prices are not cos America's printing money.

I did actually look for counter-examples in surging economies but even AUD and CAD show the same jump. If anything, that the exchange rates wrt these countries have gone down and the commodity price of oil has gone up for all of them at a similar rate is a positive for the states.

So yeah, I don't accept your hypothesis.
>> ^bobknight33:

Sounds right. Presidents don't have control of gas prices as the left blamed Bush back when he was president. But there is a big difference between Obama and other presidents.

Under this administration there have been massive amount of printing money. Remember QE1, QE2 and possible QE3 have done nothing except debase our currency which has caused inflation. Gas prices will not come down to any great extent but will only go up along with everything else.

First of all I would like to give this MAN the Iron Balls of the Year Award.

Second of all: The form of presentation was magnificent. There is no reasonable arguing about that. I really enjoy the fact that he is using profanity to express his utter hatred for those officers who arrested him, without getting aggressive at all. The neutral manner in which he performs is what makes this vid so fucking brilliant.

Speech of the year. At least concerning the whole OWS thingy...

Ruin - Post-Apocalyptic Short CGI Film

raverman jokingly says...

INDEED.

I for one would like an in depth discussion on the realism of this animated featurette so i don't feel so inadequate that i have no ability to make anything anywhere near as talented as this.

- the pulse rockets on the chasing missile thingies don't seem to be adequate to keep them aloft
- They aren't positioned centrally balanced to stop them crashing into the ground immediately.
- They also would run out of fuel and would never be able to go fast enough to catch a motor bike.
- He appeared to have magical LED implants in his hands and we all know that noone has these.
- The flying ship hovered on two small rotors which clearly would not be large enough to fly a armoured vessel carrying ammunition of this type.
- Electro cutting swords don't exist.
- Plunging it into the "head" of a drone probably wont kill it as sensor arrays are more likely to be at the front rather than central flight and control circuitry.
- how did he get to the top of the building as elevators would no longer be working.
- How did he get down to ground level again so fast, it seems like only a minute.
- honestly i could go on but i feel much better about myself already.

Some people say that failing to enjoy something because i couldn't relax and accept suspension of disbelief is my problem - but i think if everything i watch themed on a fictional setting isn't 100% accurate and researched then not enough attention has been paid to avoid me from ranting pointlessly on and on and on!
