SpaceX Iridium 4 Launch from Alhambra, CA

BSR says...

I lived in Cape Canaveral for 35 years. I watched all but 5 shuttle launches and many Delta, Atlas and other rockets. Each unique in it's own way. This launch was spectacular in that the lighting helped illuminate the plume in a way that normally is unseen in a bright sky or total darkness.

Another cool effect when conditions are right during a launch is when a rocket breaks the sound barrier while penetrating thin clouds. It creates what's known as a Sun Dog. The shock wave creates a ripple effect that resembles ripples going across the surface of water. The effect at night can be illuminated by the rocket's bright plume rather than the sun.

Star Citizen Gamescon 2016

Digitalfiend says...

I never bought into Star Citizen's hype and crazy stretch goals but it is nice to see how far they've finally come. Star Citizen is starting to look like how I always wanted games like Frontier, Starflight, and Sun Dog to play. I grew up on the Wing Commander/Freelancer universe and do love all the detail they are pouring into this. I just hope I'm still alive when it's finally a fully realized product.

Greetings, sir. I'm looking for some advice - I have a video in my to-promote playlist which is in the same category as http://videosift.com/poll/Should-Sneaky-Scumbag-Spammer-Self-Links-Stay (only a different self linker) http://videosift.com/video/Halo-Sun-Dog-in-Moscow

The precedent seems to be that all the self-linking vids ought to be discarded, so would you recommend that I discard that vid myself (assuming I can?) and re-post my own fixed embed myself? Or just ignore the problem and promote anyway? Or... banhammer the user with *spammer?

Awesome. Did anyone else find themselves trying to scroll up or down to move the camera when the rocket was going off-screen? That's just one of those flukes of using technology a little too much. Like when something shitty happens to me and I try to downvote it.

Or like in one of those shampoo commercials when the chick (or guy in your case) is shampooing her hair in the shower and you stand up so you can try to look down past the bottom of the screen?

So the sonic boom caused ice crystals to form in circular patterns causing the sun dog?

The ice crystals and sundog were already there as visible by the prismatic effect that becomes visible on the right at 1:51. The sonic boom created the ripples through those crystal clouds.

ahh, thanks

yeah, similar to 'sun dogs', just icey cirrus clouds, atara is right... chillaxe everybody.

I remember talking with an old professor one early evening and as the sun was setting there were two 'sun dogs' on each side, so I pointed them out to him and was surprised to learn that this 65 year old dude had never seen something like that before. Interesting how one person can miss something another thought was so common.
