Do you think this concept could be adapted to be useful? Perhaps if it was a wide cylinder instead of a sphere it could sweep, for example, a 3 meter stripe instead of just a meandering deer trail.

The much attested "fair tax rate" is a red herring frequently used by politicians of all stripes. A flat rate is "fair" by some measure. Hell, even a flat amount (eg $5000/year) is "fair". Progressive brackets like we have now and an even more drastically progressive taxes are also "fair" by certain measure.

This is all hollow rhetoric written to make you feel as if disagreeing with the speaker is unfair, wrong, immoral. We don't need a fair tax rate; we need an effective, sustainable tax rate whether it's 9% across the board or 0%-80% based on income brackets.

As I was watching this I noticed her striped top slipping down and started the usual male, dirty-minded, internal exploration of 'what-would-it-look-like-if-the-rest-of-her-clothes-also...".

This is interesting. If it's a fake, they're not using the mouse. You can see the mouse in the reflection of the screen... the silver stripe can be seen... it's near the corner of the keyboard, and it winds up behind the "R" in the word "Wallpaper" on the screen when the flash is popped. There is no hand on the mouse. Also the message that pops up in the lower right makes it seem like the background is real and not just a couple JPGs being switched between.

On another board someone theorized that maybe the flash wreaked havoc with the LCD crystals themselves. Nope, it wouldn't knock out just the right half of the screen with a straight line down the middle.

Better theories:
Could a small EMP from the flash damage a chip behind the screen if it were right near the flash? Notice how close they put it to the screen. Maybe there is a separate driver of some sort for the right and left halves of the display. Maybe the light sensor that keeps the brightness comfortable in different lighting conditions produced a spike Asus never saw before in testing, and knocked out a chip. Possibly only temporarily.

It'd be interesting to know if anyone else has tried this, or if Asus has responded to it.

It's just the picture placement under those blue stripes - there's four of them. Though, it is fitting since the story has to do with WWII remembrance.

Serious question - do Americans respond well to things like that flag in the background?

Speaking only for myself, I find it rather tacky. We have the flag attached to so many selfish purposes on a daily basis that it took until my mid-twenties for me to realize that it's a symbol that should give me a sense of pride or value.

I do suppose it's fitting for a presidential race, but I'd rather something more subdued -- the traditional label pin is fine. Plastering every news room, pro athlete, domestic beer, Ford/Chevy truck, rock band, country singer and golden age comic hero with stars and stripes has left me with a serious case of patriotism fatigue.
