Tom Laughton - Wonder 2

newtboy says...

Awesome! I wanna see.

Just like this, or the single piece version? This, as far as I can tell, is just a realistic 3d render of something he hasn’t made (yet). I like the double helix effect.

That must have cost them quite a pretty penny. The artist has the shape copywritten and trademarked I believe, both the physical and digital versions, and he sells the regular 30cm tall tabletop version for $1900.00!

I hope your neighbor didn’t copy his design without paying him a royalty, that could get really expensive.

Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex

cloudballoon says...

The visuals would be trashed by a video gamer players if this is served as an in-game footage in 2022 on PC/consoles. I feel only Gozilla's rendering and movements felt natural. Everything else is pretty bad and unexciting. The city... I think even Microsft Flight Simulator got better models and more "lived-in" than this. Need more realistic filters and more sirens/screaming BGN at the minimum.

kir_mokum says...

HA!

this img wasn't generated by a computer. altered [slightly], yes, but filters ≠ CGI. blurring an img, using a blue filter, or cropping an image does not make it "CGI". you can argue the semantics of if it being "generated" by a computer, but arguing it is means all digital photos, images, hell even text of any kind are "CGI". "CGI" is already a stupid, near meaningless term and pushing the definition to "any image that appears or had appeared on a computer in any way" makes it even less useful. [generally VFX/visual effects is the umbrella term people are looking for. CG is the term if they're referring to rendered assets. this is neither. this poor use of language is a huge pet peeve for me.]

imma ignore the "art" argument because that is regularly a black hole of silly and i don't feel the need to engage that but those painted potatoes more effort than this.

newtboy said:

I respect your right to be wrong if you wish. 😉

An image generated by a computer is CGI, it doesn’t have to be Avatar to qualify.
Art is art, whether you like and respect it or not. It doesn’t have to be good to be art.
People in England are painting potatoes, inserting some painted nails, and calling it potato art. This took more effort to make than that does, but they are still art just as much as a 3 year old’s drawing or a fresco by Michelangelo is.

Surveillance video of Brightline crash

newtboy says...

Holy shit, man. Look at yourself.

It stopped because it severely injured and/or killed some people, and the only right thing to do is stop, check on them, and render aid if required.

Now think about the waste of skin you have to be to need that pointed out.

Vote While It Counts

luxintenebris jokingly says...

have an alternative theory...

you perceive to be correct w/o any challenge. or accept any challenge.

bob the bubble boy.

i get it: that's what being 'red' is. you are part of the one.

it's like your all one people, encamped under one euphonious dogma. no deviation. no discourse. becoming one body w/one mind.

ultimately: resembling a prisoner placed in solitary confinement. time is methodically rendering the one's gray matter into pudding.

no wonder why crt, statures, masks, vaccines, seeing dead people at the polls - can trip y'all out. it's like being on acid and your choice of media is playing w/ya'...

[cheech - aka bob - being soothed first w/"you know better" from chong - Fox News & ilk - then NAAAWWWGH!!! weirded out by the news that black people are making it to the voting rolls! ]

...duckery for sure.

5200 Drone light show, Breaking 4 World Records - High Great

StukaFox says...

If you watch this and feel anything but complete terror, you're missing the point. An AI controlled drone swarm is a military nightmare: you can blind radar; shut down comms; interrupt C3 at a crucial moment.

The things that can be done with a thousand cheap drones and some basic AI can render billion-dollar military systems moot in the event of real combat. The US Navy is already shitting themselves over this (there's already been a few incidents, most recently off the coast of San Diego), and the USAF isn't far behind. Serious drones incidents -- from unknown attackers -- have happened in the US. This including an attempted attack on a power station and a bizarre cat-and-mouse game between USBP/HLS and an unidentified "super drone" over Arizona on more than one occasion.

Did you notice what they were displaying? This wasn't meant to be oo-aah cute, this was China telling the US military they fuck around at their own risk. The last time someone sent a message this clearly, Billy Mitchell was flying a biplane over a captured German destroyer.

"Far less chance for severe mishaps, too" -- I know you meant something totally different, but in the case of what I'm talking about, the exact opposite holds true.

cloudballoon said:

These drones light shows are feeling samey-samey real fast, no "wow" factor anymore to me just like fireworks, though they can convey any messages (propaganda?) far more clearly and inventively if done right. But at least these drones get reused events after events. Hopefully the environmental impact is less than fireworks at the end of the their days.

Far less chance of severe mishaps too.

Can't use emojis in video submissions? (Wtf Talk Post)

lucky760 says...

@ant Looks like the body of your ST post got truncated.

You should be able to include emojis in the body of video posts.

If you included any in a video and they're not getting rendered as emoji, please link me there and I'll take a look!

Thanks!

Notre Dame Faculty Pens Open Letter To Delay Hearings

Mordhaus says...

As an aside, the last time this was brought up it was in the late 30's.

"Aside from President Franklin Roosevelt’s ill-fated threat in 1937 to add new Justices who sympathized with his policies to the Supreme Court, the number of Justices on the Court has remained stable.

Roosevelt was particularly upset by the Court’s 1935 decision in Schechter Poultry Corp. v. United States. The unanimous decision invalidated a key part of the National Industrial Recovery Act, one of the projects passed during FDR's 100-day program in 1933. President Roosevelt did not mince words a week later when he talked to the press. “You see the implications of the decision. That is why I say it is one of the most important decisions ever rendered in this country,” Roosevelt told reporters on May 31, 1935. “We have been relegated to the horse-and-buggy definition of interstate commerce.”

As Roosevelt started his second term, he used one of his fireside chats in March 1937 to make his case to the American people for adding more Justices to the Supreme Court who agreed with him. “This plan of mine is not attacking of the court; it seeks to restore the court to its rightful and historic place in our system of constitutional government and to have it resume its high task of building anew on the Constitution ‘a system of living law.’ The court itself can best undo what the court has done,” Roosevelt said.

The legislation struggled to gain traction and it was opposed not only by Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes but also by Justice Louis Brandeis and members of Roosevelt’s Democratic Party."

Jessica Alba @ Hot Ones, with novel cooling methods

Capsaicin ---from no less than Cook's Illustrated

"Milk had only a slight impact. What worked on both the skin and the mouth? Hydrogen peroxide.

It turns out that peroxide reacts with capsaicin molecules, changing their structure and rendering them incapable of bonding with our receptors. Peroxide works even better in the presence of a base like baking soda:

We found that a solution of 1/8 teaspoon of baking soda, 1 tablespoon of water, and 1 tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide could be used to wash the affected area or as a mouthwash (swish vigorously for 30 seconds) to tone down a chile’s stinging burn to a mild warmth. (Toothpaste containing peroxide and baking soda is a somewhat less effective remedy.) Always keep peroxide, baking soda, and toothpaste away from your eyes."

Naval Assault Suit Trials

bremnet says...

Too bad they called it "Assault" - now folks think warfare. How about dropping in to tight spots in rescue situations? Or getting medical aid to stranded / injured folks in remote or inaccessible by foot locations - don't need to dispatch a helo, drive to the closest spot and fly in, render aid, wait on support/helo to lift you out. If I had one, it'd be for 1) party entrances and 2) scaring kids.

The Designoid Dimension - mindblowing 3D fractal animation

FlowersInHisHair says...

This is 100% fractals. It's rendered in a program called "Mandelbulb 3D" with some post-production in AfterEffects. The artist has some nice tutorials on his channel!
