Last Week Tonight - Ferguson and Police Militarization

Stormsinger says...

I've known at least two cases of people who made threats over the internet, who were absolute psychos and probably wouldn't have bothered with threats at all had they been able to be there in person. They'd have simply shown up with their blowtorch and baseball bat.
The fact that threats are made over the internet means diddly-squat. Threats were made, that's the only part that matters.

dannym3141 said:

Seriously? Threatening someone over the internet is a sign of the kind of person who has a lot of front but no follow up. The kind of person that might try to intimidate someone but immediately relieve themselves in their trousers when they get called out on it. A weak person with a complex about inadequacy.

Having now watched the video, it fills me with dread to know that there are people like @lantern53 and @bobknight33 that would, with their head held high, say that they stand with the kind of police that i just saw say, on video, "bring it you animals" in any context to anyone or anything.

Doctor Disobeys Gun Free Zone -- Saves Lives Because of It

gwiz665 says...

It's largely a practical matter. Getting a gun into an building that doesn't allow guns is easy, if the surrounding country has it legal. It's quite a bit harder to get it from country to country. In countries where it is generally more difficult to get a gun, the crazy fruit cakes won't get one. A full on psycho can still obtainit ,like Breivik, but john q bullybutt will have issues shooting up his school.

Guns are not good. In the same way that we shouldn't be swinging swords around unless Ina controlled environment. I love that Americans are the only god damned people who honestly and vehemently defend guns when it's so painfully obvious that they're terrible. Same thing with pick up trucks, but that's a different rant.

Trancecoach says...

Um.. no...

But... okay....

So how would you make the law more "decent?"

And what evidence do you have that the "decency" of the law (any law!) prevents "psycho boys" from doing whatever the law prohibits (but doesn't preclude the "heros" from saving lives in spite of it)? Hm?

billpayer said:

Err.. no... because if there were DECENT GUN LAWS, psycho boy patient would NEVER HAVE HAD ACCESS TO A GUN...

Trancecoach said:

Well, "reducing firearm ownership" in this case would have resulted in more death, not less.

So, Yeah!!!
Let's all try to make it harder for the "good" (i.e., law-abiding) "heros" to get guns by making them more illegal than they already are, more difficult to get and conceal, and more difficult to carry!

That'll certainly prevent this from ever happening again!

Good! Thinking!

billpayer says...

For every 'hero' with a gun, there are 100 dipshits who would accidentally kill innocent bystanders, have their weapon used by a child or robber, or go psycho and try to kill people.

It's a FACT that reducing firearm ownership reduces death by firearms.

12 Monkeys - The TV Series - Official Trailer

Lilithia says...

I love the movie 'Psycho' and I was skeptical of the TV show 'Bates Motel' before it aired. I love the movie 'Red Dragon' and I was skeptical of the TV show 'Hannibal' before it aired. Both shows turned out to be brilliant and are among my favorites now. So, I recommend waiting until a show actually aired before judging it (in most cases). I love the movie '12 Monkeys' and I'm looking forward to finding out if the show will be any good.

reactions to the mountain viper fight GoT - spoilers

Chairman_woo says...

This scene is pretty close to how it goes down in the book, save a little variation in how the final blow is administered.

I also completely disagree, I think the director completely nailed it. It plays up to a lifetime of predictable cliché's only to turn them right around and give us a dose of cold hard reality.

Hero's frequently loose, villains frequently win, overconfidence is a weakness and having a just cause is no guarantee of victory.

Oberyn wins the fight but allows his need for vengeance to cloud his judgement. He starts calm and works himself into more and more of a frenzy over a neurosis he has carried for many years. IMHO this was portrayed pretty authentically, he starts calm (as he has learned to be) but as the fight progresses he allows the guard to drop and the raging emotions to manifest properly.

Now he can afford to let these bottled up feeling out properly, the mountain is right there and soon he will kill him! Throw in some adrenaline and the anticipation of that moment overwhelms the self control that earned him the title red viper.

I also don't see how you can describe the mountain as a "super ninja" here. Everything he does at the end is an exercise in brute strength, let's not forget he's wearing mailed fists, the blow to the mouth need not be especially strong or quick to do the damage. All he does after that is roll on top of him with the last bit of strength and rage he has (spurred on by his "beetle crushing" fuck everything mindset). Subsequently crushing the skull has more to do with his upper body weight as his hands alone.

A massive strong man yanks someone's legs out from under them, punches them in the mouth and then climbs on top (while they are stunned) to finish the job.

Being run through doesn't necessarily stop one's muscles from working until the blood loss kicks in. Doubly so with the adrenaline of a life or death fight (and the anaesthetic effect massive trauma has on the nervous system). There are countless stories of soldiers and criminals being mortally wounded by multiple shots to the chest who continued attacking till the blood loss overcame them. Gregor Clegane is exactly the sort of psycho who might exhibit such bloody minded behaviour.

I might also remind you that the Mountain has one more than one occasion been described as "swifter than might be expected for a man of such stature" i.e. not a lumbering hulk. He gets several blows in on Oberyn during the fight. Many of the swings are extremely heavy but they are calculated moves from an expert fighter who is more than capable of moving quickly when needed.

Oberyn is quicker, but the Mountain is not exactly slow (that's one of the reasons why the Mountain is/was formerly undefeated, he's big but can still move relatively quickly for his size).

harlequinn said:

That's fair enough. I haven't read the books but the tv version butchered this scene in so many ways.

Up front note: nobody should be surprised Oberyn died - it's GOT - it's to be expected.

That said, I wish the director wouldnt have.... Oberyn (an experienced fighter) be cool as ice before the fight just to turn into a emotional wreck a few seconds into the fight.

Don't show us the Mountain as a lumbering hulk who then, after being fully run through with a spear twice and having a calf slashed, turn into a super ninja while Oberyn makes a beginners mistake and turns into a sloth.

The director going comic book bad guys on us sucked.

How Mass Murders Should NOT Be Covered By The Media

AeroMechanical says...

I'd say that once someone as committed mass murder, we no longer need to be so politically correct. Terms like "psycho," "maniac" and "lunatic" are perfectly fine. I believe it would be helpful to draw a firmer line between the typically harmless mentally ill people who deserve sympathy and support and those who have crossed the line to become irredeemable violent psychopaths.

Oh, and Stormsinger, I think the name you're looking for is probably "Johnson."

attack on titan episode 1 english

RedSky says...

The show started very well but felt like it went nowhere from about a third of the way through. Certainly a lot better than most new shows nowadays but that isn't saying much. Kinda glad it's getting a second season, not sure if I'll watch it.

Thought Psycho Pass (also from last year) was much stronger show and generally more interesting from a conceptual point of view. Really enjoying new Mushishi at the moment.

Robbery Fail

Seems kind of monstrous to lock your employee in with a knife wielding psycho just to prevent him from stealing some cash. Maybe there's something I'm missing, but I agree with modulous that she doesn't seem to be protected by anything.

Rescued Laboratory Beagles See The World For The First Time

Payback says...

Ya, Healthy dogs are more useful than psycho, deranged ones. I'm sure the companies had dog handlers that probably interacted with them daily.

Still, even if there was an attempt at "humane" treatment. The whole situation is complete Bullshit. I'm all for experimenting on pedophiles. That's ok. I don't care if they're sick. Have this "punishment" in line for them if they commit, and no consequences if they seek help before.

draak13 said:

Despite the horror story that people told in the description that reminisces of 1950's experimentation, all of these dogs are very well socialized, and understand how to play with other dogs and humans very well. They don't seem like they were subjected to the conditions described.

THIS SITE IS A JOKE (Comedy Talk Post)

BoneRemake says...

@chingalara

Your logic is flawed and your words stink of poisonous vomit !

lets keep this fight going ! <--- as in that is all this turned into is one big pissy man boy match Edit - not even that, just one person in particular who was side tracking and making personal attacks in comments again, see how you can enjoy the double standard like everyone else choggie ? You' re here still after your little freak out in the sift talk, or the stuff you wrote above or the other day, you can enjoy it like everyone else, but you sure like to flip the coin and berate it at the same time, although we all have learned you lack logic and reasoning skills. But that is just my opinion,
I guess this is what comments this post are for hey ? pretty well the reason I am writing this now. write what you want time.

So to answer your only sensible question fuckinglittlethingoverthere - as you described it the first time I asked you what it meant. Baxter the bunny weights in at 2.76 pounds.. and just jumped on my lap. I have learned this is not for pets though, this is for treats. so I do not try and pet him because he just swats lightly very very quickly at my finger tips and actually kinda growls a little, which makes me laugh.

He is fully grown and if I were to cook him like a psycho would cook their pet, as you suggested he would be like eating a quarter of a small frying chicken ( NOte to self *do not put palm plant fronds near top of chair - rabbit climbs chair and eats palm leaf* )

Also I do not think video sift is what that orignal poster said it is.

Two Excellent Examples Of How Gun Control Can And Does Work

JustSaying says...

Wow.
That's super stupid, dude. I really don't want to insult you here BUT (yes, every asshole got one) what you wrote there is so much beyond silly or naive, there's no other word for it.
Let's cut the crap here, what you imply with "black youth" is gangmembers, right? We're talking gangs and gang violence. Well, these guys don't walk into a gun store and just buy their Glocks with a credit card. Most of them would probably buy them in illegal ways (because commiting crimes with guns licensed in your name is dumb) so gun legislation has not such an big impact on them anyways.
What the gun laws impact and what causes people to get upset and demanding more regulation is when "black youths" who are armed with skittles and ice tea get shot by scared "latin middleageds". It's when psychologically damaged, middleclass, white teens take their parents guns to school to each everyone a lesson, as seen in Columbine or Newtown. That's why people want regulation.
Criminals will always have access to guns, they don't have to rely on the NRA's uncanny ability to block all progress. Criminals is not who you have to worry here.
It's the dipshits and psychos. The schoolshoters, the parents that aren't able to keep their guns from their kids, the idiots who can't clean a gun while it's unloaded, people who have to stand their ground in the face of loud music, they're the problem. The so called responsible gun owners.

I don't care for your racism and even less for this weird and idiotic idea that black people with their violent music are the problematic aspect of american gun culture. Not everbody should have a gun, some people are simply not responsible enought for it and not all kinds of guns need to be available either. Or are you trying to tell me now that the Bushmaster .223 caliber XM15-E2S rifle is designed for hunting?

lantern53 said:

So what you are saying is that the lawmakers are bowing to NRA lobbyists and not passing laws that would disarm black youth.

I'd love to know what laws would disarm black youth.
