Say what you want about Trump, and fuck knows I despise the illiterate, racist, sexist, homophobic, moron... but he totally deserved person of the year. The exact same way Hitler did.

And there's no way in hell Sanders would win as an independent, at least, not until you fix your thoroughly broken electoral system.

Please, Sanders, run as an independent...you'll win by the biggest margin ever.

O'Reilly Can’t Believe Polls: Bernie Crushes Republicans

newtboy says...

?
It's clearly in Fox's interest to push for Bernie only because Democrats are likely to vote for Hillary if they think Fox wants them to vote for Bernie, and Fox/Republicans do far better if Hillary is the candidate, both in the presidential election and all other seats up for grabs. Not only will she get fewer Democrats to come out to vote, the Republican base will come out to vote against Hillary in larger numbers than they would against Sanders, just out of personal hatred from years of seeing her demonized by their leaders.

noims said:

This is the main reason for me not to believe those numbers.

If Bernie is less likely to beat Hillary then it's in Fox news' best interest to push for Bernie to win the nomination.

... of course I'm feeling quite cynical right now.

World War Two Movie Making Gone Wrong

My observations as someone who drives pretty much all the time but has spent some time on a bike (all being in the San Francisco bay area in Calif.)
In general people who are incompetent asshole drivers (ones who don't obey the law and drive in a dangerous manner) also tend to be incompetent asshole cyclist. Assholes are assholes regardless of mode of transportation. I also think that when a driver sees a cyclist do something unsafe it makes an impression that they dont forget as conflicts are a rare occurrence (compared to conflict with other automobiles)and tends to stand out in ones mind. However I find that every time i drive across town or down to the local market I see multiple people (in cars) tailgating ,driving to fast, running lights, not using signals, generally being unsafe. Thing is we accept this as being pretty normal so it doesn't make as much of an impression. Just business as usual.
Being on a bike for me makes me hyper aware of my surroundings as I realize one mistake by an automobile can cost me dearly. When driving in my comfortable bubble of an automobile not so much.
Also in MY(exclusive to my personal experience) many years of being on this planet ive not once irl known a cyclist who condemn motorist for driving automobiles. Thinking they are somehow better for riding a bike(its always drivers who say that about cyclists). Most peeps i know that ride bikes do so because they love it and don't give two shits about what you do.

-edit-
Just annoys me that people are so quick to point out some reckless cyclist when they have little or nothing to say about the epidemic that is horrible unsafe driving(at least in California) that we seem to accept.

Bill Nye: Creationism Is Just Wrong!

@shinyblurry Radiometric data is based on uniformitarian assumptions.

Also vice versa. Which might sound circular, but isnt. Uniformitarianism is of course the simplest assumtion (occams razor) but it also correlates well with the available evidence. If natural laws acted differently in the past, we would presumably find EVIDENCE that it did. And correlating data is not a "hall of mirrors, it is evidence of correlation. This is basic statistics and empiri.

Suppose you didnt know anything about humans, and you wanted to know how long they lived in earth years. Now suppose you had a sample of 3:

Person 1: 3 years old
Person 2: 43 years old
Person 3: 81 years old.

Now, from this very limited dataset, Your conclusions about the human race would almost certainly be wrong. From the mean of 42,3 there is a standard deviation of 39, which means that you'd assume that only 68% would be less than 80 years old. You'd reckon that 95% would be less than 140 years old etc.
In other words: Pretty useless.

But if you had the age of, say, 10000 random people, things would start to look very different. From such a dataset, you could see that there would be a very steep drop-off rate above 80, with noone above 110 or so, and so you could start making qualified guesses, in fact, they would no longer be guesses, but conclusions based on data.

And this is where we are with fossils and dating. We dont just make wild guesses on the basis of 2 or 3 fossils and one shitty chemistry experiment involving half-lives; We have literally thousands of datapoints. If this is a hall of mirrors, then Satan is truly one crafty bastard making a pretty impressive one for us.

'CNN Arabic' Poll Grants Assad 'Personality of the Year 2009' Title
The readers of the website CNNArabic.com chose Syrian President Bashar Assad as the "Personality of the Year 2009" with a 67% of total votes after winning 20,687 votes out of 30,679.
CNN Arabic considered that the improvement of Syrian-Lebanese relations and the recent visit of Lebanon's PM Saad Hariri to Syria helped in making Assad a key player in the region.

The website added that at the end of the year, Assad reaped the fruits he had sown in its beginning. It said that Assad's participation in Doha's emergency summit of the Arab League during the Gaza War helped in boosting his popularity.

Could it be that Assad was too popular for his own good?

Tea Party: Only Property Owners Should Be Allowed To Vote

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

Given the recent issues in the housing market I'm not so sure that owning property is a clear sign of intelligence.

True enough. But keep in mind that the entire housing bubble fiasco was not traditional home ownership. It was more like government subsidized leasing. There was very little 'traditional ownership' going on in the housing bubble unless you were smart.

That said, responsible home ownership tells a lot about a person. I bought one affordable property at a good rate and stuck with it from 1997 to present so I own a two-story single-family unit that costs me less than renting a dumpy apartment (and I'll pay off in half the term). Compare that to the typical housing boom property flipper, banker, or the government. Out of all the above parties - which one proved they have a decent head on their shoulders?

There's no trick, gimmick, secret, or political free-lunch that makes a person have 12+ years of reliability and trustworthiness. It isn't difficult but it does require personal morality, common sense, work, and discipline. It isn't a flashy life, but it is worthwhile. The reward? Personal security, total independance, and being the kind of guy you would trust with the key to your house, to drive your car, to sleep in the same room as your wife - and to render a good VOTE. There are a lot of people that shouldn't be voting because they have proven track records of abuse, failure, short-sightedness, and incompetence - and this includes people across a lot of spectra.

It's actually a style; a kinetic editing style that adds energy to the delivery.

Monologuing for 8 minutes can be a killer. It's very hard to keep up energy and proper deliver for that time. Watching a monologue for that long can be especially brutal. You've probably never seen an 8 minute monologue in any movie or television show you've ever seen.

Speaking engagingly, by oneself, for extended periods of time is something that radio talk show hosts are often adept at. Politicians occasionally are. Professional speakers usually are. Even actors (film, not so much stage) can have a hard time not breaking character or flubbing a line or losing energy in an 8 minute scene. Youtube posters are usually not professionals in these fields. They have day jobs and do this as a hobby. They try to make it as entertaining as they can for you & play down their weak points.

It's not that they're incapable of memorizing an 8 minute rant (though I'm sure some are), but it takes a special person, and many years of experience, to be able to be engaging for that long.

This editing style also lets the performer assume multiple roles much more easily. It's not the case here, but if you watch, say, Michael Swaim on Cracked TV or this Ze Frank video on Scrabble, you're understand what I mean.>> ^xxovercastxx:

I had to look away to make it through this. Why can't anyone on YouTube read a prepared speech without having cuts every 2 second anymore?

Psychochemical Dumbing-Down of Society

curiousity says...

I think that many factors assist people staying in stasis regarding the development of their mind and person beyond their current state.

Many of these factors having nothing to do with conspiracy, but simply trying to reach the lowest common denominator. I guess the prime example that comes to mind is TV. The vast majority of the airtime is for entertainment or to sell you things, not to broaden your mind. I must admit that I don't watch TV anymore, but I have a few weaknesses for a few shows that I'll watch online and Videosift allows me a peek into that world (And yes, as soon as I get that side-business up and running, I'll become a charter member again.)

Fluoride has some benefit, but only topical application has been proven useful for adults. The main argument for children is that it becomes part of their adult teeth which makes them stronger. I don't mind the fluoride treatment at the dentist's office. HA... I remember a great laugh I had when I went to a new dentist. The assistant said they were going to do a fluoride treatment to which I responded, "I listen to late night AM radio. You're not going to get me with your mind control!" The look on her face was simply precious. I let her know that I was joking and we moved on. Putting that aside, I tend to avoid fluoride outside of the dentist's office. Oh I just did a google search... I use a Brita filter and looks that that doesn't remove it at all. Well, I'll look into that later.

I remember when I was talking with a counselor several years ago, he was surprised about how I was talking about wanting to actively work on growing more mentally and emotionally mature. He said he had been a counselor for many years and this was a common occurrence back in the 60s and 70s, but these days most people only go the the counselor when they have something "broken" that they have to fix. An emotional triple-bypass, if you will.

As for vaccines, I don't care for them much, but I had them forced down my throat in the military. Luckily, I was able to get out of the anthrax vaccine because they ran out and then the 3 marine guys were successful in temporarily halting it because it was never approved by the FDA. I don't think I've had a vaccine since I've got out. I'm not dead set against them, but mercury isn't a good thing for you. I'm sure a small bit would be fine, but the amount and frequency of vaccine shots people/children are supposed to get these days surely can't be good. If it was something dangerous and I was going into an area known for it or if their was an outbreak - I'd take it. But I'm personally against the yearly flu vaccine.

Alright, look. I had alot of good info down here. But the HTML links caused my browser to dislike the width of the comment boxes. I had to do some digging in order to figure out how to edit the comment without an edit option on my screen.

So I looked at the source (firebug) and found the Anchor that the edit button used and followed that link. Viola fixed.
