How Sergeant-At-Arms Kevin Vickers stopped Ottawa shooter

The boys wish they could throw like a girl

AeroMechanical says...

That's awesome. Since 13 is typically the middle-to-beginning of puberty for girls and, assuming she has control of her 70mph fastball (probably) and can field too, I'd bet she'll be hanging tough with the boys for another three to five years at least. It will be very interesting to see where it takes her.

Kudos to her for enduring the obstacles, putting in the hard work, and most importantly for setting an excellent example for future generations.

I would like to see a shift in the general public's interest towards sports where finesse, coordination, and mental acuity can totally supersede brute strength and speed. Unfortunately, race car driving is the only competitive sport that immediately comes to mind, but surely there are others.

edit: Oh, and I apologize for using this as a soapbox, and I don't mean to detract in any way from her accomplishments or to imply this newscast or SI is evil, but as a counterpoint, I also always feel a little disgusted when the media (with their Nike, Reebok and Gatorade funding) draws a direct analogy to gender equality through athletics. It's a dangerous straw man... but meh, not everything on TV and magazines is responsible for solving serious social problems. It's just entertainment, so I'll shut up about it now.

British Soldier Butchered; Assailant Stays to Make a Speech

Why Norway is not a democracy, according to Fox News

chingalera says...

Please (insert ANY Nationally televised newscorp here), stop embarrassing America. Just stop.

And please YouTube and others, continue to dismantle the television and cable industry and destroy it completely.

The hope: That every corporately-paid newscaster will be out of work before the end of the decade.

I find these quite entertaining ... maybe I should be a casting agent?

"Europe is quietly rotting out"

ghark says...

Ahh interesting, I'll have to watch the rest. Definitely a good video, so thanks for sharing. It seems like something worthwhile to watch if you want to get some in-depth analysis without getting as much of the bias that's in the regular news channels because each speaker has their own perogative, rather than every newscaster conforming to what their channel wants.

The abundance of profits looking for a purpose was detailed by other panelists during the conference. in fact, either Yanis Varoufakis or Stuart Holland layed out their plan to use the EIB to tap into these unused mountains of cash and direct them towards a massive investment program.

That said, every single one of these 10-15 minute talks is focused on one specific part of the problem or a possible solution and I don't think I could get 10 votes for an entire panel, much less the entire conference. This video was my probe to see if anyone's interested at all. Which is also why it's rather general in nature and doesn't depend on a priori knowledge about the structure of the eurozone.

Louis CK on Daily Show. My Two Favorite Things.

bareboards2 says...

@rychan I have heard police psychologists (or whatever is the right term) say if you want to stop these horrendous mass killings, do NOT give publicity to the killers.

That is the single most important thing to do -- much more effective than gun control.

And yet we clambor to see their faces, know who they are. Newscasts capture eyes, newspapers and magazines sell. And we have free speech and a free media (except to the extent it is driven by the profit motive in small and also systematic ways.)

As for terrorists -- I think @Quboid is right on in general. Still, terrorists aren't ideological machines, they are human beings too. I suspect this kind of publicity is seductive to them, also. It is icing on the terror cake, though, not the cake itself I suspect.

Or something like that.

Asiana Flight 214 Pilot's Names Released FAIL

SDGundamX says...

Yeah, no doubt the joke is offensive, but it is also pretty hilarious--I laughed so hard I cried. I have no idea how that newscaster was able to read the teleprompter with a straight face.

Catching Criminals with Radio Commercials

bareboards2 says...

It's worse than that -- the show "Right This Minute" is an entire THIRTY MINUTES of talking heads watching popular videos and commenting on them.

It makes one video at the end of a newscast seem okay, in comparison.

But only in comparison.

artician said:

I was actually just going to post to recommend skipping just past the end to see the only newsworthy portion.

I hate this kind of format. No one cares what the talking heads think. Just give us the news and get your face off camera you narcissistic whores.

Yeah, I suspected it was just me being hypercritical.

I am deeply annoyed at how YouTube videos are showing up in newscasts as "news." And a full 30 minutes of grown people watching computer videos and reacting to them ON TV seems gross to me.

Evidence of the continuing demise of TV programming -- this is an extremely cheap program to produce...

No, not at all. To the uninitiated it seemed quite innocuous.

Unmanned Craft Flying Nightly Over Quincy Massachusetts

chingalera says...

Gee, is that the Mayor of Quincy? Look, both you tin-foil hat-slappers here, lemme break the programming down so you can understand how your brains function after a steady diet of bullshit fed you, your lives to date:

The bobblehead newscasters treat this little story like some tongue-in-cheek kicker(kickers the last news story of a newscast), complete with placating tones and smug expressions, feeding the sense of the absurd or impossible. Having been programmed to regard information according to such cues, your opinion is molded not based upon the information presented but the manner in which it's presented, in this case a formulaic and predictable response (as evidenced in the comments above) considering the implications of the event.

Sorry kids, you can't help it, it's part of the programming.
