New Rule: I Feel Petty

ChaosEngine says...

Oh FFS, here we go again with Maher deliberately missing the point.

Honestly, I used to think there were a few topics he should steer clear of (his anti-vax conspiracy nonsense to start with), but now I'm starting to think there are only a few topics he should comment on.

Even his schtick on religion is pretty fucking tired compared to much better commentators.

So fine, let's address the elephant in the room. The problem with this movie is that it holds up AMY FUCKING SCHUMER and goes "hah! look at her... the pig thinks she's good looking... how hilarious", when Amy Schumer is gorgeous.

So yeah, I'll go full SJW (never go full SJW!!) and say that this just reinforces the impossible beauty standard foisted on women that says if you're not Scarlett Johansson, you're not good looking.

If you want to hear a grown up who actually knows about film talk about the movie, watch Mark Kermode.

Bill Maher - Jon Meacham: Our Better Angels

I really enjoyed hearing this guy speak, but every time Maher piped up I wanted to stick a fork in my eye. When Maher interviews someone who actually knows something, he ends up sounding like a buffoon. STFU and learn something you unfunny douche bag.

Bill Maher - Ronan Farrow: War on Peace

ChaosEngine says...

I like this guy too. Didn't realise he was Woody Allen's kid and I thought it was pretty crass of Maher to bring it up (though totally unsurprising).

He was articulate and thoughtful and didn't fall for any of Maher's "Awww, poor Ansari and Franken" bullshit.

I've never liked what this douche has as opinions, but his stance regarding moral-posturing over facts is spot on. Social media is just mob rule writ large.

...oh, and I was speaking about the guest, not Maher. That douche is okay.

New Rule: The 'What Were You Thinking' Generation

MilkmanDan says...

I'm completely with Maher on this one.

...But, perhaps to his dismay, this kinda also explains (notice the use of "explains" as opposed to "justifies") unacceptable further-back behavior, like having some degree of appreciation for Confederate soldiers and officers in the Civil War, slave ownership by founding fathers like Thomas Jefferson, etc. It is possible to respect positive contributions of people in the past without being required to turn a blind eye to their faults, even if those faults would be utterly disqualifying today.

New Rule: Distinction Deniers

ChaosEngine says...

"It's exactly what he said, they're both unacceptable, and he's trying to define the spectrum. "
But the spectrum already exists. It's already enshrined in law for a start. I don't need Maher to lecture me about it.

"Yes, if some dude broke my leg, yes I would appreciate that they didn't murder me. "
Of course. You'd probably still report them to the police for assault though?

"Please admit, it's at least imprecise to have a one-size-fits-all justice system. "
I have. Several times.

"If and when people are being sentenced to death and/or extreme prison terms, yeah, let's talk about proportionate response."

"The sentence for these crimes is different and that's correct."

"If Aziz Ansari ends up sharing a cell with Harvey Weinstein, I will 100% stand up and say "hang the fuck on, those two are NOT equivalent". "

"Believe it or not, I've been in a sexual encounter where I've been forced to ..."
What happened to you wasn't rape, agreed, but it wasn't far off. If the roles were reversed and you had sneakily taken off a condom, in some jurisdictions that WOULD be rape.

"I don't think it's crazy to not want her to lose her job, and not want to file criminal charges against her, --- and this is key --- because even though something happened that was non consensual, I don't consider what happened rape, and I would NEVER equate what happened to me to what happened to all of Weinstein's victims because they fall on opposite ends of the spectrum.

Neither one was okay, and one is worse than the other."

Why does it matter that it wasn't rape? It was still a violation of trust and one that could have had lifelong consequences for you.

If she did that to you, who's to say she won't do it again to someone else?

Again, I go back to the assault metaphor. Even if an assailant doesn't murder you, they're still a violent aggressor and a potential danger to others.

Or even at a lower degree still, if someone treats you badly or swindles you, are you not entitled to warn others?

If what happened to you happened to me, I would warn anyone I knew about that kind of behaviour.
