luxintenebris jokingly says...

sure...

...or...

...necessity is the mother of invention.

just the plethora of inventions the Nazis came up with to appease their desire for war, serves as examples [i.e. SERIOUS Government edict].

bad examples - but still.

also, why is the average soccer mom driving vans that outmuscle classic muscle cars? mandating higher MPG made for lighter cars. the drive for better fuel efficiency led to more power. more power in lighter vehicles.

almost like the popular conservative belief: things will work themselves out - if they have to - is halfway true.

so...

...the idea is if the U.S. taxes carbon emissions, companies will find a way to reduce them. the oil industry agreed it would work.

so there's that...if you like to be more knowledgeable after you leave the room than when you came in.

Idiots -- all who believe this shit. Oil is the life blood of any economy.

Change to Green is coming. But it has to come when market forces make it mainstream. Not by Government edict.

The Ford Bronco - 10 Key Features (off road)

newtboy jokingly says...

At 15 mpg, you won’t get anywhere near the middle of nowhere.
Pretty sad that my 51 year old V8 Bronco gets the same mileage.

Great, now I need to move to the top of the mountain in the middle of nowhere just to take full use of this very cool car.

Shockwave from huge explosion hits marine in Hummer turret

Not sure about the military but we don't use km in normal life in the UK. In theory we're decimalised, and we use decimal currency and weights and volumes, for the most part. We do still measure our body weight in lbs, our height in feet and inches and the speed of our cars in mph. Distance on the road is in miles too, and gas mileage is mpg. Milk is sold in pints, as is beer. Timber is in inch dimensions (2x4 and so on) and usually in 8ft lengths. If it's sold in decimal measures it's a decimalised imperial measure, so instead of buying an 4 board you'll get a 2440mm x 1220mm.

We do use centigrade rather than fahrenheit. And fizzy drinks are sold by the litre. Come to think about it I really don't know why people think we're decimalised!

How to Unlock your Car in 10 Seconds

skinnydaddy1 says...

It does not matter. I stopped locking the doors on the car a few years back and they still break in. I keep nothing in it and have even stopped bolting the stock radios in it. Break ins - 23, Keyed - 4, egged - 5, radios stolen - 9. Wheels stolen - 6, Hit by others 7, Hit by thrown objects - 9, Tail lights broken 3.
Police could not figure out why the car kept being targeted and it was not until a few people had been caught that we found out why.

reasons
1. Make and model of car - 98 Honda Civic hx
It seems a large number of people have a massive hatred of Japanese cars or ricers as they like to call them.
Car is not modified in anyway other than after market tail lights. They were 30 bucks and far far cheaper than stock after someone broke the others. Bought the car after a soccer mom parked her SUV on my mustang and I wanted a car with much better MPG and the HX got 39 hwy.

2. Street I live on.
It is the only strait cut through from one road to another so people cutting through see the car all the time. "Oh look we can do something and be miles away before the owners get outside"

Its gone from being a nice little car. To a something being held together with duct tape and with my current job situation means I'm stuck with it for awhile to come.

so what this and other videos have taught me.

1. don't bother locking your car doors.
2. don't leave anything you like inside your car.
3. pray that no one uses your car as a restroom.

Giant "cloaked" object spotted near Mercury in solar storm

The very first thing i thought of was some mechanism similar to our northern lights, but i have no grasp of the distances, axes (unless the weird artifact line is one) or sizes or anything from the video to argue for it.
I guess we're seeing in IR, so all we know for sure is that something is hot around that region, bearing in mind that it's at least the diameter of mercury itself, so it's a fucking big whatever it is. A ship that big? Well, i guess if you say it's a ship you can say it's any size you like, we're in the realm of imagination.
Edit:
Also, culd be a fault in the equipment.

Happens several places on that video, it looks like some artifact of the video that comes from the planet when the CME hits.

You nailed it with that Edit2 video. It's just an artifact of failing to mask the enormous brightness of the planets out.

Reflecting on Growing Older Says Guy With '70 Dodge Charger

My 58 year old bro just bought a 2012 yellow mustang. He said all the young guys come and admire it in the parking lot. He also says it is rated to get 25 mpg -- although it only gets that when his wife drives it.

New Air Traffic Control System at Crossroads

westy says...

I'm not so sure using satalites for this is the best idea , given that a solar storm can take them all out in one go and if you have thousands of planes dependent on them with no other system things could get sticky.

( maby gps are within the van allen belt or u can protect them , I always thought gps had to be very high so they can be geo stationary)

At least with current air traffic if ground radar went down its not that huge a issue to just direct through communication , and I think its unlikely that a whole ground radar system would go down in one go.

also the air polotion from planes is pretty bad unless we can make planes that are far more fuel efficient (although planes are better than cars MPG Per Person )then I don't really want to see 3x more planes in the air , I think we should be using hybrid blimp planes that fly at around 150-200mph I think that's probably the future of air transport.

other than that having really tight defined flight paths that are maybe computer controlled and reconfigure to avoid things and reduce holding time would be really cool.
