Happy 154th birthday, Nikola Tesla!

Shepppard says...

now.. to be SLIGHTLY fair to Edison:

"On one of the more notable occasions, in 1903, Edison's workers electrocuted Topsy the elephant at Luna Park, near Coney Island, after she had killed several men and her owners wanted her put to death"

so, at the very least he didn't walk into a circus and think "Alright, what can I zap today?"

Lindsay Lohan Sent to Jail for 90 days

JiggaJonson says...

And the bitch thinks she's being tortured. Quick, someone bring me a a water board and some water.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/07/08/lindsay-lohan-defends-her_n_638913.html
From the article:
Later Lindsay vented about "cruel" and "inhuman" punishment. Over several rambling tweets she quoted from the UN Declaration of Human Rights:

It is clearly stated in Article 5 of the U.N. Universal Declaration of Human Rights that...., "No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment." this was taken from an article by Erik Luna.. "November 1 marked the 15th anniversary of the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines. But there were no celebrations, parades, or other festivities in honor of this punishment scheme created by Congress and the U.S. Sentencing Commission... Instead, the day passed like most others during the last 15 years: Scores of federal defendants sentenced under a constitutionally perverted system that saps moral judgment through its mechanical rules."

In a surprising twist, Lindsay linked to a Newsweek story about Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, the Iranian mother of two who may be stoned to death for adultery, and asked her followers to retweet. It's unclear whether she meant to lump her 90-day jail sentence with the inhuman punishment Ashtiani faces.

Baby Orca Plays with a Dog

Baby Orca Plays with a Dog

14327 says...

Actually this story has a tragic ending.
Luna was a young orca who got separated from his pod up here around Vancouver Island, Canada.
He took up residence in a bay outside a resource community where he became a celebrity with locals and tourists for activities like this. He would often play with boats or pop up near the piers to watch people.
Because orcas are social animals, he adopted humans as his family when his own family was unavailable.
Some thought it was cute, some thought it was annoying -- when killer whales play with boats they can do a lot of damage, however unintentionally.
Eventually, our Department of Fisheries came up with a plan to capture him and return him to his pod further south.
Regrettably, the stupid local native band decided that Luna was the re-incarnation of a recently deceased chief and they sabotaged the reunion efforts several times.
Luna was killed shortly after after he was torn up by boat props. Marine biologists figure he was probably playing with the boat in his usual manner and miscalculated the pull of the props.

Mars Science Laboratory - Insane Descent Sequence

12028 says...

It is quite a bit bigger. It can run over spirit. And yes, you guessed it, MSL is too heavy for the airbag deployment method. The viking lander which was heavy too used retro rockets. MSL is avoiding retro rocket use because they do not want to contaminate the landing site with organics from the fuel.

Here is a hypothetical picture of MSL next to Spirit:

Domenico Modugno - "Volare"

kronosposeidon says...

Soltanto per me.

Volare, Oh!, Oh!,
Cantare, Oh!, Oh!, Oh!, Oh!

Volare, Oh!, Oh!,
Cantare, Oh!, Oh!, Oh!, Oh!
Nel blu degli occhi tuoi blu,
Felice de stare quaggiù.

E continuo a volare, felice
Più in alto del sole ed ancora più in su.
Mentre il mondo pian’ piano
Scompare negli occhi tuoi blu,
La tua voce e una musica dolce
Che suona per me.

Volare, Oh!, Oh!,
Cantare, Oh!, Oh!, Oh!, Oh!
Nel blu degli occhi tuoi blu,
Felice de stare quaggiù.

Hmm.. is there one with the correct lyrics?

O fortuna
Velut luna
Statu variabilis,
Semper crescis
Aut decrescis;
Vita detestabilis
Nunc obdurat
Et tunc curat
Ludo mentis aciem,
Egestatem,
Potestatem
Dissolvit ut glaciem.

Sors immanis
Et inanis,
Rota tu volubilis,
Status malus,
Vana salus
Semper dissolubilis,
Obumbrata
Et velata
Michi quoque niteris;
Nunc per ludum
Dorsum nudum
Fero tui sceleris.

Sors salutis
Et virtutis
Michi nunc contraria,
Est affectus
Et defectus
Semper in angaria.
Hac in hora
Sine mora
Corde pulsum tangite;
Quod per sortem
Sternit fortem,
Mecum omnes plangite!

Fortune plango vulnera
Stillantibus ocellis
Quod sua michi munera
Subtrahit rebellis.
Verum est, quod legitur,
Fronte capillata,
Sed plerumque sequitur
Occasio calvata.

In fortune solio
Sederam elatus,
Prosperitatis vario
Flore coronatus;
Quicquid enim florui
Felix et beatus,
Nunc a summo corrui
Gloria privatus.

Fortune rota volvitur:
Descendo minoratus;
Alter in altum tollitur;
Nimis exaltatus
Rex sedet in vertice
Caveat ruinam!
Nam sub axe legimus
Hecubam reginam.

Learn latin, bitches!

Kermit the Frog - Hurt

pho3n1x says...

I was gonna jump all over the comment that Cash wrote this song, but apparently it's already been done, and is an old comment. but just for clarification:

Nine Inch Nails (Trent Reznor) written in 1994. Released on Downward Spiral.
Johnny Cash covered in 2002. Released on American IV: The Man Comes Around.

Reznor is most definitely the author of this song, and Cash is not the first to cover it either.

Tori Amos frequently sang three or four lines of the song as an introduction to other songs during her Dew Drop Inn tour in 1996, most frequently "Caught a Lite Sneeze", and then again in 1998, as an improvisational bridge.
Breaking Benjamin
Sheryl Crow covered the Cash version on the television special Tribute to Johnny Cash.
Fightstar
Matthew Good, acoustic tour 2006.
Gregorian arranged the lyrics into a medieval Gregorian chant.
Kermit the Frog is featured in an unauthorized parody called "Sad Kermit".
Aaron Lewis of Staind covered the song during his 2007 Have Guitar, Will Travel solo acoustic tour.
Luna Amara
Jeff Martin
Montezuma's Revenge
Placebo, at the House of Blues in California in 2003.
Damien Rice, by inserting lyrics from the song into his live performances.
Underoath played it acoustic live
Sevendust did a cover as a tribute to Johnny Cash.
Howard Stern had his own version for his show, called "Private Hurt". He played the song while mixing in sound clips from his film Private Parts.
Westside Connection sampled the main riff for their song "The Gangsta The Killa and The Dope Dealer".

What are you reading? (Books Talk Post)

Farhad2000 says...

I believe thats a misconception, reading his other books he also comes on the side of right wing almost fascist pro-Military structure in something like Starship Troopers. Even in the end of the Moon is a Harsh Mistress, you see the narrator of the story look back on how the great revolution had fallen into disarray with over regulation and control. I don't think there is much of his personal political views in it, but rather an exploration of various stances.

With regards to marriage and incest it's interesting and totally relevant to the book contextually, we learn Luna is colony where criminals and others were simply forced to occupy much like Australia was by England, the ratio of males to females was astronomical, leading to different structures in terms of marriage, but giving more power to the female over the male due to their prized status. Its all very interesting.
