Overpopulation: The Making of a Myth

Gabe_b says...

In terms of the peak population issue this : Your text to link... is pretty interesting. If you look at the change in birthrates in the just 8 years since the turn of the century, it's pretty astounding. An overwhelming majority of countries have had a reduction in fertility rates of a statistically significant percent. World fertility rates dropped 7.8%. In just 8 years! The wealthy developed Asian nations dropped drastically. Japan, already well below the rate of replacement in 200 dropped a further 15%. South Korea dropped 40%, while Taiwan's fertility rate almost halved. China is below the rate of replacement and dropping, while Indonesia is getting awfully close to 2.0 as well. The areas still showing significant growth are south Asia and Africa. Once these areas begin to develop to a greater degree, I'd assume there'd be a drop off in fertility rates there. So maybe 2040 peak population could come about without some horrible Madmax-ish battle for the last husk of corn.

enoch says...

oh there are jobs,if you want to make 6.50 an hr.
in 1971 america's largest employer paid an avg of 14.50 an hr,plus bennies and retirement.the american dollar was worth .78 on the dollar.

america's largest employer pays 8.50 and hr,no bennies,no retirement.the dollar is now worth .04-.07 on the dollar.
so not only did our parents make more, their money went many times further than it does today.
our forefathers had it right, labor is the strength of this country and its ability to manufacture goods.
by definition,America is a third world country.a total reversal of 50 years ago.
where once this country imported more raw materials than any other country, manufactured and exported more goods than anybody and lent money more than any other country.
it been a total 180 in the past 35 years.
take away our cell phones and cable tv and we are indonesia.
out of the top 100 richest nations,50 are corporations.think about that and weep.
this country does not need a bailout, nor another war..it needs a fucking enema.
power wishes only to concentrate itself with MORE power,be that a government or a corporation.
welcome to the united states of corporate america, can i take your bags?
those who hold the keys to OZ care not if you are a worker,a small business owner,a single mother or a student.they wish only to perpetuate a system where THEY benefit...we can go fuck ourselves.
call me when the revolution begins(which will only be when americans lose their cable TV)..ill be the guy selling black market cigs.ill bring the weed and the matches...
let the death be swift so we can clean up the garbage and start something good.
interesting how our forefathers had a pretty fantastic understanding about human nature and warned against such events:

When You Tried To Tell The World... Song for Schapelle Corby

Zeus says...

She has spent 5 years out of TWENTY is a hell hole, is suffering beyond ANYTHING you can imagine, endured one of the most blatant show trials of modern times in which her human rights were systematically trashed... and you "think it's pretty likely that she did it.".

What sort of person says that? What sort of person is that callous?

How about looking here:
www.schapelle.net/propositions/hiddentruth.pdf

Or at the proven human rights abuses:
www.schapelle.net/trial.html

Or head over to JournOz.Com and see how public opinion was subdued to allow her government to maintain its political stability with Indonesia.

This is barbaric cruelty almost beyond belief: yet some people post as though it was a game of football.

It is an innocent young woman struggling to survive on a daily basis. A REAL person, being crucified for politics (for and mega War on Drugs funding) over a few pounds of dope.

This beautiful song is a cry of despair. Some people though will never care about others, however desperately they need help.

Incredible mimic octopus

grinter says...

It looks like a lot of it motions are trying to find a cavity to crawl into. Actually, it looks like it's foraging, many of the movements in the first half of the video are it turning over a small piece of coral rubble, but it's hard to imagine it's thinking about food when surrounded by 3 divers.

^and notarobot, funny that you see a scorpion. I was just thinking that the "stingray" looks more like the flying gunard, which is common to some of the areas in Indonesia where the mimic is found. It's in the order Scorpaeniformes, as are lionfish which mimics supposedly mimic. I'm guessing the order was so named because of the poisonous spines of the fish rather than any general resemblance.

Freedom Go To Hell

Farhad2000 says...

The debate of freedom of speech and censorship is on going, am not parroting one line or the other. I believe in freedom of speech myself and have disagreed with the inane protests that occurred during the publishing cartoons, but the question has to be raised when you have a film that is negative of an entire religion while any similar criticism is labeled as anti-semetic when applied to the Jewish community. The hypocrisy is there.

Furthermore society censors ideas because it finds them offensive and detrimental to social cohesion, I don't think you would find many defending the freedom of speech of people burning crosses, wearing KKKs masks and calling black people the n word, using Nazi symbols in German or denying the holocaust.

I mean look at what happened when one Catholic priest said that he denies the existence of the holocaust. He was made to 'reform', this also falls under the freedom of speech argument. The debate is thorny as it is. Ultimately you realize that the creation of censorship occurs to maintain social cohesion or relations between nations. I might not necessarily agree with it but I understand its existence, likewise here in this case as well, I understand its screening online and in Netherlands but I draw a line when he tries to use it as a political vehicle.

Jwray, of course he doesn't Pat Condell is at the end against all religion and is against the seeming loss of Liberty in this case, but he takes one side of the religion and it becomes a cohesive attack on all aspects of it. Have you seen his other videos?

People wouldn't differentiate between that, and would simply use this as another tool to further their own ideas, most of all what I have seen the idea of the clash of civilizations. I have seen this debate reach fever peak after 9/11 with the emergence of Little Green Footballs, Jihad Watch and Fjordsmann. I think that is a destructive and nonconstructive path to take. I refuse to simple stand by and not present counter arguments.

The claim that making such statements doesn't result in problems down the line look no further then the US military cultural training of 2003, where troops were essentially told that all Arabs are deceitful jihadists that would like nothing other then to kill themselves to reach heaven. Where a entire political power claimed that Islamic fascism reaches from Morocco to Indonesia. It seems that in the Western world declarations like these have a finite life time this is not the case in the Eastern world.

Given the last 8 years, I believe the Western world needs to engage the Arab world in dialog but it must respect the cultural background of the region and not just think that it can westernize ideas through brute force and seemingly endless criticism of it's religion.

Tara Hack: Saya Tidak Bersalah - For Schapelle Corby

Zeus says...

This video is new. Tara recorded the song for it at the end of October, and a window for people to submit their protest was open for a week or two. The response was overwhelming: a lot of the world does have a heart after all - and will stand up to be counted for justice.

Even though she is so desperate, she is dispensable. Australia's strategic relationship with Indonesia trumps Schapelle Corby's human rights.

YOU can help us change that equation. She needs REAL people in REAL places to stand by here: like those in the vid.

Please visit the website (schapelle.NET) and view the short video on her.

Thank you.

indonesian mimic octopus immitates banded sea snake

BicycleRepairMan says...

Found this more detailed description on Youtube:

Thaumoctopus mimicus. This fascinating creature was discovered in 1998 off the coast of Sulawesi in Indonesia, the mimic octopus is the first known species to take on the characteristics of multiple species. This octopus is able to copy the physical likeness and movement of more than fifteen different species, including sea snakes, lionfish, flatfish, brittle stars, giant crabs, sea shells, stingrays, jellyfish, sea anemones, and mantis shrimp. This animal is so intelligent that it is able to discern which dangerous sea creature to impersonate that will present the greatest threat to its current possible predator. For example, scientists observed that when the octopus was attacked by territorial damselfishes, it mimicked the banded sea snake, a known predator of damselfishes.

McCain: Palin Is Top Energy Expert In US, Understands Russia

kronosposeidon says...

I live in Wyoming. Now Wyoming doesn't border on another nation, but Montana does, and Wyoming borders on Montana. Therefore I have some expertise in international relations, but admittedly not as much as Montana residents.

You know, the ocean separates Alaska and Russia, and the ocean also separates California, Oregon, and Washington from Russia, China, Japan, Philippines, North Korea, South Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Tonga, Palau, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Kiribati, the Federated States of Micronesia, and Antarctica. Therefore the 47 million residents of those three sates have TONS of experience in international relations and foreign policy.

And think about all the countries that lie across the Atlantic from the East Coast and Gulf Coast residents. Foreign policy experience up the ying yang! Jesus, no wonder America is so well respected in international relations!

Now where is Pakistan?

Islam conquering England

Farhad2000 says...

Oh really Evangelicals didn't support a current war against the Axis Of Evil? You never heard Jerry Fallow or Pat Robertson speaking out against striking against the Ayerabs? George Bush had God tell him to go to war, he was on a mission from Gawwwd.

Religious involvement in geopolitical events is all a matter of perspective.

With regards to religious extremism in Europe ha! That's less to do with religion then with anti-reactionary attitude against immigrants who are coming into the nation. Every anti western cleric has been deported from the UK. You know what else you got after 7/11 British Government encroachments on personal freedoms, go near any US airfield, you will be arrested, protest near parliament, you will be arrested. Don't worry about them they got a police state there, CCTV all over the cities that magically took only 3 photos of the 7/11 bombers. Muslims actually have cloaking technology.

You don't see the governments complaining, I wonder why it is? Oh surely they have been brainwashed by Wizards of Islam. The reason they don't interfere is because Europe is a declining population growth, they need labor to do the jobs Europeans don't want to do, just like in the States. Welcome to capitalism and labor mobility.

I love how you want to say that world events are somehow driven by people's wishes, beliefs and feelings. No, its all about money. Labor mobility is a big plus for old Europe. That's why you don't see these states implement massive immigration restrictions, which they would do overnight. Instead we are seeing the implementation of the European Blue Card.

You fail to see the complexity of world events and choose just a narrow view of clearly these people are out to kill everyone. Also don't you happen people are pissed? Western world has invaded Iraq and Afghanistan, both nations are still worse off. Both invasions has pushed massive refugees into other states. Palestinians are still getting killed as are civilians in both conflict zones. You know that US Forces up until the Battle of Haditha looked at civilian casualties as normal events in a time of war?

ElJardinero, wow, really Islams chop people hands off in all Islamic states? I should really tell people in Turkey, Indonesia, Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain, Yemen, Egypt. That's Saudi Arabia my friend, you know the nation that is supported by the Democratic states of UK and USA, the bestests of friends of the Western Worldz! You know they wanted to lash a woman for getting raped? Who kept mum on that? The US government whose own human rights charter KSA has been breaking year on year.

Religion as I say again is a apparatus of control in both Iran and Saudi Arabia, designed to keep an elite in power through religious terrorism. Islam has nothing to do with it, its simply a tool of power in the same way Catholicism, Protestant and many other faiths are used to justify killing human beings. The Ireland conflict and the war in Bosnia was based around religion, you people seem to forget that. Its just history repeating.

But go ahead. I live in Kuwait and we make alot of money feeding and supplying the US armed forces. I feel fucking sorry for the young men getting killed there fighting a war that has no aim.
