Greenpeace Re-Igniting the Nuclear Power Debate
if that's the best greenpeace can do then...
Greenpeace Re-Igniting the Nuclear Power Debate
Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)
Upvote for the melt-down of a discussion this will spark, but yeah pretty cheap pandering by Greenpeace.
I shall now scowl at them, when they come up to me with their clipboards on the street.
Greenpeace Re-Igniting the Nuclear Power Debate
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.
Greenpeace have totally lost their minds.
Why is it so hard to understand that the entire populace won't suddenly change their energy consumption habits overnight and that nuclear power is a good buffer between that time.

Here is the wikipedia article on it, don't forget to check the Talk section cause there is some controversy.
In this case it isn't small NGO's, it's Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth etc. These are big propaganda machines that do a lot of lobbying and against these projects. It's their spokespeople who you see character assassinate themselves in this documentary. You can find the documentary in the torrent scene.
It's really hard to judge who is right and wrong in this case, but my past research into Greenpeace and some environmental movements makes me weary.

Everything you use on a daily basis is made out of lots of materials. Where do you think most of them come from? Mining! Yes it leaves scars on the landscape but so do cities, airports, you name it. The mining plans conform to European standards and are much cleaner than the old cold war mine that's still there.
Greenpeace et al. claim they want to make a nice tourist place out if it. Not happening, there's not much to see there except for places ruined by old mining practices.
Of course the mining company is only serving it's own interests, but it does need miners and they happen to live there. They also pay a mine tax to the country in question which helps the economy of the country (if it's not a corrupt country).
Greenpeace Media-Jamming Kleenex
Greenpeace is a retarded naive and evil organization that wants to keep people poor.
They say they want a better environment and that we should pollute less. But they don't want nuclear power. They only want solar which is nowhere near being economically viable. But this is just naivety.
The absolute worst thing is their anti genetically modified food stance. You know they actually convinced Zambia to reject food aid because it was GM. They also oppose golden rice with extra vitamins that would reduce blindness and other diseases in Asia. They oppose the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. It is like they want the third world to starve. Which they probably do because it would help the rain forest.
They want everyone to do organic farming. This is ridiculous as it would require much more land to feed people which mean much more clearcutting of forests to support agriculture.
They oppose more development in developing countries like opposing mining and logging. These are the natural recourses of these countries and they have every right to use them. We got rich by exploiting our natural recourses so why shouldn't they?
Greenpeace can complain about their little things and be against poor people developing while most of them and their members are really rich and have comfortable lives..
Greenpeace Media-Jamming Kleenex
what kind of skeletons omni? I just joined greenpeace like, yesterday, so I'm interested to know what i've gotten myself into....
Greenpeace Media-Jamming Kleenex
Although this is interesting, it's not like Greenpeace doesn't have skeletons in its closet.
Greenpeace Media-Jamming Kleenex
Greenpeace = automatic downvote (if I could)
Mac PC Parody
I don't get what the environmental message is. that greenpeace doesn't understand even the most blatant unintentional irony?
Tour of the depths of the Chernobyl reactor and sarcophagus
Good post codenazi. I totally agree with the pro nuclear people here.
I'd like to dispel the anti-nuclear argument that there is not that much uranium in the earth to sustain nuclear power for a long time. This is bullcrap. The cost of electricity from a nuclear plant is almost completely unrelated to the price of uranium. That it, the process is much more expensive than the raw uranium. The uranium prices can increase 10 fold and we would barely notice it in the energy price. When the price of uranium increases new reserves can be tapped. Also there hasn't been nearly as much uranium exploration as oil exploration so there's tons of the stuff still to be found. Also there are scientist working on extracting uranium from the ocean which would give us all the uranium we could ever need in the foreseeable future.
Then there's Chernobyl which as been stated was just a complete cock-up and bad design. However the effects of the event were nowhere near the magnitude reported by scaremongers like greenpeace.
http://www.physics.ox.ac.uk/nuclearsafety/colloquiumNovember2006website.pdf
"Professor Wade Allison of Oxford University (a lecturer in medical physics and particle physics) gave a talk on ionising radiation 24 Nov 2006 in which he gave an approximate figure of 81 cancer deaths from Chernobyl (excluding 28 cases from acute radiation exposure and the thyroid cancer deaths which he regards as "avoidable"). In a closely reasoned argument using statistics from therapeutic radiation, exposure to elevated natural radiation (the presence of radon gas in homes) and the diseases of Hiroshima and Nagasaki survivors he demonstrated that the linear no-threshold model should not be applied to low-level exposure in humans, as it ignores the well-known natural repair mechanisms of the body."

Yes QM, Greenpeace is just waiting to take over your life. We are stockpiling trees to whip you with.

Helicopter Madness - A Close Call
More info from YouTube:
This is a Turbine Enstrom Helicopter on the Heli Pad of a Greenpeace ship some where off the coast of Ireland. One of the deck straps has not been released correctly, with what was very nearly disastrous consequence. Pilot skill and quick thinking saved the day.
This take-off phenomenon is called parametric diving. It happens when the deck is descending and angulating. The wind doesn't much help either. The best defense is full throttle straight vertical.
Movie Trailer -- Mine Your Own Business
I currently live in Indiana, but I lived in Kentucky back in the day. Kentucky is home to many poor Americans who stood to benefit from activities like mountaintop mining, and aren't too hard to convince with promises of money and reclamation efforts after each site is mined, and promises of continued employment beyond the next couple years.
After a few years of coal sludge leaks into the streams that supply your communities water it sets in that the mining companies don't give two shits about poor people, but by then the laws are in place, the land is sold, the company has invested and the poor are trapped.
Greenpeace is an easy target, by the way, and always has been. They drive boats between whales and whaling ships for craps-sake! Thats a pretty easy taget! Saying environmentalism is best represented by Greenpeace is like saying only vegans care about animals.
'The Creation' by E.O.Wilson is a great book, by the way. He is basicly my only hero in science right now. I love leaving long comments late at night.
